Topic: It's gonna be the Trad. Gold Top

I have sold my ESP Eclipse yesterday and I got my money together now for my first real Gibson LP. Saturday will hopefully be my NGD then :-)

I have made up my mind and I think the Historic Necks are a little too big for me, I know exactly how I am and I know I would be thinking about it all the time instead of enjoying to play the instrument.

Thinking back of my big LP check, I was very very happy with the Traditional Gold Top. It was an excellent instrument with very warm sound. I have mentioned that I didn't like the binding, but that day I was a little bit under pressure, my wife was waiting with the kids etc...you know the usual blabla...taking closer looks now at pictures of owners ofthe GT Traditional I must admit this binding has balls and the guitar is a beauty.

Of course I will report on what I bought and if I bought the guitar...so please cross your fingers for me on saturday..may the Gold Top Force be with me and may the shop have 2 GTs at least so that I can chose the better one.

First mod will perhaps be a black pickguard...who the heck might have inspired me to do so *hahahahaha* ?

My fingers and toes are crossed for you Jimi.    Nothing is more exciting than buying a brand spanking new guitar and if you get that LPGT its going to be a beauty.

Good luck for Saturday.

What was it about the bindings on the Traditional that you didn't like?

Re: It's gonna be the Trad. Gold Top

Congrats bro for the first real deal!!!! smile
I hope you will be happy with it. You did totally right by listening to your stomach
and buy the traditional LP instead of the Historic.
If you dont feel 100% comfortable with the neck then you probably would sell it sooner or later.

Dont forget PIIIIIICCS!!! big_smile

Seemed pretty big on the first glance, but now I think they are cool.

Re: It's gonna be the Trad. Gold Top

Jimi,

Happy to hear you made a decision that makes you happy....best of luck on Saturday.  I changed over all the plastic on my Goldtop Traditional to black...makes her look so sweet.  Helps bring out the richness of the gold...you will love it..

I wanted to get a historic or a JBLP but couldn't put the funds together but I am very pleased with my Goldtop...someday I'll own a '59 RI or another year..but for now...I am very happy and when a guitar makes you feel like you are on cloud 9 when you are playing it, then you know you got a sweet one.  I feel like that with mine even several months after the purchase...

Enjoy...I know I can't put mine down...

Congratulations. Hopefully another member of the Gold Top club.
My R7 is the best LP I've ever played.
I'm playing her even as I type this.

Congratulations man. Nothing like getting a good new guitar, especially when it's a really nice one. The Les Paul traditionals are great, great guitars and I know you will be very happy with it. I think they are the best out of the USA line up definitely.

Just make sure to post up some pics and sound clips up when you get it!

Holy GEEZ Lester! It look much better with black trimming IMO.

Nothing beats when you get your first Gibson. They are indeed intruments you cherish, as opposed to Fender where they can "take a beating." Two different trains of thought for me.

Wow.....thats quite a startling improvement.    No wonder JB fell in love with that bashed up LPGT back in the day.    Takes on an edge with the black plastic.   Who'd have thought a few pieces of plastic could make such a difference.

I LOVE IT!!!!!

Re: It's gonna be the Trad. Gold Top

Well this thread inspired me to go play some gold tops - there is a Guitar Center less than a mile from my office, so I went on my lunch break.

I played two a 05 Classic which must have weighed over 10 pounds - I like the neck but this guitar just didn't do much for me and I usually like Classics the best.

I also played a 1983 30th Anniversity Gold Top - Great neck, killer sparkle on the top - guitar had seen better days and the controls need some work but that dog had a lot of fight left in her. Blew the classic right out of the water the sound was great, the price wasn't $2200 and I would give the guitar a 6 out of 10 in the shape but the sound was there forsure. Just goes to show you got to play a lot of them to find the good ones.

For fun I also played a PRS they keep impressing me but I feel like I could break the thing in two I like my guitars to have some meat to them.

Re: It's gonna be the Trad. Gold Top

Don't overlook a nice PRS if you come across one, they are fantastic guitars.  I almost bought a pre-lawsuit singlecut goldtop over my R8 because it had such a huge sound.  It didn't sound as much like a Les Paul as the R8 did obviously, and that was the sound I wanted.  PRS guitars are built like tanks and trust me they can take some immense beatings.  I feel safer dropping a PRS than a Gibson that's for sure.

Re: It's gonna be the Trad. Gold Top

Congrats Jimi, Gold tops are my favorite (can't really explain why) - that is why I was so excited that Joe chose a Gold top for his signature guitar.

Enjoy.. like Justin said - shopping for a Les Paul is better than Christmas

Re: It's gonna be the Trad. Gold Top

Wow everybody is going Black on Gold lately.  It's very classy looking, but I think if I did have one I'd like cream rings no pickguard, and no covers on my pickups.  Sorta give it that Duane Allman LP look.  Joe's LP is very original, you didn't see anybody doing that before him.
