Topic: Brand New Interview With Gregg Rolie (Santana, Journey) Online

Recently I had the wonderful opportunity to sit down and talk with legendary keyboardist/vocalist Gregg Rolie (Santana, Journey) for an exclusive, in depth interview. The topics we discussed include his years with Santana, appearing at the Woodstock Festival, the possibility of a Journey reunion with Steve Perry, a near encounter with Jimi Hendrix and much, much more.

A quick except from the interview :

NHOR : Hendrix was a big fan of the original Santana band. Did you ever meet Jimi?

GR : I have a great story about Hendrix. I never really met him, but when we went to go play Woodstock, I was in our truck, and I went swimming every day at this waterhole. I was coming back from it, in our truck, and I got behind somebody in a Corvette doing about 15 miles per hour. I couldn't believe it, and it was on a winding road in Upstate New York. I was honking my horn, and I was really angry. I went by, and looked over, and it was Hendrix. I'm honking and flipping him off, and I went, "Oh my God!" I just kept on going. I'll never forget that. I was like, "Man, he can't drive". (Laughs)

Also, if you're a fan of early Santana, I can't recommend highly enough the brand new live album from the Gregg Rolie Band 'Rain Dance'. Recorded live in 2007 at Sturgis, it's over an hour of early Santana classics such as "Black Magic Woman/Gypsy Queen", "Soul Sacrifice", "Jingo", "Evil Ways", "Oye Como Va" and many more, including two new originals, performed to perfection and fronted by the man who sang them originally.

For a taste of the album, here's "Soul Sacrifice" :

Thanks Keith for the shout about Gregg Rolie.  He was one of Santana's best vocalists and his distinctive vocal style fit early Journey perfectly.  A reunion with Steve Perry sounds exciting.

Don't hold your breath Curby, Gregg was way too candid concerning Steve Perry in that interview. If you ever see his current band, they are really good BTW, see how many Journey tunes you hear them play.

Hi J Dawg,

I promise I won't hold my breath about Steve Perry and Gregg hooking up,  but I will try to hold my temper in check.  Is that what you're refering to in your sign-off?
Regarding Gregg's band - all I've heard is what Keith provided and you're right, they sound pretty good.  I'll be keeping an eye on them.  Always thought "Soul Sacrifice" was the high point of Woodstock and I loved Gregg's organ work that memorable day.

No worries Curby, Hope You're Feelin' Better is a Santana song/lyric written by Gregg. My favorite tune Gregg wrote for Santana is Mother's Daughter. I spoke to Gregg at one of his gigs a few years back about playing any Journey tunes and he was very blunt and to the point when he told me, "Not even F*#&in' goin' there." Nuff Said?????

J Dawg,

Can you hear me giggling?  Lol!!  I don't pretend to be an expert regarding Gregg's exit from Journey and being replaced by Perry, but his hard feelings would be understandable.  One thing I've learned though is sometimes the almighty dollar makes strange bedfellows.

Lord knows you've got to change,
