Topic: 40 Years Ago In Rock

It was 40 years ago yesterday, Dec. 6, 1969, that the "Summer of Love" was officially laid to rest at the Altamont Speedway outside of Livermore, Ca. where the Rolling Stones held their ill-fated free concert. If you've never seen the film Gimme Shelter get a copy and see for yourself just how ugly rock n roll could be. Many factors contributed to this fiasco. The gig was originally supposed to be in Golden Gate Park in San Francisco, but the city asked the Stones not to say anything until 24 hrs. prior to keep the crowd to a minimum, but when Jagger spilled the news to the press the city yanked the permit and the scramble was on to find a suitable venue. It's no wonder Bill Graham wanted nothing to do with this operation, even speaking to the media saying what a bad idea it was. The biggest mistake was the Grateful Dead bringing in their usual security, the Hell's Angels, which resulted in many beatings and one stabbing death. There were 4 deaths total 2 hit and runs and 1 from drowning in an irrigation ditch. Fortunately I let my Dad talk me out of quitting my job to attend this mess. Not one of my friends that made it the show had anything positive to say about it. Indeed a dark day in music history. "Paint it black you devil."

Yep, it was ugly. I was there. Not a lot of peace and love that day.

Good Lord! 40 years, thanks for making me feel so old. Another veteran of the Rock n Roll wars. Rick

Re: 40 Years Ago In Rock

I remember sitting thru that movie 3 times (back in the day when they let you do that!) at the old Exeter Street Theater in Boston - cool movie, but scary in the Altamont part.  My first concert experience was seeing the Stones on this tour when they played in Boston in 1969 - I will never forget Mick traipsing around the stage with his Omega jumpsuit and long lavendar scarf.  In shades of things to come I managed to end up right in front of the stage (with my Dad's camera).  Some things never change.  I still have the program I bought at that show - weird drawing of Mick on the cover looking very feminine!

Has it really been forty years?

Definitely not a Sargeant Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club band show...
"Paint it black you devil." The chick yelling for Paint It Black on Get Yer Ya-Ya's Out!, the live album recorded over 2 nights in Madison Square Garden less than 10 days prior! The music reigns on that, then trouble reigns on the soft parade out west.  Weapons at a concert??? Lessons learned!

Actually reminded me of some drunk bleepity at the Hot August Blues Festival during Derek Trucks Band's set.  I think the one and only one come to think of it.  Everyone else was maximum cool and nice...

Re: 40 Years Ago In Rock

I was suckered into going to a Stones stadium concert by a mate who assured me it was their last tour.

Great show, rubbish sound, like a loud  £10 transistor radio in a dustbin.

I think they've played a few since, this was about 1982.

Done up like a kipper.

Re: 40 Years Ago In Rock

I bought that DVD looking forward to some real live footage of the Stones in their hay day.  The live shots were good but I've seen much better old live videos of them.  The interviews were a bit spaced out and I sure wasn't expecting the ending.  I was 21 when I bought that DVD didn't read the info on the back of the case talking about the Stabbing.  I really got a kick out of an interview once by the The Hells Angle that was charged with the stabbing.  He totally to this day believes if you touch his bike your going to get stuck.  I think he claimed that he had a gun but I don't believe it.   I do know that the Hells Angles hate the Rolling Stones.  Good piece of history but the Movie is entirely too long!
