Topic: New Overdrive Pedal

My birthday present was ordered today! I cracked after listening to some sound clips and reading reviews.  Rockbox Boiling Point.  I ordered it this afternoon from Guitar Emporium in Louisville.  I hope to have it by Saturday but it will probably be Monday.  I hope it will set my old Fender heads on fire.  Anyone on the forum tried one of these yet?  Let me know what you think if you have.  I will give a review as soon as I get it and give it a full workout.

Re: New Overdrive Pedal

First real test on this pedal tonight. I took it up to our practice room and was able to crank the old Bassman head some.  I began with my whole pedal board, but as I got into it I started taking pedals off.  I ended up with just the Boiling Point, Analog Man Chorus, and Boss DD-3.
Best plexi sound I have ever got out of a pedal.  Tight, thick mids with good articulation, with a bunch of sustain.  I usually stack overdrives for my lead tone but this pedal may not need it.  Verdict is not completely in yet as I was by myself, no other band members there.  The real test will come Thursday night at band practice (Five piece with keyboards)  I have struggled in the past to cut through with my band.  We will see what happens.  For the record, I was not overdriving the Bassman, I ran it fairly clean and got all of my drive tone out of this pedal.

Re: New Overdrive Pedal

Sounds cool HoosierRock, I just busted out my old Bassman today too.  No overdrive pedals were involved but man what a tone!  Just balls out Plexi like crunch with a little less mids and gain than my dad's Trainwreck build.  I spent less for my '65 Bassman than what most guys are buying boutique overdrives for these days.

'67 and '74 Fender Twin Reverbs, '74 Marshall 1987 lead mkII, Metro Superlead 100. Pedals from TC Electronic, Ibanez, Dunlop, BK Butler, Electro-Harmonix, Fulltone, Maestro/Gibson, Loopmaster switching, VoodooLab, Boss. Gibson and Fender guitars, Dimarzio pickups.

I am a big fan of overdrive pedals and my favorite is the Fulltone OCD. I just bought a beautiful addition to it to provide an alternative overdriven sound with great distrotion break up - a Providence Stampede OD. It is billed as a "Dumble in a box" and it's pretty much there. A STUNNING pedal well worth a look. See http://www.providence-effects.fr/crbst_18.html

Re: New Overdrive Pedal

Oh man that Providence sounds good - you've got me GASsing - thanks  wink. I think I'm the only guitar player in the world who has NOT tried the OCD....my favourite (non-tube OD) is the Fulldrive 2, hands down. Think TS-808 on one side - clean solo boost on the other...

Gits: '03 Gibson Historic R7 Goldtop, '06 Gibson R8 Plaintop, MIJ '62 RI Strat,  and others...
Amps: '99 Marshall 1987x Plexi RI, 1969 Fender Super Reverb

No...you are not the only one...I haven't tried one either...LOL

The thing is I was going to but this Providence is making rethink it....she does sound so sweet

Guys - I have had more distortion and overdrive pedals over the years (including an original TS-808 Tubescreamer) than you would believe and the combination of OCD and Providence is amazing. Gives me EVERYTHING I could ever need. Sell your house, granny and car to get a Providence. They are stunning. I suppose I was initially drawn in by the endorsement by Robben Ford (I am a big fan) and thought "yeah, whatever" but then I tried one. The credit card came straight out.

Re: New Overdrive Pedal

Used the Rockbox Boiling Point at practice last night.  This is a very good pedal.  Best Marshall voiced pedal I have used.  I have used an OCD for a couple years but this pedal will take its place.  To me, the Boiling Point does have better mids and clarity than the OCD, it seems to respond faster with better articulation.  It has more gain available than I will ever need and great sustain.  This is a great Marshall voiced pedal for an old Fender amp.  The only drawback is the price.  Luckily the music store I shop at gives good trade ins on quality pedals so I was able to trade off one that was collecting dust.  This may still be a bit of a honeymoon review so I will keep you posted as I keep working with this pedal.  Pro Guitar Shop has a great video demo of this pedal.  Joe has a comment on the Rockbox site where he really liked this pedal.
