I think the reason for all the hubub is that it is some good song choices, Joe's playing really shines, and his voice has definitely sounded better than ever. It is a bit mellower than his previouis works, but I think this is because it's his bluesiest album. Moreso than Blues Deluxe. Even with it, it just seemed like he was rockin' out on some blues tunes. Here, it seems like he's trying to get more of a blues feel.
As far as over-produced, you could say that about some of Hendrix's work. But Jimi looked at live and in the studio as two completely different realms. I'm thinking Joe is starting to look at it that way too.
