Topic: Ross halfin plays JOE's new disc for Jimmy Page.. Mixed comments!

I played Jimmy page the Joe Bonamassa cd in my car. It's alright if you like people who play very technical guitar with no mistakes, if you drool over the Nam show (boring trade show for sad people who worship guitars and amps). I'm not a great fan of guitarists who have none of their own songs. The vocals on Tea For One are better than the original, and the guitar is very Robin Trower, but he does overplay. Jimmy liked it, but thought he was showing off in the middle of Tea For One. A great cd to drive to...

I know I should know who Ross Halfin is but splain it to me please. One of the reasons we like Joe is his ability to show off. If you can then just do it.

As I said after listening to the original I think Robert is singing at his best and Jimmy is sloppy to say the least.

It is funny how other musicians react to Joe. Some critisize. The ones that are most secure themselves in their ability appreciate his talent.

I always say if they could play like Joe they probably would. They can't so they find fault in his playing. Too techniqual, too many notes, showing off.

Bullshit.

Sounds more negative than positive. Sounds like he's trying to justify his own shortcomings. I guess that's a compliment in a way smile

i didn't really know exactly what to think..
But, good to know Jimmy page has listened to the disc.....

I agree wholeheartedly Jim.  Joe is not too technical but just one of the best quitarist around these days.

Music is good for the Soul...

I don't think I get it...?

"Jimmy Page in your car - played Joe's CD - It's alright if you like- the Namm show is for sad people who drool - not a great fan of guitarists who play only covers - Doug Henthorn better than Robert Plant - guitar very Robin Trower but overplayed - Jimmy liked it but thought Joe was overplaying - a great CD to drive to..."

I've got to admit, I'm not real clear what you're saying about the CD...or what you think of what Jimmy thought...? Is it "Alright" or "Great" ?? Joe has plenty of original material along with some covers on his records - as did Zep - what's that about?

Can you clarify?
Thanks, Stu

Geez, I could possibly be the most naive person on the planet who spends way too much time in fantasyland or something, but my bet is that Jimmy Page heard Joe's version of "Tea For One" before it was even on the CD, between the Kevin Shirley and Jason Bonham angle...Just my thinking...And I have to agree with Stu, some things just don't make any sense...

A little jealousy maybe?  I think it's all very tasteful and definitely not overplaying.

This whole topic has me reflecting on the rhetoric generated when Hendrix was the newer guitarist and came onto the London scene...There may be some surprise guests in the UK audience next time around...

A buzz good or bad is still a buzz. I think it is pretty cool to have been critiqued by Page good or bad. Got to think Jimmy's show off statement is akin to me calling a flat bellied twenty something dude on the beach with his shirt off, a show off.

Its Definately a taste thing what your all talking about.. If I made mistakes all over the song, people would say I'm sloppy.. Cant be all things to all people.  I am just glad to have had Jimmy listen to it and not say it sucks.  Some people like the rougher sloppy  style.  I did that solo in one take, I play the way I play..  I still think its cool that Jimmy Page was listening to my version of his song..

Thanks

It's a good thing I can't get my smileys working or they would be all over the place.  Phil, can I borrow just one more?  OK, the cheerleading outfit is back out of the closet for just a minute since I have to be at my son's jazz band performance...this is like history repeating itself and I am not exaggerating when I say many in the UK are just finding out about Joe saying they don't know how he didn't surface under their radar sooner....and don't be disillusioned how people relay things out of context.., And it's a HUGE compliment for Jimmy to be open minded towards Joe, IMO

Jimmy Page is jealous. Has anybody ever noticed how his playing deteriorated? Besides, that solo on Stairway isn't even real. It's many different solos spliced together. Bow down to the Rock god, Joe Bonamassa, Mr. Page!

Re: Ross halfin plays JOE's new disc for Jimmy Page.. Mixed comments!

I stopped taking Jimmy Page seriously when he did destroyed Led Zeppelin's "Kashmir" by letting P. Diddy (or Puff Daddy, or whatever the hell his name was a few years back) get a hold of it, and then appearing in that stupid video with him for that even MORE  stupid Godzilla movie - talk about a song that SUCKED!! I couldn't believe it when I saw it..

Joe did a great job with Tea For One- it's nor overplayed, it's just Joe, fabulous as usual... it doesn't suprise me one bit that he did it in one take, either wink

Re: Ross halfin plays JOE's new disc for Jimmy Page.. Mixed comments!

I will reserve comment for when I actually hear it, but I figure it will smoke, just like anything else Joe has done. However, at least Jimme Page heard, and didn't declare it was absolutely horrible.

Wow, very technical guitar with no mistakes?...showing off in the middle of the song?

What musician doesn't want to showcase his talents? (and since when did that become "showing off"?). I think someone needs to listen to Joe's version again and re-assess.
