Topic: Govt Mule, Munich

could make it short and say.....................the mule were cool..................but that wouldnt be enough and not really right. they were hot, damn hot. that was an evening to remember for me. seldom you see somebody playing who is so into his instrument and in his music, warren haynes was in there with every trop of his blood........oder jeder faser seines körpers, we say in german. a real delight to see the whole rest of the band who give warren a great sounding fundament for his solos and arrangements.
gotta start working now...............after 2,5 hours sleep thats getting a bit hard maybe.............but i am still on "cloud mule"
nice day

Good news, Thomas: after another 20 minutes of waiting in the cold and as we were already heading to the car Warren came out and I got your autograph. And Eva got another birthday celebation.

thanx a lot günter for waiting so long. sure the guys take their time after a set like it was last night.

Re: Govt Mule, Munich

Haha, "cloud mule" really says it all ... this band is so close my image of the "perfect band", it´s ridiculous.

Honestly, I couldn´t have asked for a better birthday present ... it was beyond words. Three hours went by like three minutes and thanks to Farmer I got a very special birthday celebration on top of it all. smile
I´ll write more about the show and post the setlist later, but up to now I´m still speechless....

Re: Govt Mule, Munich

Here´s the setlist from Wednesday -

Set 1
One of These Days
Thorazine Shuffle
I Believe To My Soul
Banks of The Deep End
Rocking Horse
Beautifully Broken
Need Your Love So Bad
Patchwork Quilt
Slackjaw Jezebel

Set 2
Broke Down On The Brazos
Lay Your Burden Down>
Smokestack Lightning>
Lay Your Burden Down
Steppin' Lightly
Streamline Woman
Drums
Railroad Boy
Monday Mourning Meltdown
Mule

Encore 1
Tastes Like Wine

Encore 2
It Hurts Me Too

That´s about as good as it gets (well, the all time favourite "Soulshine" was missing, but as we heard Warren do that one with the Allmans this summer it was all good wink)... Especially the new songs from "By a thread" sounded just as great as I thought they would - the live versions were pretty close to the album versions (which is a good thing considering HOW good the album is...) and I think I totally ruined my voice screaming when they played both "Brazos" and "Railroad boy", which are two of my top favourites from the new album. No "Inside Outside Woman Blues", but you can´t have it all ... "Monday Mourning Meltdown" and "Steppin Lightly" were both superb as well. The new bass man is great btw ... they just seemed like a very well-practised, harmonic, "round" band - more like one breathing being than 4 seperated band members...
My personal hightlights of the first set were "Beautifully Broken" (thanks for the pick Warren - how did you know this was my favourite song?? wink) and a very emotional version of "Need your love so bad" - Peter was there if you closed your eyes, it was just .... wow. Nobody plays like Peter Green, but Warren made his LP sound so very sweet, it was just like that song has to be played ... to the point how it has to sound.
My Heavy Metal fan - roomie Dennis totally freaked out about "Slackjaw Jezebel" which was indeed the rocking highlight of set 1, I think Mule made a new fan that moment.
The second set was just one big trip through musical heaven really ... everytime I had a look at the clock I just thought - "please don´t ever let that end" ... lol! It did end at around half past 11 with a last Blues goodie - "It hurts me too", oh yeah! cool
The audience was totally euphoric and we left the hall on "cloud mule", like Thomas said. I think I still haven´t left it though ... what a band! I think if they don´t tour Europe more often than they used to do in the past, we´ll have to make the America-Trip an annual event, haha ... one can dream. --- Ben, Beacon Run??? lol

When Farmer animated the fans waiting outside to sing another "happy birthday" for me after the show and I got a "happy birthday" signature and congratulations from Warren I could finally go home being a very, very happy birthday-girl. smile

Re: Govt Mule, Munich

Wow, Eva, what a great post. No wonder you took a couple of days to put it together. It sounds like you had a truly wonderful birthday. big_smile

How did you receive the pick? Afterwards by the stage door or did Warren mention your birthday during the show and give it to you then? yikes

There are lots of my favourites in this set list, too. What amazes me is that the Mule never seem to play the same set twice, even on consecutive nights. They must have incredible memories. smile

Thanks for sharing your birthday and the Mule gig with us, Eva. I can hardly wait until next week when I'll be seeing them. hmm Thanks for whetting my appettite even more (if that's possible).

What a fantastic year of concerts you've had. I doubt it will ever be bettered. wink

Re: Govt Mule, Munich

Sounds like a perfect birthday, Eva.  Happy Birthday from me too, I guess late is better than never.  Cloud Mule and Cloud Joe are both awesome places to be.  When they get together, the perfect storm.  We can hope for more.

Re: Govt Mule, Munich

Thanks for the reviews folks, and I'm happy to read that Eva you had such a special birthday! smile Gov't Mule do sound like a superb live act - a thunderstorm indeed! I'd happily go to see them should the opportunity arise (it won't with only one UK gig though!)
