Topic: Dilemma re buying a JB signature Goldtop
I have a dilemma. I have been offered a JB signature LP at a very good price. I don’t know the seller but she is not the first owner and initially said she bought it from a friend. In e-mail correspondence she now says it was owned by her uncle who bought it from the Guitar Center but that he doesn’t have the original receipt. I don’t know whether it was bought from the Guitar Center in the US or from one of the many shops in the UK calling themselves the Guitar Centre. I have sent an e-mail to the Guitar Center in the US to ask if they sold this particular model and await their response. I have also registered with trace.com and will perform a search this evening to see if it’s been reported stolen. There are other databases of stolen goods, but this one id international and looks like the best bet.
I don’t think I’m being over-cautious as, if it has been stolen, ownership remains with the person it was stolen from and I will have lost a largish sum of money.
Any thoughts on what else I can do at this stage? I have told the vendor I’ll give them an answer tomorrow.
Secondly, what should I get with the JB LP? The picture of the guitar being sold also shows the Gibson Gold warranty, the black booklet showing the limited edition serial no. of the guitar, the black case and something in a plastic bag; I’ve no idea what it is. The guitar is on a stand. Presumably, this doesn’t come with the guitar? Is there anything else that should be included? Strap?
Please don’t tell me to walk away from it. I need your advice on what else I can do to protect myself without accusing the seller of fencing stolen goods. It could be entirely genuine.
Thanks.
