Topic: Musicianship?

I went to the local bucket of blood with my deaf drummer and a couple of assorted beer drinkers and hell raisers on Main Street for the Blues Jam.  I haven't been in about 20 months.  I once again remember why.

The reason for the question mark after the title is simple.  At one point (after a very long wait) I was on stage with 5 other players.  As I looked at first one, then the other, I found the only ones looking & listening was my drummer and the singer on occasion.

They all had their heads down.  WTF?  Cacophony...although later the harmonica player found me to compliment me.  I was wondering why I wasted my time.

I can tell immediately if a player is listening to his stagemates.  It occurs to me that Forums, could be similar in some situations.  But let's talk about our bands!

I had at least three guitar players ask me if I was doing the Festivals thing this summer.  Yes I said I've been playing with a really good guitar player from Lake Mary.  I won't be needing you.

I'm gonna have me a good time!  It's what I want.  Do you guys & gals have good musical relationships with your playing friends.  or your band?

Re: Musicianship?

hmm Depends on who's playing the other guitar. I'm just the dep now although I was in the band for around 15 years. One guitarist is a 'my ears are closed and I'm going to fit in as many notes as I can wherever there's a gap, with the utmost amount of distortion that this amp can muster' type player. The other uses sweet tones and has his ears open all night. They've told me that they want to lose the first guy and get me back.

Got a gig this Saturday with them and luckily for me it's with the 2nd of the two. The rest of the band are great...old friends now.

The other band I gig with are pro and there are no bad vibes there either.

People gotta listen to each other when they play........or stay at home and play with themselves....and I mean that literally!!

Re: Musicianship?

Guitarists are always oversaturated. If a guitar player is good enough he will be approached and not have problems getting into a band. Although I must say some musicians that were more talented than me really took me in once and showed me the ropes as to how bands deal with songs, solos, jams, etc. i.e. it's about more than just the guitar solo. And it's more than "painting the walls" if you get what I mean.

There's also something to be said about the jammers that look to each other and communicate. You gotta have somebody directing traffic up there.

Re: Musicianship?

Band wise its very good just now. Our keys man jumped ship about 6mths ago and to my surprise our guitarist wanted to try with a second lead player. This was a shock as he is a former pro and I just didn't figure it. He had someone in mind and so far its been a blast. A real shot in the arm new dynamic. I've christened them "Prima" and "Donna" 'cos they are really getting off on it just now. Sharing the space and really driving it on, hope it lasts!

Musically, I'm not there to compete so I'm no threat to their axe nirvana. I see my role as nurturing their ego's, keeping them lubed and explaining why and when I think they screwed up and how another piece of hardware isn't necessarily the answer.

I do love 'em though. Shame we don't have as much time as enthusiasm at the moment.

Ooops sorry Jeff, I missed that you had asked a question here. Instrument wise, I started out drumming, but you know that you are really bad drummer when people ask if you can sing hmm. I could so I did. If I can summon up sufficient air now and multitask the harmonica might get an airing. As to the band, we're only doing covers. In Germany there's no market for older guys doing their own music. At the festivals and clubs they just wanna hear stuff they know rehashed. We're covering rock with a dash I guess; Purple, Whitesnake,Thin Lizzy, Aerosmith, UFO, ZZTop, Thunder, Mellencamp, Trower and Gallagher. AC/DC are on the list but frankly, its a stretch. When its good its a lot of fun. When its bad its even funnier lol

Thats a bit like how I feel, I aint a great player but I do listen very well and take in everything that I can to learn. A lot of good musicians seem to "take me under the wing" so to speak, I havent played properly for ages due to work commitments but I recently got asked to join in with some good players who've been around the block a few times, makes you feel pretty good when good musicians are asking you to come and jam / do gigs especially when I'm so much younger than them smile or mebe they just need a kid to lift all them amps tongue

To be quiet honest I think thats how I prefer it I'd love to do my own stuff with people but if far more experienced players are gonna show me the ropes I'm more than happy to ride it out and fit a few of my own things in smile Its just so hard to find people who are interested in playing what your interested in playing these days (blues)

exactly, at this point I love being the least experienced one on stage because it forces me to elevate my game. And you usually learn a trick or three... or sometimes just stage manners.

Re: Musicianship?

Stage manners?  YES!  I like being in a relaxing situation with some seasoned performers.  It's real.  We don't paint the walls.  We sometimes don't even sing perfectly on key,  but we sell it and the groove is on!
