The FUCHS Plush Drive is a great Dumble like tone machine.  I'll sell you mine.

I used it just for that thick kind of gain.  I just dont use it much anymore.

Yeah, i think i like the Dumkudo better.  The issue will be how my amp will react considering I play a tweed bassman/early marshall replica.  I am also beginning to think that I may be able to work something like this using my fulldrive and an EQ pedal...  I will have to hit the studio some time this week and do some experimentation.  Thanks for the reviews though, quite helpful.

There was one recently on ebay, used and the bidding is already at 390 bones with 4or 5 days left last i checked.  No pedal is worth that IMHO.  Just wait until one of our geeky friends on TGP gets a hold of it and the inclination to clone it.  You will likely be able to build one for 50 bucks in parts, and that is only because of the 30 knobs the Ethos has.

Re: Best Pedal for Very Overdriven Dumble Tone?

Ok, I have done a bit more reading and apparently the Mosferatu by Hermida is the Zendrive with more gain which may be exactly what i ma looking for.  I am still quite impressed with the Small Fry as well.  Wondering if anyone can who owned both can chime in.

They are selling these days in upwards of $500, mostly due to the fact that people don't want to wait.  I somewhat agree with your statement about no pedal being worth that price but I feel a little different about the Ethos.  It reminds me more of a preamp than a pedal.  The fact that this can go direct to a PA and still sound this good has kept me from buying multiple amps for different situations.  From that perspective, the opportunity cost (for me) justifies the Ethos' price - I actually saved myself at least $500 not looking for a small combo (12-18w) that can do little venues.  I just plug this thing direct and I'm set.  Not sure about the cloning comment either (although I'd welcome it if someone could do it).  The Ethos has been around for a while (and all over TGP) and I haven't even seen a close impostor much less a clone.  Tons of Dumble overdrive clones but that is only a small percent of Ethos's capabilities.  I rationalized it like this - I traded my PaulC TIM and Jetter Jetdrive straight up for an Ethos.  Now, I love the TIM and Jetdrive A LOT.  I think the quality of those two pedals easily rivals the Ethos dirt tones (although I wouldn't classify the TIM or Jetdrive as a Dumble-style pedal).  The tipping point (IMHO) for the Ethos is....the clean channel.  TIM or the Jetdrive can compete on the quality of the dirt tones but they can't do pure cleans like the Ethos.

Sorry for the rant, but I think it is much easier to validate the high price point when one considers the entire context.

metz420, I do agree with you;  if you need it, can use it, and actually makes sense to spend that money, then so be it.  Tone/cost/need/versatility are easily justifiable and general selling points for a musician  It was just a personal opinion from my poor perspective.  If I could afford it, then I would likely pick one up without a second thought.  I am still secretly hoping one will fall on my lap through some miracle at a more affordable price!  big_smile

Happy Early Birthday!  Best of luck with your future acquisition.  You know, despite the wait and the premium the Ethos is able to fetch these days, I do see a lot of folks selling (and trading) their Ethos over at TGP.  It is worth looking in their emporium often for deals, especially if you have  some gear you can offer up.  If you are only interested in the gain capabilities of the Ethos, I would seriously consider the Jetter Red Shift.  Grossly underrated, much easier to acquire, cheaper and competes significantly (again, IMHO) with the Zendrive - another unit that is not so easy to get in my experience.

Opportunity costs vs. a new amp aside, the REAL test of the Ethos will be how long it can stave off my GAS.  So far, 1 month and counting and no desire to get something else. big_smile

Re: Best Pedal for Very Overdriven Dumble Tone?

Ok, so I think I got the pedal answer. Funny enough it is not advertised as a D-style pedal.  Got it from the TGP, and after watching several videos the saturation and and note clarity were there to my ears.  I guess it was not so much a quest for a Dumble  in a  pedal which is nearly impossible (ok maybe except for the Ethos), but some tonal traits about that Lance Keltner video and the David Lindley tones that I really liked.

Of course you are all wondering what this pedal is... I am thinking that I should wait to receive it, try it with my rig and report back at that time as not to influence ppl on a rush to ebay in order to get it.

Re: Best Pedal for Very Overdriven Dumble Tone?

Call up Alf, tell him you want a zendrive SE...it has a bit more gain than the regular zendrive, and it sounds fantastic.  Cuts through the mix with ease and gives you a good heavy dumble tone

Re: Best Pedal for Very Overdriven Dumble Tone?

I would say the "HAO Rumble Mod". Very good dumble tone I think. I don't know if that thing would really get nasty sounds but it sure has some good dumble sounds.

Re: Best Pedal for Very Overdriven Dumble Tone?

OK, like I promised, here I am to reveal the pedal that I found to satisfy my needs.  It is the EWS Brute Drive.  It is not marketed at all like a D-style pedal or any other style of pedal.  They supposedly took their Fuzzy Drive (like a OD fuzz hydrid) unit and souped it up to get more gain.  I finally had a chance to wire it in to my main rig. At first, playing at home through a 5 watt 1965 Gibson Skylark I was a bit disappointed, but knew, or hoped, the story would be different through my 6L6 based bassman/plexi head.  I am really pleased.  To my ears, whenever I hear great smooth distortion, or high saturation overdrive from amps, I hear a fuzz-like quality.  The Brute drive really shined in achieving just that; pretty high gain yet with a  nice smooth and soothing fuzzy quality to it.  Chord clarity was great and really responded wel to touch sensitivity and the volume knob of the guitar.  It really got close to the original Bludotone sound that I posted originally.  It also paired up great going into my BB preamp for solo boosts.  All three knobs are very interactive and VERY functional.  When I looked at the TGP for pedals the guy actually said it nailed the Lindley D-tones, which was exactly what I was looking for.  I will be glad to answer any questions.
