Topic: Gibson ES-339 and the Joe Tone

This guitar is straight up MAGIC - maybe the best production guitar Gibson is making right now....firmly planted in the Les Paul camp it still gets all those killer (near) 335 tones with its laminate semi solid construction but flat out rocks when called upon.  This is far and away my favorite guitar I own and can pull off just about every tone needed.  This into my Carol Ann is eargasmic...

Curious if Joe has ever had the opportunity to monkey around with one of these???

Re: Gibson ES-339 and the Joe Tone

He has, if you check the Youtube vids of him in the Fuchs Namm booth he is playing a red ES339.  He still sounds like Joe (awesome).  I thought that the 339s were built in the Custom Shop?  Either way for under $2K they are a solid buy from Gibson especially if you are a Les Paul guy trying to add some ES335 flavor to your arsenal.

You know, I had forgotten about those clips...hmmm, yeah, still sounded like Joe  cool

They are allegedly a Custom Shop item, but they are built in the Memphis plant with the 335's.  It has a custom shop sticker and does come with a COA.  I got mine for under $1500 new right before a price increase.  Unrealguitar.  and thanks man - the guitars and amps are a blast.  I did sell the Mayes Bombshell Jr. but still have the R7 and the Vector.  The 339 is the perfect size for me as its right about a Les Paul size.  Here's a comparison shot of an LP / 339 / 335  (not my guitars)

Re: Gibson ES-339 and the Joe Tone

I like my ES-339 very much. Antique red with fat neck. Joe tried it when he signed it and told that 'it feels much better than the one they sent me'. It is pleasure to play it eaven without an amp.

Here is a clip of the 339 with my diy Dumble style amp: http://soundclick.com/share?songid=8895338

cool clip - there's that tone in spades, that semi hollow honk present with the guitar.  I like mine unplugged as well.  Nice tone you're getting there if that is in fact an EL84 based amp?

Thanks for sharing !

Yes that is a single ended EL84 power section that I combined with a Dumble HRM style preamp with a few tweaks. No gigging volumes there but a great home and recording amp. There is a Fender style tube spring reverb (that I built) on the passive effect loop that helps further to smoothen the sound.

Mat -

It was all good until you had to post up a Strat clip  roll   just kidding man, its all a positive contribution, I'm digging the tones on your amp and your playing too.  Funny thing is my R7 is getting a neck shave at the moment and I actually got out my Strat and Tele mutt for the first time in a long time and dare I say remembered why I love those guitars too...plugged the 339 back in and it was like an old pair of shoes - just warm and comfy.  I willl always have a Strat / Tele thing around the house but its pretty safe to say the conversion to shorter scale buckered guitars is complete.

Keep the comments and clips coming and heres a link to that Joe B. Fuchs pedal demo mentioned earlier:
