Topic: Slide material

Do you guys use glass or metal slides? I have a glass one and I know DT plays glass, but Joe doesn't. I was wondering your preferences

Re: Slide material

I play a brass eric sardinas signature when the need for slide tickles me. I have tried glass but prefer the sustain and brighter tone from brass.

Re: Slide material

I prefer glass though I am pretty crap I just cant seem to get to grips with slide yet sad anytips?

Re: Slide material

I like both, but Joe has to use metal slides because glass isn't magnetic... roll
glass sounds a bit sweeter and doesn't produce so much distortions.

If I'm playing slide guitar I don't use a pick, I'm just using my fingers, that makes it more controlable...

Ceramic here. I use the Joe Perry slide. Metal ones I find are really hard to control, in terms of other strings ringing when you don't want them to.

Re: Slide material

I use metal - its sounds fuller to me - glass sounds hollow.  I started on glass, and then decided to pickup a chrome slide and haven't looked back.  It fit better, my control was better, and I could whip it around faster like Johny Winter smile while still having great note clarity, definition, and articulation.  I have no problems with overtones with metal, but I dampen everything like a mad man.  Oh, and I use mostly fingers, but keep a pick tucked away in my hand for when you "want" that old Elmore Jame's - Dust My Broom type of lick - just doesn't sound right with fingers wink.

Re: Slide material

I switch back and worth a lot.  Depends on the guitar I'm playing mostly.  Strats I use metal mostly and Gibsons I use glass.  When I use metal I use a pick and play really sloppy like Jimmy Page type sounds.  Gibsons I try to get a Duane Allman sound but it comes off more like some dude that sucks at slide guitar.  Most of the time I'll only pull the slide out when I'm jamming with 2 more guitar players to sound different.
