Topic: RIP Leonard Skinner

The man who was the inspiration for Lynyrd Skynyrd's name, although a smart aleck gesture at first, has passed away at the age of 77. Coach Skinner, as he was known, had been in a nursing home suffering from Alzheimer's Disease. Coach Skinner was a gym teacher @ Robt. E. Lee High School in Jacksonville, Fla. and became infamous for sending Ronnie Van Zant to the principal's office for wearing his hair too long and the rest is Southern Rock history. Who knows what Skynyrd may have named themselves if Coach Skinner had gone by his true first name Forby instead of his middle name Leonard.

Re: RIP Leonard Skinner

Marshall Tucker & Jethro Tull are just band names, but Leonard(Lynyrd) Skinner(Skynyrd) truly existed. Sorry Kyddo.

You are having a laugh right JDawg, because Jethro Tull is a real persons name ie;

Jethro Tull (agriculturist) (1674–1741), English agriculturist, often credited with inventing the seed drill.

also

The "Marshall Tucker" in the band's name does not refer to a band member, but rather a Spartanburg-area piano tuner. While the band was discussing possible band names one evening in an old warehouse they had rented for rehearsal space, someone noticed that the warehouse's doorkey had the name "Marshall Tucker" inscribed on it, and suggested they called themselves the "Marshall Tucker Band," not realizing it referred to an actual person. It later came to light that Marshall Tucker, the piano tuner, had rented the space before the band, and the landlord had yet to change the inscription on the key.

Re: RIP Leonard Skinner

I stand corrected, my English history needs boning up and that story about Marshall Tucker vaguely rings a bell now that you've mentioned it. For the sake of argument though there are bands with fictitious names that keep people wondering.....aren't there?

Saw a recent Bio on them and they mentioned how tired they got of the media asking, which ones Pink? In fact I believe that was the name of the show.

A favorite band of mine outta Chicago.....The Freddy Jones Band. No Freddy Jones in the band and they never have revealed the source of the name.
