Crossroads,

I'll be checking out the Fullers 1845 - looks like good stuff!  My favorite beers are:
Creemore Springs (Ontario) Draft
Anchor Steam Beer Draft
Victoria Beer (Mexico)

Curby,

I don't think I've ever seen those beers here in the UK. You'll be lucky to find Fullers 1845, although it's certainly exported to the US .Fullers ESB is more common,a less strong, award winning bottled ale.

Crossroads,

I'll definitely investigate Fullers ESB if it's the less stout version.  Regarding my three, your best bet finding one would be the Anchor Steam.  Here it's sold nationwide and might be sold in the U.K.  Sadly, to enjoy the draft version you'd have to find your way to San Francisco.  I'm sure Shreddy would back me up regarding the excellence of ASB.

It's got to be Belhaven Best, brewed locally in Dunbar near Edinburgh, tis the best beer in Scotland, if not the Universe! big_smile

Re: Favorite Beer

Mmmm. Was hoping this topic would make a return at some point as I missed it last time around.

One of the things I've missed most about the UK living here is that I can't get a pint of draught Abbot Ale, which was ever a fave tipple of mine.

If I'm pushed in a Euro direction, then one must go to Belgium. Leffe Dunkel, or a thwacking 9%+ Chimay are refined drinking.

Here in Germany, despite the masses of products (and I've tried a few) I've struggled to find something thats caught the imagination. I'm working my way through several cases of Dithmarsher, which is pleasant enough but the only speciality I've found that I really like is a beer out of Kiel - Stortebecker Hansa Porter. Its quite sweet, which is not normally to my taste, but it really works with this one. Its not all about Alch content of course but this one rocks out at about 5.9% I think.

I love it to bits and its a snip with 6 half litre bottles only costing EUR 4.99. Which reminds me, my next online order is overdue....hic

Would have to say for sure it is junk. When I first went there I couldn't believe how poor it was. Oz tinnies just don't cut it. I suddenly understood why so many Australians were in Earls Court. So they could get a decent pint! To this day I am amazed how Fosters and 4 X ever went over in the UK.

The power of marketing I guess.......

When travelling up to Scotland each year, the first beer I have is always
a pint of Miller's.
Mile's better than some of the slpos we get in London.

Re: Favorite Beer

My favorite beer will be the ones I'm hoisting tonight @ the Lynyrd Skynyrd show I'm heading to shortly. Specifically those would be the 12 pack of Red Tail Ale by Mendocino Brewing & the 6 pack of Longboards by Kona Brewing I just picked up for my posse @ the grocery store. My pal Gary who will be along for the gig tonight is a home brewer and he whipped up a 2 1/2 gal. batch of stout for the occasion.

Re: Favorite Beer

Thought I'd bring this topic back up after a trip to the Surly Brewing Co. here in the Minneapolis suburbs for "Darkness Day". Surly Darkness is a Russian Imperial Stout that is brewed in limited quantities and released in October. An unbelievably rich and complex beer, it's easily one of my new favorites.

Other Surly brews that are available year-round have also become favorites of mine. CynicAle is a fabulous Belgian style farmhouse ale and Furious is a wonderful American IPA.

I'm a big fan of Founder's Breakfast Stout, a seasonal brew.  They describe it as

Re: Favorite Beer

Normally, I can't walk past a bottle of anything from Wychwood Breweries; Hobgoblin, Goliath, Beewitched, White Witch or even Dog's B*****ks.
Last time I was in the US, found a very good, locally brewed pint in a sports bar in Phoenix; great taste and no hangover.

Re: Favorite Beer

I don't drink that much beer anymore preferring my own bloody marys. However, I have been enjoying a bottle or two of "Staghorn Octoberfest" beer brewed by the New Glarus Brewing Company in New Glarus, Wisconsin. A description follows...

"100% Natural - Great Midwest barleys, the world's most expensive hops, fresh yeast from Germany, and clear Wisconsin water make our Staghorn Octoberfest "Wisconsin's Real Red." You will find absolutely no additives, preservatives, or artificial agents of any kind in this bier.

Brewed using the time honored methods and an extra slow lager to release the smooth flavor of our roasted malts. Over 1,100 lbs. of malted barley in every handcrafted batch!

Expect this bier to pour with a rich head of foam that will enhance its incredible spice bouquet. Staghorn Octoberfest combines a smooth amber body with a clean crisp finish. Be sure to hold this one up to the light of any harvest moon and enjoy "Wisconsin's Real Red."

My wife Dawn likes it a lot and she is the "real" beer drinker in the family. wink

Re: Favorite Beer

San Diego is blessed with a number of great award winning craft brewers. Sam Adams started here! Now one of the best has just announced a foray into Europe. Stone Brewing is starting a brewery in Berlin. A great move since the Germans drink more beer per capita than anyone, and deserve the best.  Watch for this label my German friends, you will be pleasantly surprised.  big_smile

Re: Favorite Beer

Headin' to Santa Rosa this evening to get a taste of the infamous Pliny The Younger brewed by Russian River Brewing. They make one batch of this prized triple India Pale Ale each year about this time and if you're lucky, you get a few glasses before the batch is gone. Many beer officianado's claim it to be one of the world's best. I'm not so sure about that, but weighing in @ 10.5% you really won't give a hoot after a few.
