Topic: SNOW!

Okay, I know I sound like a total kid, but snow's just great, haha. Thanks to 2 days of snow in Britain, me and all my friends have been uber-excited, as we all know, SNOW = NO SCHOOL XD
So I still havent hada full day back at school yet this year, and have had more snowball fights than I've had lessons, and thrown more snowball's than I've done maths equations cool
Only bad thing is the cold KILLS ya fingersss, and there's awful road accidents hmm
But MAN it's cool to have everyone lookin out the window to check for it while I teachers are tryin to tell us 'we won't go home' wink But they know they love it too.
AHH IT'S SO FUN, haha
Ok, calm now,,,,,

Re: SNOW!

Snow was cool back when it got me out of school, but now that all it means is fewer customer because they're all losing their minds at the local supermarket, snow sucks.

Re: SNOW!

Sound great Russ, enjoy the extra time off. I only had 1 snow day when I was in school here in Vegas and it was a blast! We had a huge snowball fight at the intersection of the street that I grew up on. This poor kid with bright red hair was riding by on a motor scooter and he was blasted. When he rode off his hair was as white as snow. Oh yeah it was snow smile

Take care, and throw one for me.
Bill

Re: SNOW!

Ok Russ - snow can be fun:

BUT - since I have one of those jobs that I have to go to no matter what the weather it can be seriously not fun:

Right now our midwest is buried in snow and way below freezing temps - stay safe folks!

Re: SNOW!

Here in Hastings on the South East Coast of England my children think this the most snow they have ever seen.

My fondest memory of snow is the famous winter of '63 when we had snow for weeks on end and 6-8 foot snowdrifts, fabulous cool

Re: SNOW!

We know that England has had even more than we have, but I have never in my 20 years here seen 3-4 inches fall (and stick) within less than two hours!

The whole country normally expects to use no more than 70k tons of salt for the roads during a winter - Feb/Mar are usually the heaviest months here! - but they've already used up 100k tons! Of course, there are now shortages....a ship full of salt is on the way (seriously!), while one town has bought eight tons of multi-colored bath salts to dump on its roads. lol

Oh yeah, Amsterdam suffered what they call "traffic meltdown" yesterday afternoon and evening. For those of you who know the area at all, the entire ring motorway was at a standstill, as were the feeder roads to Schiphol and the north. The jams (just) around the city came to more than 100 kms! The last jams did not clear up till after midnight, with journeys that normally take say, 30 minutes, taking 3-4 hours last night. I was safe and warm indoors! tongue

Holy icicles, Batman, that is some serious weather there, Rick! That second pic is particularly stunning, and puts our pathetic few inches and mere -6 to -10 to shame. tongue

That shot is from a small town just over the border in Czech, about 40 minutes from Dresden, a couple of days before Christmas. I am a native of Southern California and had never experienced snow and cold like that in my life.

That day was utterly, ethereally beautiful.

As you can see, every twig was covered by hoarfrost and  the air was full of glittering rainbows from an ice crystal fog. A magical day which I hope to never re-experience!  Thank God for Slivovitz antifreeze. lol

edit. BTW, just for you cold weather folk, left Berlin on 1/3. It was -6 C. Arrived in San Diego to 26 C. cool Now that's more like it.

Such hardship Roy - How long were you stranded in those miserable conditions? lol

And I loved those pics of yours Sandy - maybe you should take the train to work.

We generaly struggle in with snow in England - the whole country grinds to a halt when the first few flakes settle - but in fairness, some places have had it bad this time and it seems there's no let up un the sub-zero temperatures for another week or so. There was a 50 mile Jam on the A1 trunk road in the north-east the other night, with some folks having to spend 16 hours (including overnight) in their cars.
I can just about remember that winter of '63 as a kid - when we opened our door, the drift up against it was bigger than me!
Roll on summer!

Re: SNOW!

We've been pretty badly hit. The village of Benson which is 7-8 miles away recorded -17.7C yesterday. We've had 25cm (10") of snow drifting to over a metre. I haven't even tried to move the car but we have now dug it out of it's own little snow drift which took all morning.

Here are some photos taken on Wednesday of the South Oxfrordshire countryside near our house.

Re: SNOW!

Great photos Currymandavid. Snow is sure pretty to look at, just a pain to deal with.

My wife just viewed them and said we were lucky to have flown out through the UK just before that hit. Could have been stuck there by the weather. Here in the US the freeze has extended clear down to Florida. Rick

Ian,

We put up with those "terrible" conditions for a week. It was awful, simply awful. This one young lady with a carrying tray, kept asking me if I wanted another "Mango Tango" to drink while I was laying there. She obviously knew I was suffering terribly. And those two young women? They were shy at first, but I used my old standby which made them very friendly...........
Yes, I told them I knew Joe Bonamassa and as you can see, it worked pretty well for this old man. wink

Realistically though, I should tell you that we did get about 10 inches of new snow yesterday. I think my decorative Christmas lawn ornaments will be sitting right where they are until April; they are a bit frozen in place. roll big_smile

David - which drift was your car in?

Michael - too funny, too close to home - I remember getting a split lip from a sled spill as a kid - stuck to toboggans and skis after that!
