Topic: Lynyrd Skynyrd Playlist

I've been delving into Skynyrd's music this past month along with modern southern rock bands and would welcome any comments or shouts related to the original band's songs and their influence.  What I've found is once you get away from the greatest hits stuff, which is....well great, you'll find some real gems that are absolutely timeless.
Forgot, here's some songs I didn't have until recently, but I always liked listening to albums versus greatest hit compilations.  The playlist so far:
Jacksonville Kid - Street Survivors
Ain't No Good Life - Street Survivors
I Never Dreamed - Street Survivors
You Got That Right - Street Survivors
Roll Gypsy Roll - Gimme Back My Bullets
All I Can Do Is Write About It - Gimme Back My Bullets
Every Mother's Son - Gimme Back My Bullets
Cry For the Bad Man - Gimme Back My Bullets
On the Hunt - Nuthin Fancy
Am I losin' - Nuthin' Fancy

Later I'll give the non Skynyrd groups added to my playlist...

Here's a little b&w of the original band.  Still pretty darn good imo.

Re: Lynyrd Skynyrd Playlist

you know I love me some Skynyrd. You Got That Right and All I Can Do... are definitely classic in the true sense. I only have pieces of some albums loaded on the PS3, thanks to son, but it doesn't give you song titles. will investigate the others ASAP. hell I just found out not too long ago that Ed King was a former member of Strawberry Alarm Clock, one of my 60s favs.

Re: Lynyrd Skynyrd Playlist

Curby, if you like the album cuts why not just own all the original discs and for a special treat get a copy of Endangered Species, their "unplugged album", not the original band, but nice acoustical versions. You might want to get your hands on a copy of First & Last, the stuff before Pronounced. Mississippi Kid is a good one which they usually breakout at live shows with Rickey Medlocke on mandolin. You gotta give Al Kooper credit for his production work that really got them headed in the right direction and MCA records for throwing them out on the road with The Who in '73 after they signed them.

Oops, almost forgot Down South Jukin'

J Dawg,

Actually I do have all the original stuff, only it's all on vinyl.  You're totally right about Al Kooper.  I didn't include Pronounced in my post cause that whole album's greatest hits worthy and one of two of their cds I own ( the other is the fantastic One More From the Road live album).

Re: Lynyrd Skynyrd Playlist

Workin' For MCA is by far my favorite song of theirs. Also, Was I Right or Wrong is another good one.

Re: Lynyrd Skynyrd Playlist

Probably my favorite tune after Sweet Home Alabama is on One More From The Road, T For Texas. If you have the vinyl double album it's on there, but it was left off the CD version for some unknown reason. Steve Gaines finest moment, or as Ronnie says in the intro, "Watch out I'm gonna sick an Okie on ya!". I got my hands on that one on a disc called The Best Of The Rest, bought it just for "T". Saw them in Sept. just before the crash. I was in Charlotte, NC on business watchin' the World Series when the news bulletin reported their plane went down. Saddest day in my musical life. Now if they would just release a tour date in NorCal this summer I can git me some.

                                                                            Gimme a "T" For Thelma
That Woman Made a Fool Outta Me,
                                                                            Yeah!,

"T For Texas" is on the deluxe edition of One More For the Road.  This second release came out (believe it or not) on September 11, 2001.  I started my job out of college on October 20, 1977 (the day of the plane crash) and Steve Gaines and the guy he replaced in Skynyrd, Ed King, were both born on the same day (Sept. 14, 1949).  It wasn't until years later that King, visiting Gaines' gravesite, learned this bit of trivia.  It freaked him out.

Deezer - You're right about "Workin' For MCA, great, great song.

Re: Lynyrd Skynyrd Playlist

"Play Me A Song Curtis Loew, Curtis Loew....Well I got your drinkin' money, tune up your dobro".

Not a hidden gem but I love  that song.

Not only did Skynyrd write some great music the lyrics from Ronnie were the best.

Right on Shreddy, all our Momma's told us. This is the one where they pay tribute to all their fellow bandmates they've lost @ live shows, it chokes me up every time.

Re: Lynyrd Skynyrd Playlist

They have put out a lot of good albums since reforming in 1987,yet these days all they seem to play is stuff from  the 70s.its only Gary rossington left from then, but they are stuck on the same predictable set list and a lot of great tracks never get an airing.its put me off going to see them a couple of times.
