Topic: Which models of Les Pauls does Joe use?

I am wondering, does Joe use any of the Gibson CS reissues (r8, r9 etc) if yes, which ones?

Thanks
/Sam

He uses his signature, a couple R9s, and I have a picture of Joe using a Rossington (found it: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v678/ … Ross.jpg).

Re: Which models of Les Pauls does Joe use?

Joe's main Les Pauls are of coarse his signature goldtops, a '58 RI with the Bigsby (thats actually the same guitar that was on his Signature Sounds DVD), a '59 RI with PAFs from an old ES335, a couple other R9s, and Joe even messed around with a 3 pickup '57 RI Les Paul Custom for a while.  I wish he would bring that guitar back and put the Bigsby on that for the Jimmy Page sig LP look.

I love the flame top on the lp with the bigsby, but if it was mine I'd give the bigsby a miss.

Re: Which models of Les Pauls does Joe use?

I always forget that the Bigsbied Les Paul is an R8, the top is crazy for what's normally a plain top!

Re: Which models of Les Pauls does Joe use?

Gibson used to put flame tops on their R8's... I think they stopped doing that in like 2002 or something.  I can't remember.

Re: Which models of Les Pauls does Joe use?

he also seems to be using an R7 lately , either that or it's his sig with white hardware can't really tell.

Re: Which models of Les Pauls does Joe use?

Yeah we've said it before but if you wanna see what that R8 looked like before the Bigsby check out the Rockplasta DVD and there it is!

Re: Which models of Les Pauls does Joe use?

Ahh, I'm so torn between the Traditional and R8 (only reason I've not decided is because I haven't had time to try an R8 YET)

Re: Which models of Les Pauls does Joe use?

No disrespect to any Traditional, Standard, or Classic LP players out there but there is a definate difference in tone, feel, and look of a Custom Shop RI guitar to it's standard counterpart.  To me the difference in price was worth it.  Now that I'm use to my guitar I feel like I'm comprimising and fighting with just about any other guitar I play.  I'll pick up a LP Standard with a rediculous flame top at Guitar Center and within 10 minutes I just stop because it makes me want to run home and play my guitar.  Tell you the truth, after I bought my R8 I think I go to the guitar store an average of about once every couple months (hey still need to buy strings!).

Re: Which models of Les Pauls does Joe use?

I don't think I'll be able to try an R8 until next Friday (I'm GASing like CRAZY so two weeks is an eternity)

In terms of feel when playing, how does the R8 differ from the traditional? (In terms of neck thickness, frets etc)?

Re: Which models of Les Pauls does Joe use?

The R7 has the most "baseball bat" type feel to it.  Great for bending but takes practice getting the speed.  The R9 is much more comfortable and thin, but for a guy with huge hands may feel a little too thin.  My R8 is a great mix for me because I have huge hands.  Now if you want the playablilty of an R9 but want to spend the money of an R8 I would consider a R0 (1960 custom shop RI).  I played one at Guitar Center when I was shopping for a Paul...wow.  That guitar played and sounded like a dream.  You can't go wrong with any really.  Oh and try and work them down as much as you can.  Believe it or not I was able to get my R8 for something like $2700 new with the CS case and everything from Sam Ash.  Times are tough and people may be able to deal with you.  Good luck man.

Re: Which models of Les Pauls does Joe use?

I can speak for the R8 too.
Mine is from 1998 and has a beautyful flametop.
It has a pretty tight bottomed sound and the 57 classic sound good with it.
What I dont like too much a thinner and high frets. No big problem though.
The graet sound compensates it.
Then I have the JBLP of course. It has a darker sound with very strong mids.
I love that one too. They sound very different but great in their own way.

Of course the best LP for you is the one who feels good and sounds good for you.
I personally would buy the R8 VOS really...

Just curious, how much did that thing run you when you bought it, and how long have you owned it?

I think an r8 or r7 is the best bang for the buck. And you can talk them down. The only difference between them and the R9 is the flame top, and a little thicker neck than the r9 (but this varies greatly). I'm not a big fan of the thinner neck, but the R0 is probably very similar the the thin neck of your classic (1960 vs r0, same feel). If you like the thin neck of your classic, go for the R0. I have no experience with the traditional, but they are not a custom shop. If you can afford it, you should go with the custom shop.

Re: Which models of Les Pauls does Joe use?

is the 59' Les Paul a reiussue or an original from that year? (like peter's/gary's guitar)

Yes it was love at first sight. Its such a lightweight of 3,6 Kg (7.9 lbs) and has a very loud accoustic tone.
She's really one of my faves. I have it only since a year now and it was 2400 euro. Not cheap but it was
in dead mint condition and sounded soo good. I had to buy.. big_smile
By the way, I had a '57 Goldtop VOS historic collection too. I thought it was the best LP ever.
I had it 4 years (built 2003) But when I played the JBLP I was kicked. Wow, it sounded so much better.
The '57 was somewhat softer sounding. Not biting as the JB. The JB has a faster tone if this makes sense to you.
I sold the '57 then to afford the JB. Haven't regret it so far. But buying gear has to get reduced soon.
We finally found a house. There is a lot of work to do and investments for the whole repair thing.
Its a big house... I'll have my own room for work and music stuff...much space there for new gear... lol

Re: Which models of Les Pauls does Joe use?

The price I will be getting has nothing to do with haggling or the list price, only thing that matters is I might be able to afford an R8 or not.

I'm getting a bit skeptical about the neck on the R8. I don't like really FAT necks. My strat has a really thin neck and so does my LP (60's) though the lp is too thin. A standard 50's neck is probably fine, I love the traditional neck but if it's any fatter I'm afraid I won't like it...

And the R9 is WAY expensive, the R0 is also more expensive than the R8. We'll see how things go...
