As a Seattle Seahawks fan, I'm not happy this morning.

The Seahawks let Mike Holmgren get away in favor of Jim Mora, and now Mora's out.

Now the Seahawks have hired Pete Carroll from USC as their new head coach. While he's had success at the collegiate level, Carroll's pro career has been less than stellar.

He was one-and-done as the NY Jets coach with a record of 6-10. At New England he inherited a Super Bowl team and went 10-6, followed by 9-7 and then 8-8 when he was fired.

With the likes of Bill Cowher (who would have been my first choice), Tony Dungy and Jon "Chucky" Gruden all available - and all Super Bowl coaches - I'm less than pleased about this hire.

Well, at least coming from USC we'll have a coach with experience dealing with highly paid players.

Well Stu, good luck with Pete Carroll. Don't believe his departure from SC was solely to try his hand in the NFL (In Pete's case that's Not For Long). Like rats on a sinking ship, Carroll, the A.D. and I heard the Univ. president are all jumping ship with a 2 year investigation into athletic program inpropriaties about to blow up on the University of Spoiled Children. Keep your eyes on ESPN for more to break on this story. Another side bar to him coming to the Emerald City is the next meeting between Seattle & Baltimore. John Harbaugh, head coach of the Ravens is the brother of Jim Harbaugh, head coach at Stanford. After Stanford ran up the score on SC this year, not like SC ever did that, Pete C. was overheard at midfield at the end of the game berating Harbaugh saying, "What's your problem!", Harbaugh came right back at him with, "What's YOUR problem!!!". We'll see how thick the Harbaugh family blood runs next season. I love this game!

I listened to his press conference today online, and I couldn't help but take a liking to him, his enthusiasm and overall approach. Hopefully it will translate well to the pro game this time around. The deal is done so I've got no choice but to get behind him!

Re: The NFL - National Football League

Pete needs to remember, as was pointed out on ESPN this afternoon, that losing 4 or 5 games in the NFL will probably get you into the playoffs, whereas losing 4 or 5 @ USC could cost you your job.

As a Native of Louisiana, Graduate of LSU and die hard LSU fan, I can attest that Les Miles and Gary Crowton (offensive Coordinator) are the least popular people in Baton Rouge.

4 lossses is unnacceptable at LSU, unacceptable in the SEC and would not be acceptable at USC for long.

Pete will probably not do very well in the NFL.  Too laid back a personality.  Perhaps if he hires some Hell, Fire and Brimstone, Kick you in the pants assistant coaches, he may have a modicum of sucess.  Probably 8-8 first two seasons.  Maybe 10-6 after three seasons.  Maybe even get to the first round of the playoffs at some point down the road, but Highly doubtful the Seahawks will EVER win a championship under Carroll.

Sorry to make you re-live that one RF, but some of the stuff that goes on in the college ranks boggles the mind. The story down @ SC just gets better with the hiring of Lane Kiffin. I can hear Berkeley Bears lickin' their chops from my house 30 min. away. Lane and his old man, Monty who he hired after he got to Knoxville, should be brought up on grand theft charges. Apparently the Vols gave Kiffin an unprecedented 3 million to pay his assistants of which he gave his dad 1.2 mil. and on top of that Monty was givin a $300,000 bonus if he was still on the staff as of Dec. 31st. 13 days later they're in LA with all that Tenn. money. What the hell, does Tenn. bank at Fort Knox or what????? Lane better hope SC lets him hire his old man cuz that's the only way he can win games.

Actually, I think San Diego has an excellant chance of playing in Miami next month.

May be wet at Qualcom this weekend against the Jets.

Sorry for my transgression too. Just couldn't resist that post. After all, it is a football team. May have to get a pass from the doc to go to a game. lol That is certainly a hot lineup. smile

Go Chargers (forecast of 30% chance of rain means 70% chance of sunshine) Front page of the local fishwrap called for Jet fan taunting to commence at 11 AM gameday. roll

edit. Just showed it to the wife and she thinks it's pretty cool too. cool Only in America could someone come up with a Lingere Football League. (and find enough aggressive hotties to field the teams)

Re: The NFL - National Football League

Hey Rick, if I'm gonna pull for anybody left in the playoffs I'd say it's your Chargers since Norv is a hometown guy from across the river in Martinez(also the birthplace of Joe DiMaggio & the martini. The Van Gundy's lived there for awhile too.) I met Norv & his wife through his older brother Rich years ago and he's just a decent guy so why not.....GO BOLTS!!!!

Re: The NFL - National Football League

Cool. One thing for sure is they are exciting to watch. Norv has had his detractors here every time the team loses a couple in a row. The bandwagon fans are all aboard right now as one would expect. A quote from the locker room a couple of weeks ago was that this team is the best ever and that was from a vet. They have concentrated on being consistent on the road this year and it has showed.

Personally, I'm quite excited at their chances, being a fan since the old AFL days. This team has so many offensive weapons that it is impossible to stop them from scoring 20 to 30 points.  LT has not done much this year because he hasn't had to. Just the threat of him has kept defenses honest. That sets up the play action for Gates or the deep strike to our WR's. The only thing this team lacks is a good short yardage fullback and special teams consistency. If their D shows up and stops the Jets running game, the Jets are going to lose by a lot. The spread is 8 right now and those Vegas guys don't miss often.

I envision a showdown with the Vikings in Florida. Pragmatism however has taught us long time fans that this team always finds a way to lose the big ones. Every time they have a late lead and set up that "prevent defense" I shudder, and we will never forget the Holy Roller by the hated Raiders. The best team doesn't always win in the playoffs.

Just read a good article @ SI.com by Stewart Mandel, Lane Kiffin brings circus act to USC. Great closing line from recently retired Kentucky coach Rich Brooks Twitter, "What a crazy profession, I've seen it all now."
