Topic: Last Kiss Tone

Hi guys- as you might have noticed I havent been around for a while, but I'm back! smile

Anyway I was having a listen (actually, many listens) to Last Kiss... I think this is Joe's best recorded tone here. Can anyone advise me what amp to get to get this tone? I'm thinking a Fender Blues Junior... would this work? Also, if you guys have any suggestions, please try to keep them under $800 USD.

Get an old fender bassman and blast it...that will get you there for under $800 but you'll need earplugs or a good attenuator. The blues jr will probably get very close for cheaper and quieter, but I think that tone is from the amp on 10 and maybe a tubescreamer in front. There's lots of tiny amps 1/2 to 1 watts that would get close at bedroom volumes cranked.

Do you think the Ceriatone Bassman would work also?

I didn't know you could pick up a real Bassman for that cheap, I'll have to check that one out.

I picked up an original vintage Blackface Bassman head for $300  dollars 2 years ago.  According to the GP article on the album he used a Blackface Bassman + Vibrolux with an Xotic Effects X-Blender to create an effects loop for those amps (they don't have loops).  I believe he mentioned that he had a TC SCF Chorus, DD-3 Delay, and possibly a reverb of some sort running very wet through the X-Blender and just using the blend knob on the X-Blender to add the effects to taste.

If you don't like to buy off of Ebay you can look in your area for any guitar stores that sell vintage/used gear and without fail most of them will have old blackface and silverface amps.  You will probably need an attenuator for bedroom tones but if you gig I find that the 40-50 watt rating on them to be about perfect.  For other alternatives, check out the Metro JTM45.  My father built one and we AB'ed with my Bassman...surprisingly similar!

stay away from the BLues Junior.  You will probably have more luck with a twin or bassman. I really like the Pro series fenders. They made a prosonic that was pretty nice. I've always used a pro series evil twin.  They Rock.
