The MURDER of music for the small label artist...

I was supposed to be interviewing the guitar player Borislav Mitic but he is fighting this good fight. See, his new CD to be released December 4th, has already been fileshared several thousand times and Borislav is wondering how he will eat in 2010......

Re: The murder of music...

I agree and disagree with this.. so maybe my opinion will be unpopular!

I think the music industry model is now outdated and behind the times. Personally, I don't own a CD player anymore. I don't buy CD's either, all my music is digital. My whole collection is now on my home network. I don't host any of this stuff online, and I've obtained all albums legally.

I'll admit I freely download live recordings and odd bits that the artist has not released commercially, fan recordings etc or rare tracks that you just can't get anywhere.

I'm also a Spotify subscriber and this gets used everywhere.. at home, at work. I have a USB headunit in my car and my whole library fits on one (rather large) memory stick.

I also go to a lot of live shows, on the local scene and the mainstream. Now.. here comes the interesting part!

I'm happy to pay up to about £10 to see a really good local band, most will never charge more than £5 and for that you can normally catch three bands and hear something that challenges you. Its great to support the scene, and you can tell the guys really appreciate it. I'll decide if I want to go and see a particular band after checking out myspace or something where you can hear their songs FOR FREE.

I begrudge paying £30 a ticket for a live show now.. factor in travel costs and a bit of spending money and I'm looking at the best part of £100 for a night out. Only to then be told if I take a picture I'll be ejected, no video, no audio.

Although.. I quite happily spent out on 5 tickets to see Joe next year at just over £30 each and can't bloody wait.

Why?

Because Joe has cracked it... he works hard for his fans. We all feel like a little bit of Joe belongs to each and every one of us, he drops in here, runs competitions and generally gives a lot back. He puts everything into his live shows and his music and seems very humbled to be doing what he's doing. As a result I've bought EVERYTHING he's ever released and feel like I've gotten a good deal out of it. There are quite a few other artists I feel this way about and some of them are big time, others arn't!

Why on earth should I fork over my hard earned cash on some band who are just after my money. They do the bare minimum and are basically a cash cow for the greedy record labels who are digging their heels in and clinging to the heady days when they controlled everything.

The industry and some artists need to wake up, we arn't all thieves but we are all FED UP with being mugged off.

Re: The murder of music...

Greg P agreed.

I will fork out hard earned money (and lots of it) for Joe. He has worked so hard and is still the most genuine guy out there giving everyone what they want.

There are some "music" pigs out there however, who deserve nothing. They sign contracts and agree to things, but they don't play for the love of it. They play for the love of themselves. They still keep making money to afford what they want, so I am not bothered whatsoever if people are grabbing what they want off them. It is not going to make a difference to anyone if half a million people download Susan Boyle's album for free...Simon Cowell's bank account already displays "error" because it's run out of zeros.

Re: The murder of music...

LOL agreed with somewhat..  gents.  Joe has it CRACKED.  He is the new breed.  He gives me hope.  All stuff I've said before. smile

Who calls out what's justified stealing and what isn't?  I do what I can live with.  Make the music that you love and if it sells, because you're good at it AND good To it...all the better.  But stealing is...

well, stealing.

Re: The murder of music...

I'm not saying what is or isn't stealing. Also I try very hard not to get something for free that has been released commercially.

I simply refuse to spend money on products or shows from artists I feel are giving me a bad deal. I also think many, many other people are doing exactly the same thing. Which is why the music industry is suffering, not because of 'the internetz zomg' but because people are realising how it works!

Personally, i'd never sign to a big label. Even if they offered me a bazillion pounds.

So.. internet piracy is ruining the film and music industry is it?

So why are cinema attendances currently higher than they have ever been and people are spending more money than EVER before on live shows and music. In a recession.

Maybe if the film companies didnt stick the rent so high on big releases that the cinemas LOSE money on every ticket they sell, or record labels actually started investing in bands and developing artists again instead of this stupid hit factory culture we have then things would change.

I mean.. Simon Cowell currently has something to do with 25% of the music in the Top 40... One man... thousands of musicians... suspect much? Oh, and he's just announced a global version of the X Factor. Deep Joy.

..I didnt realise I had quite so much to say about this! haha
