Topic: Favorite Guitar Magazine?

I figured I'd post this question here since most gear heads visit these pages.

So what do you buy, subcribe to, read? I really started thinking about this after receiving the latest Guitar World mag and realizing how much I don't care for it. Usually way to much shred.

Favorite mag. for me? GUITARIST out of the UK. Only draw back metric and pounds. Second favorite, Guitar Player, they cover it all.

Well, thats my 2 cents.

Re: Favorite Guitar Magazine?

Anyone with Joe or Rik. You don't see many with Rik anymore, too bad.

Re: Favorite Guitar Magazine?

Guitar Techniques by far IMO!!!

Re: Favorite Guitar Magazine?

Guitarist UK - though I'm not sure why I fork out so much for it every month. I just like gear geekery.

Re: Favorite Guitar Magazine?

Guitarist is not what it used to be. Whilst I still get it, I prefer Guitar Buyer these days as it's got more of what I'm interested in within its pages.

There are 10 kinds of people who understand binary.
Those who do and those who do not.

Vintage Guitar

Re: Favorite Guitar Magazine?

Definitely Guitarist.

Used to get others, but now it's mainly Guitarist (get a subscription for US delivery, you save some bucks and get it a month ahead of the newstands).

Pick up Guitar Techniques once in awhile (another UK mag), but not much interest in the others anymore.

Besides, it's interesting to look at the UK prices on stuff compared to the USA. wink

The new issue I just received (324? not sure. It's got the Manson guitar on the cover) has been tweaked a bit. I really like the redone technique section and who doesn't like Charles Shar Murray?

Nothin' but the Blues

Re: Favorite Guitar Magazine?

The one with the most half naked women in it advertising geeky guitar gear they have no clue about! wink I love it, its as if you bought that tacky looking coffin case it would pop open with a smokin' hot chick in it or something...

Seriously though, I do all my guitar reading/research online so the magazines are mainly for thumbing through.  I did enjoy the Joe cover that went over his entire rig in detail though. Alas, nothing in it wasn't already mentioned here.

'67 and '74 Fender Twin Reverbs, '74 Marshall 1987 lead mkII, Metro Superlead 100. Pedals from TC Electronic, Ibanez, Dunlop, BK Butler, Electro-Harmonix, Fulltone, Maestro/Gibson, Loopmaster switching, VoodooLab, Boss. Gibson and Fender guitars, Dimarzio pickups.

Re: Favorite Guitar Magazine?

Vintage Guitar is the only Mag worth buying/reading. I haven't read GP since Jas Obrecht left. Remember the good old days when the flexi tear out disks came- Steve Vai Attitude Song and EJ's original live ASL cut of Cliffs. Ugh- I'm old.

Hell of a lot better than the bore Mick Wall in Classic Rock. Nobody cares Mick, nobody cares! lol

Re: Favorite Guitar Magazine?

Vintage Guitar is my favorite.
I subscribed to Guitarist for a few years but the expense just wore me out...I still think they have the best gear reviews though.

Vintage Guitar...none more betterer

Where the hell does one get a black-backed gold top anyway?

Re: Favorite Guitar Magazine?

Guitarist from the UK; far better than any of the over-advertisement laden rags here in the US

Re: Favorite Guitar Magazine?

1. Guitar Player - seems to have more interviews with important musicians
2. Vintage Guitar - Seems to have more helpful tips on mods and rare information.
3. Guitar Techniques - Mostly tabs!!! score
4. Guitarist - but here where I buy it it cost double what it does in the UK.

Re: Favorite Guitar Magazine?

I vote for Premier Guitar.

Re: Favorite Guitar Magazine?

Without a doubt, Guitar Player.  Vintage guitar has some good articles and pictures, but Guitar Player is truly the best all around magazine.  I feel this way because GP highlights all aspects of playing, from gear and artists to lessons.  Also the artists and lessons span all genres.  I am a blues/rock player, but also a jazz player, and GP frequently has great articles and lessons on jazz guitarists where as a magazine like Guitar World tends to focus more on rock and metal.  Not to mention GP's Michael Molenda has some great editorial columns..

For getting better - Guitar Techniques
For news - Guitarist
