Topic: Joe's show on Planet rock

Hi Folks,

Joe was in his usual bouyant mood on Tuesday's show. Here's the playlist..

Layla - Derek & The Dominoes...'The highwater mark for singing, writing and guitar playing'.

Mess Around (live) - John Mayall

Otis Taylor - Babies Don't Lie....'One of blues' brightest stars'.

Ry Cooder - Low-commotion

Eric Johnson - High Landrons....'One of the greatest guitar players in the world'.

Who's That Coming? - Rory Gallagher

Susan Tedeschi - Evidence......'One of the greatest singers of our time.....She has not put out a bad album..'

Jeff Beck - Big Block from Live at Ronnie Scott's

Peter Gabriel - Steam

Brown Sugar - ZZ Top

Half way through the show Joe announced that on his show on 24th February he will be playing the Ballad Of John Henry in its entirety. Afterwards he will talk about it and he would like people to email him and tell him what they think.

To finish, Joe once again thanked everyone who has bought tickets for the RAH and making it a sell out in 6 days. He's very excited about the show and that this year is going to be the best ever.

Thanks Joe for a great radio show smile

Wow, thanks for the news Tripsy! smile

That will be a popular show I imagine. I'd always felt Joe's show would be even better with a bit of Joe lol

Thanks for the info.  Hopefully I will have the album by that date, but will still be good to hear it all and hear him talk about it too! smile

PS Next post for me is Bonametal, I need to take time on it!!

Hi Duncan,
I have always thought that too. I have heard him open the show twice with one of his own songs....Taking the Hit and Blues Deluxe.

BTW no response necessary lol

Re: Joe's show on Planet rock

Thank you so much Tripsy!! I've really missed the Sirius show reports. I found them to be great insights into Joe. Please keep it up whenever possible!!! Wonderful set selection.   Cathy

Re: Joe's show on Planet rock

Thanks for the summary, Tripsy. Due to commuting I wasn't able to tune in until Rory was on. Nice to know what I missed! wink

I dropped Nicky Horne a mail last night about you know who and he said that Joe would be bringing in some tracks from TBOJH next Monday. As Joe mentioned has for the last two weeks he'll be in the UK promoting the album. Listen out next week on Nicky's show for these tracks and some chat with Joe. I tried to get myself an invitation to sit in the background, but to no avail. sad

Re: Joe's show on Planet rock

Planet Rock are currently having problems with their internet player. You can listen live but the replay facility is not working. Sadly I have missed a couple of Joe's shows because of this. I am not complaining about Planet Rock - it is a great Station. Just wanted to warn other forum users in case they were relying on the replay facility. Check www.planetrock.co.uk for updates, they are working on it.

Re: Joe's show on Planet rock

Here's the playlist from Joe's show on the 27th January:

Ball Peen Hammer - You Know Who!

Low Spark Of High-heeled Boys - Traffic

Bad Penny - Rory Gallagher ...'One of my blue-collar heroes.'

Children Of The Sun - Black Sabbath

Bad Love - Eric Clapton...'If you listen you can hear Phil Collins play just slightly too fast.'

Operator - Alexis Korner with Robert Plant

Shapes Of Things To Come - Gary Moore ...'Gary during his more hard rock period.'

Run To The Hills - Iron Maiden

Diaraby (I think) -  Ali Farka Toure with Ry Cooder

Joe also announced again (buttering his own bread smile ) about  his show coming up on the

24th February when he will be playing the whole of The Ballad Of John Henry.

'I'm just going to say 'Hi this is Joe Bonamassa, this is my new album - listen to it!''

Oh we will Joe, we will smile

Thanks Joe for a very interesting show, loved the Alexis Korner track!

Re: Joe's show on Planet rock

Thanks for the update Tripsy.

One correction to make, the Black Sabbath song was Children of the Sea (rather than Sun), from the live album Live Evil.

For me Joe's shows are a mixed bag. I found the 10 minute Traffic song was not really to my taste and indeed I believe Joe has played it before. I loved Maiden and Sabbath in 1992, but I'm sure there are plenty of other opportunities for these songs to be heard on Planet Rock.

This is just my opnion, but I think the show could be improved by some more songs from the last decade, particularly other blues/rock acts that don't get regular airplay in the UK.  How about a couple of songs from artists such as the following, Derek Truck Band, , Greg Koch, Albert Castiglia, Ryan McGarvey, Matt Schofield, Black Keys/Dan Auerbach, Oli Brown, Julian Sas, Aynsley Lister, Jim Suhler & Monkey Beat, etc, etc.

Joe has played some of these acts on Sirius in the past, and I know he was seeing Koch at a festival in Norway this week, so he is aware of these guys. I think these would help bring the show a little more up to date and give a little outlet to these artists.  Maybe the issue is that Planet Rock don't have copies of these recordings, any one else have a view?

Re: Joe's show on Planet rock

Thanks for the correction Duncan. I actually wrote down 'sea' but 'sun' came out...must be wishful thinking. If I'd written it today it could've come out 'snow'!!

I do agree in part with what you are saying too and I'm sure Joe would be interested in your comments.
It's interesting to hear what Joe likes and it is his show afterall but I too wasn't keen on the Traffic track and yes he has played it before. Then again he's played The Thrill Is Gone before also and I'm sure we'll hear it again too as it's his all time fave. I don't mind that though cos it's one I really like too.
You know what they say 'You can please some of the people some of the time.....'

Re: Joe's show on Planet rock

Hi Jane,
I think generally speaking Planet Rock does tend to play the more recent Joe stuff, say from You & Me onwards. Mainly I think because they have been promoting the latest cd. I have heard a few older tracks, Blues Deluxe, Walk In My Shadow, You Upset Me Baby, ANDY (studio) but they are few and far between.
Considering that Joe was voted Guitar Hero of the year by Planet Rock listeners they don't play enough of him!
Some bands/artists you hear every time you tune in, even some songs and I know exactly what you mean by how refreshing it is to hear something different. Low Spark may not have grabbed me when I first heard it but I was still interested to hear it....it all adds to a musical education:)
The good thing is if someone hears a recent track like Sloe Gin, which they play most often, and they like it then they are likely to search out Joe's other work too and with the help of the Internet that's very easy.
I agree with you Jane Joe fits the classic rock genre perfectly and he certainly does rule!

Re: Joe's show on Planet rock

I agree that songs like The Thrill Is Gone is superb and I'll always been pleased to hear it, as are many of the songs that Joe plays on the show. My suggestion however would be that rather by diversifying to 1980s metal, I'd prefer to hear some modern blues/rock acts and also Joe's take on them. For example, as he saw Greg Koch live, therefore he could play a song of his and mention what he thinks of his work, or mention he's friendly with Ryan and play a song of his that he likes.  Think about it Joe smile

Re: Joe's show on Planet rock

Thanks everyone for these posts and comments here.
About Low Sparks from Traffic....very cool that Joe played this song.  I'm a big Winwood/Traffic fan and I saw this tour back in the 70's (most memorable) and love when anyone plays this song of the radio.  (Traffic's interpretation of a jam band...)Jim Capaldi and Steve Winwood were an excellent team and I've always enjoyed Traffic's unique sound & style and the way they mixed together that uniqueness by introducing bits of other genres....yeah, big fan here.

Re: Joe's show on Planet rock

I got to tune in to today's show and I liked everything I heard. Especially having a whole hour of Joe. But why not daily? I guess beggars can't be choosers. Keep up the good work, Joe. And thanks for the TFO/Zep show closer.
