Went to Goodwood last year and was amazed at the number of vintage F1 cars they had on display.  Cars driven by Andrea de Cesaris (amazed that one was still in one piece bearing in mind his nickname of "de Crasharis"), Thierry Boutsen, Ricardo Patrese ... and older ones lovingly restored and looked after by petrolheads.  It's a great day out.

I'd love to attend that event someday. We have a gentleman racer circuit out here that allows them to run those cars. Son was wrench on one a few years back. Schumi's Ferrari V12 W.C. car from the late 90's. What a glorious sound
An amazing assembly of 16 GT40's running right now in a very good competition!

Lucky son!  First time I went to Silverstone for practice day the sound of those glorious V12s was the first thing I heard on arriving.  Brought tears to my eyes it was SO sweet.  I'm no petrolhead but love the sound of a gutsy engine.  That was waaay back when there were V8s, V10s .... but the Ferrari's just sounded magnificent.

Yeah, I got a cell call from him at practice on the big track at Fontana. He didn't say a word, just held his phone up so I could hear that car flat out at full song running about 15Krevs in the big straight into the high bank. EEEEEEEAAAAAAAAAAAOOOOOOOOO!  We went up and watched them run the next day, got the cooks pit tour too, I even got to sit in it. cool The new ones are faster but lack that panache.

Re: New F1 season kicks off this weekend

Just noticed this thread ... I used to be a big F1 fan back in the 80's, but I lost interest after Senna's death and didn't follow the sport much.

But now my sons are into it, after I bought them CodeMaster's F1 game for the XBox...

So much so that I will be flying to Singapore this weekend with my eldest boy to catch the race there... Looking forward to it!

Thanks Rick, good find!

And Devan ... hope you have a great weekend in Singapore.  Not a big fan of the night circuit myself but Singapore looks like a great place to visit.  I too lost a great deal of interest in f1 after Senna's untimely death so the 00s were a bit lost on me, but I think we've now got some great racers and champions.  Have a fab time!

Re: New F1 season kicks off this weekend

Well it is lap 42 in Singapore and I am finding it a complete bore. No overtaking to speak of with or without DRS.Immediately after the safety car period Vettel pulls out a 20 second lead in about 10 laps. It is a joke. Is he really that good? Well he must be, or the tactics of the others are just white.

Whatever Singapore 2013 is nothing to write home about, one of the worst races(!) This season. Total Vettel dominance. Good for him, crap for the rest of us.......

Agreed. A F/B pal is there for a holiday and the race. He's been enjoying the spectacle and Singapore is a fab city to visit. Vettel in a cake walk.

Re: New F1 season kicks off this weekend

Yeahat that point I was probably be a bit frustrated. By lap 52 it had spiced up a bit but only as the group with fresher tyres started to move up the order.

I mean, a 33 second win is a cake walk, especially as he pulled that out from a safety car period. Webber is no mug, and yet in the same car he couldn't get past Rosberg. So a big part of it IS Vettel, and being out in front does give him better control. Even so. I guess if you factor that Alonso has a car that is a second off the Red bull then the fact he finished second only 33 seconds off Vettel means he did a brilliant job too!

Funny though that Webbers car breaks again as it has sooo many times these last 4 years. No conspiracy theories here, but RBull being the team that they are it is noticeable that often they only get one car to the finish without problems and that is normally Vettel's.

I have no doubt that Alonso, Raikkonen and Hamilton could all do a similar job in THAT car. Rosberg too, I think, so you can't really call him (Vettel), the best there is just now. He's just the guy with the best car and team doing a great job maximising the (small) advantage that he has.

That makes him a worthy soon to be 4 time World Champion I guess. Roll on next year.

I like F1 as much as I ever did, I just don't see how after the variety of 07,08,09 and 2010 it has got into this rut of a single team dominating again.

What I do find disappointing is how little progress the back 2 teams seemed to have made. I notice that Caterham and Marussia's qualifying times were almost 6 seconds off pole. I recall at the end of the last 5 year period most of the grid had closed to within a second and a half. These guys have got a massive job still to do. They need to be finding about 2.5 seconds just to get close to the midfield runners. Thats a lifetime in F1 terms.

I can't imagine what the motivation for Max Chilton is having to find 4 million quid+ just to sit in a Marussia and get lapped after 15 tours. I suppose it has always been so, but in the '70's/80's drivers at least had the chance to jump in a March, McLaren or older Lotus and pick up a point or two. It meant sponsors, teams and drivers got a better bang for their buck and the sport benefitted too.

I find it a shame they didn't allow year old cars to filter through to these guys. Wouldn't matter for next year of course as it is a whole new era starting.

Re: New F1 season kicks off this weekend

I didn't get to see much of the race, just the start and finish, and guess I didn't miss much.  Good result for Kimi though finishing a creditable third after qualifying well down in 13th, and with a back problem too.  Bet his new Ferrari team mate is worried.

At home we were discussing why it is that Red Bull/Vettel are just so dominant.  We too came to the conclusion that you could stick an Alonso, Hamilton or a Button in the Red Bull and they'd probably get the same result.  Same as if you put Vettel into the Marussia.  Sure he'd give it a good go but the car just doesn't deliver.  So is Vettel the best driver or is it down to the equipment?  The only way to find out for sure is to give all the drivers the same chassis, engine, tyres etc and let them fight it out.  But then that's not what F1's all about.  Trouble is that Red Bull have now been so dominant for the past four years it's getting a little tedious.

Have to feel a little for Seb though.  Having got booed on the podium at the last two races, his detractors were once again out in Singapore forcing Martin Brundle, who was doing the post-race interviews, to intervene on Seb's behalf.  I think Seb's a nice enough chap and regardless of whether I like him as a driver that sort of behaviour by so-called fans shouldn't be tolerated.

Re: New F1 season kicks off this weekend

Well, the race weekend was really enjoyable.  We had 3 day 'roving' seats so got to enjoy the practice and qualifying from the Padang, Bay and main straight.

Vettel and Webber were always at least a second faster than the other cars in ALL the sessions.  The RBs are just that much better it seems.  The Ferraris and Mercedes AMGs were having trouble sticking to the track - I couldn't believe how much Alonso's and Massa's back ends were sliding out and they were kissing the walls.

We were seated right at Turn 1 for the race, and I nearly jumped out of my seat when I saw Rosberg take that first corner - but then joy turned to anguish as I saw Vettel retake the lead at turn 3.  I am not the hugest fan of SV, but all respect to him for just the way he outdrove everyone else.

He was like clockwork - All 61 laps that he went past us were consistent.  The engine sounds and gear changes were EXACTLY the same each time, as was his line.  Almost all other drivers at one time or another botched the line through turns 1,2 and 3 and ran off the track, but Vettel never did.

I don't get the detractors either, and I stood up and applauded him at the end when he did his victory lap.

Everyone at the track basically gave up on the number one position 1/3 of the way through the race, and the focus was on the Raikonnen/Perez battle, and Hamilton & Rosberg fighting their way through the other midfielders.

Gotta feel for Webber.  Even though I am an Aussie, I don't consider myself a huge Webber fan, but I really felt for the guy when his engine blew on the second last lap.  And then for him to get a 10 place penalty for hitching a lift from Alonso - Gosh, I bet he can't wait to leave formula 1.

His successor didn't really cover himself in glory, being the first bingle for the GP and forcing the safety car out on the track... Hopefully Ricciardo can do better in the #2 seat at RB next year.

For those of you who are on Facebook, I posted a few pics of the race weekend...

Re: New F1 season kicks off this weekend

Ahhhh. Another Red Bull conspiracy theory. How we love those. Anoter chance to 'prove' Vettel isn't as good as he looks.

Good old Giancarlo Minardi blogged his thoughts on Vettels car performance at Singapore and 'asked' some questions over strange exhaust notes under acceleration, and almost staggering non-slip grip out of Singapores numerous turns.

Most ignored it at first, but now the rumour mill is in full action. Traction control? RB cheating?

It would be lovely to think so. Hamilton has studied the footage and moans that the last time he had accelration like that out of a corner was 2008 with traction control........

But it isn't, unfortunately for the rest of them. RB and Renault have been tinkering, yes, with engine mapping and exhaust output. All within the rules and the scope of the standard ECU they all use. Both RB's have it and used it in the race. As usual it is more suited to Vettel's technique or he can better adapt to its characteristics.

Result, Vettel tailors his driving into and through a corner, the engine modulates its output and exhaust flow and magically creates a traction control effect that allows Vettel to plant his right foot with impunity.

I hate to admit it but the guy is right 'out there'. Alonso and Hamilton and some of the others could all do it too given the chance, but thats it. He has the chance and has taken it. The chance itself is also contained within a fairly small window of ability and performance. After all, Webber has been unable access it consistently enough to dent Vettels rise to dominance these last years.

It is impressive stuff. I welcome the rule changes next year as this will be the only chance to stop his dominance of the sport, but that period won't last long. If RB hit the ground running expect to see him disappear up the road once again. He is that good.................

Re: New F1 season kicks off this weekend

Great drivers + great engineers = dominance. You have to give it to RB for consistently putting their number one in the best stuff and finding that tiny edge that makes all the difference.

Re: New F1 season kicks off this weekend

Absolutely Rick.  If Red Bull can make the car work better legally then that's up to great engineering and design, so good for them.  Even Alonso (who, driving for Ferrari who normally like things to work in their favour rather than anyone else's) said there is nothing illegal about the Red Bulls' set up.  Interesting to read Devan's observations about how Vettel cornerned at Singapore.  It brings to mind the late, great Ayrton Senna who used his throttle to great extent through the corners, just a light feathering technique to keep the car on track without losing speed.  It's really up to the rest of the pack to use technology to their advantage.

Korea should be fun.  Look out for the empty stands ....

Re: New F1 season kicks off this weekend

Always had one team/driver combo dominant-same old same old-and why not boo,i remember taking GREAT delight at boo-ing Schumi at the British GP'S,didn't do him any harm,it's a sport where heros and villains compete-i'll cheer who i want and boo who i want.regardless if they're the best out there,it's up to the rest to get off their a***s and do something about it.Respect to Seb,championship no.4 is his, well deserved imho, but will watch Korea mid-morning,not one to set the alarm for.......anyone going to Silverstone next year?  smile

Come on you Blades!

Re: New F1 season kicks off this weekend

Well no real surprises from Korea but thank goodness Mark Webber escaped from his burning car.  That's a sight you don't want to see in a GP.  A cakewalk for Vettel but a great second from Kimi (yeah!).  Have to feel sorry for Lewis. He complained of graining but the team said he would be ok and held him out to leave his teammate to come into the pits to change tyres.  Loved seeing Alonso and his next year's team mate Raikonnen battling it out.  Next year will be juicy with those two!
