Re: Ross halfin plays JOE's new disc for Jimmy Page.. Mixed comments!

I hope the day comes when we read a real interview with Jimmy Page and get to know how he truly feels about Joe covering "Tea For One".  After re-reading Ross's comments, which are ambiguous and unclear to say the least, I don't think anyone should be passing negative comments off about Jimmy Page, when we aren't exactly sure what he said.  All of the strong negative comments seem to be from Ross's point of view.  Jimmy said he liked the song and thought Joe was showing off a little bit in the middle, which leaves alot of room for interpretation and not necessarily negative.  So, just my thinking, that this is second hand information through a photographer's fuzzy viewpoint...IMHO

You did the solo in one take Joe?  Amazing.  I love it by the way.

I agree with Angela. I read the excerpt from the diary and it sounds like it's more what Ross was thinking and not necessarily what Jimmy's opinion was. I don't own the CD yet, but I have heard the song a couple times. If Ross and Jimmy knew that Joe did that solo in one take I think that they may use a term like "brilliant" instead of "showing off".

I'm not shocked one bit it took Joe only one take. Reasons why:

a) He works fast
b) He's friggin' good.

If Nirvana is guitar playing, then Joe is the Buddhamassa!!! smile

The boy is dedicated, that's for sure.... I would have loved to see him actually do that solo- damn....

Its Definately a taste thing what your all talking about.. If I made mistakes all over the song, people would say I'm sloppy.. Cant be all things to all people.  I am just glad to have had Jimmy listen to it and not say it sucks.  Some people like the rougher sloppy  style.  I did that solo in one take, I play the way I play..  I still think its cool that Jimmy Page was listening to my version of his song..

Thanks

my quote of the day is actually a old tired joke that I heard once.

That it certainly accolades for you Joe anyway you look at it.  Everybody has their own opinion (thank goodness).  The fact you did it one take should make some heads turn.

Guys like Jimmy Page, Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck should be tripping all over themselves to meet, jam with, collaborate with Joe! He's done more to turn a new generation of people onto their music than anyone.

Joe's NOT showing off Jimmy, he just isn't ten sheets to the wind when he plays. Sounds good when you do it though. roll

Re: Ross halfin plays JOE's new disc for Jimmy Page.. Mixed comments!

If you look back at some older guitar magazines there are quotes where Jimmy Page says he thinks Eddie Van Halen sucks........it started a long running feud between the two of them. I've also read some Page interviews where he gives very little credit to his band mates for Led Zepplin success. Doesn't surprise me his is stingy with compliments in this area as well.

For what it's worth, I played some of Joe's songs to Ritchie Blackmore some years ago when I was working for him and I played a little of "You and Me" to Glenn Hughes just the other week.
Both said that Joe is an amazing player! smile

I think Jimmy Page is probably as far from being jealous as one could get.. Jimmy Page has nothing to be jealous about. Joe would smoke Jimmy onstage now, or if there was some magic time machine he would smoke him when he was in his prime.. 2 different players with different styles.. Jimmy was/is a sloppy player, Joe makes very few mistakes..both are great in their own way. Billy Gibbons is a sloppy player, Robben Ford is not.. both are also great. I wouldn't put a lot of stock into those comments anyway, they are most likely out of context if they are even true.

Hi!
Those of us that have followed Joe and have listened to his music, and seen him live know that Joe plays that way all the time. What Jimmie might have been alluding to could be understood as Jimmie just not knowing that Joe is always that good, and thorough with his guitar (vocals, too).

Mozart was considered a show off.
Genius' normalcy is extraordinary, beyond our own talents, and might trigger defensive mechanisms to justify our own lack of such effortless talent.

As for it being a cover, and artists needing their own music, i think Joe has excelled in both departments.
I love ANDY and T41 partly because of the memories of my youth it invokes.
I love Joe's originals for the same kine power, and substance.

I saw Jimmie and his band back in the 70's. They were great, and i thought Jimmie was a goD, but his guitar didn't mesmorize me like Joe's. Trower, Stevie, Jimi, Montrose, Meneketti...Joe Bonamassa. Those guys and a little Angus and his mates, and im all set.

aloha!

(were tuning in tom'r'w nite to catch Joe on VH1. Hope to see Joe get his props. Disco's dead, long live Ted.)

Re: Ross halfin plays JOE's new disc for Jimmy Page.. Mixed comments!

Joe not only improves a song once he covers it, he makes the original artists wish they were able to play half as well as he does.

Consistency is a #@$@#. And Joe is consistently awesome! The fact that he's been playing so well for so long means we're all very blessed to witness such talent.

Rock on, Joe!

I think there are many innovative players from the 60's & 70's
paul k. from free
jimi h.
j beck
jimmy page
peter g.
etc.
SRV in later days..

but, JOE is now...
He plays dirty, clean, great vibrato, and uses
his floor pedals to ehance his music not to cover
up mistakes..

One big difference..
He's not a sloppy player!
And people are beginning to
figure out that he's for real!!

Re: Ross halfin plays JOE's new disc for Jimmy Page.. Mixed comments!

Let's make one thing perfectly clear, Jimmy Page was/is the most overrated guitar player of all time. He happened to be in a good band when electric/psychedelic blues was getting big. Led Zeppelin hit the scene at just the right time to make it big. I am not saying he sucks, I am just saying that he is incredibly overrated.
Joe Bonamassa is a better player than Jimmy ever was, or will be.

I had to wiggle free from my duct tape to say a few things...

Dissecting Joe Bonamassa and Jimmy Page at this high level of scrutiny, is like slicing open an apple and an orange only to find out how different they are!!  Joe Bonamassa and Jimmy Page are two of the greatest guitarists of all time, coming from totally different musical eras, with different playing styles...

I think Joe Bonamassa covered "Tea For One" to the best of his incredible ability to show the ultimate respect for Jimmy Page.  Some of the comments here show the ultimate disrespect towards Jimmy Page.

The next time you listen to Joe's awesome version of "Tea For One", try to keep in mind that Jimmy Page created the masterpiece in the first place!!!  And if you respect Joe Bonamassa, reconsider how you word your negative opinions!!!  These are just my feelings on this and I realize I'm just a fan like everybody else...

Peace!  Have a great Memorial Day weekend everyone!

Angela, I couldn't have said it better myself! Jimmy and Joe are gods of guitar!

I think everyone needs to Drop this! This is all here- say!!!  For one, any guitar player is going to be flattered by someone else doing there song. I have heard a lot of J.B’s playing & I think Joe is in no way over playing in the solo on Tea for One at all...I have been playing & recording for 20 years.. If anything, I would of had him step on the waah more in the middle of the solo & burn the hell out of it. I would of loved to hear Joe sing it too! I doubt jimmy ever said “The vocals on Tea for One are better than the original” That would be a major slam On Robert.

“Joe” you did this song justice & then some! Great job!

Re: Ross halfin plays JOE's new disc for Jimmy Page.. Mixed comments!

Jimmy Page deserves way more respect than what he's getting. Just the way I look at it. He doesn't suck, he was in the greatest band of all-time, and was the principle guy in that band. Regardless of what scene let them become big artists, that doesn't mean squat when concerning how timeless Zeppelin's music has become. There were many bands that became big during that time, but how many have become as iconic as Led Zeppelin? The reason why Zeppelin is so huge to this day is because their music is just as potent now as it was back in 1975. Yes he was sloppy at times, but that doesn't underscore the fact that how influential he was. BB King is not the most complicated guitar player, but that doesn't dilute his influence on blues or other forms of music. Joe is strong enough as a musician to stand on his own merits, you don't have to bring down Jimmy Page to build your case for Joe Bonamassa.

Now, if you'll excuse me, I'm going to put on Led Zeppelin II and enjoy myself.
