There is no rule that they have to be that you could find 250k 500k, and even 1 meg.  In general mostly all gibsons have 500k but sometimes they run low in suppies and stick what they got in there, as this is very rare I bet thats what happened to you.  Switch to the 500k and you'll see a brighter sound out of that Gibson.

Pots can also vary alot.  I recently put in a 500 Ohm that measured at 750 Ohm

Re: LES PAUL 250K POTS?? HELP

Your best off going with a company like RS Guitarworks because of their strict quality control.  If it says 500 k its more then likly 515k with them, just to give you a buffer.

Re: LES PAUL 250K POTS?? HELP

OK
Changed the pots and as AD3THREE predicted the guitar
    now sounds brighter !!!
Mmmmm- I am not sure I want this, as I really loved the sound
this guitar gave me now its different!!
You know the feeling when you are used to getting a
sound then it changes although IMO that I have better
variations on sound when turning my vol/tone pots and the taper is much better on volume.

I will stick with it for now , but I cant help thinking maybe their
was a reason for 250k pots in this guitar! I once bought a
Bareknuckle stormy monday for neck position (zebra bobbins)
but it sounded dull and lifeless compared to my burstbucker pro 1,2 so swapped it back maybe the 250k pot affected the sound
so Im thinking 250k pots were installed specifically to darken this guitar, is this possible ? Mmmm

Re: LES PAUL 250K POTS?? HELP

Call me crazy, but if your pickups are hotter than 12k, I'd suggest trying a 2 meg pot. Then you can really hear the difference it makes.  I put one in my Dean ML that had some hotter DiMarzio pickups in it, and the thing became a tone monster.

You can buy different posts from http://torresengineering.com I've been buying midrange kits and pedal kits form them since the middle 90's... they're really great people.

I guess it all depends how hot you want your sound. I like to diversify my guitar tone portfolio lol
If your LP is your only axe, perhaps I'd agree to stick with 500k.

Which pickup is too bright for you?  If its the bridge I'd say try using different caps values to tame it, but if its both the easy answer is just go back to the 250k pots.

Re: LES PAUL 250K POTS?? HELP

BOTH PICKUPS ARE BRIGHT BUT IF I PUT MY TONE CONTROLS TO 7 I
GET A SIMILAR SOUND AS I DID WITH 250K POTS SO I WILL STICK WITH IT FOR NOW

I think that's what Joe would do, then if you wanted some extra bite, you have it. Some people have a wah for that. just step on it to get the treble boost.
