Topic: PACIFIC ROAD

Well , unbelievably good . Probably the best seat ( sorry , I was standing , hardly noticed ) in the house . You just don't get to see anyone this good & you certainly don't get close enough that you can put your hand out & shake his . Thanks for that , you made a happy man old , sorry an old man happy . Please , please ,please come back again some day Joe , but whilst I'm asking ( more like begging ) how about the guitar festival next year ? We may not be worthy , but there will always be an unquenchable thirst for the type of music you play ,especially to the unbelievably high standard to which you play it , in these parts . I have never felt more priveleged than I did last night , have been trying to think of a better gig I've been to & just can't right now .

A HUGE, HUGE THANK YOU from a guy who feels extremely humble and extremely honoured this morning

Regards to all,
                      Jeff

p.s will come back later with a set list for you folks in the U.S. when i've regained my composure & maybe some sort of review

Re: PACIFIC ROAD

Well folks , last night I witnessed the past, the present & the future of blues music & rarely has anything tasted so good ! Still experiencing the afterglow ! the feedback about the gig is unanimous & overwhelming in praise for your & our hero ( are you sure he aint British ?  ) from the cynical old b******s , such as myself to those fortunate enough to enjoy their first live blues experience last evening ( all the musicians have talked about practising harder , haha )

had intended to take up a space centre stage but the guys i was with went left so i ended up dead centre in front of joe’s amps , a stroke of luck there then . ashamed to say this is becoming quite an established venue in my home town and i’d never been there for a gig before , if they’re usually anything like this i’ll be wanting a season ticket !

after a slow start the venue began to rapidly fill & the support act went down reasonably well , but they acknowledged why we were there and told us what a treat we were in for . didn’t move from my spec all evening so can’t estimate numbers ,but certainly very close to capacity ( 600 ) , the crowd reaction sounded as if there were considerably more ! there were a few knobheads shouting out during some quieter passages , but my overwhelming memory of people’s voices were utterances of amazement & bewilderment at what they were watching & hearing.

fortunately i’d brought a camera along & was so close didn’t feel compelled to change  lens during the show ( but could have done with a bit more range , just another thing to go on the list ) . was torn between wanting to just watch the gig & taking the opportunity to try and get a couple of good shots , in the end i spent too much time watching it thru a lens & struggling with the changes of lighting - so next year a minimum of two gigs , with one camera free ! despite this , have spent much of the day wondering if i’ve ever enjoyed a gig more & in the short term i’d say no i haven’t , this was everything i’d hoped for and one hell of a lot more . the band were excellent as a unit & joe gave a stunning performance . he has technique in abundance ,but has feel in equal measure & a stage presence that i really hadn’t anticipated . there was an obvious joy & pride in the quality of their music & the reaction they were provoking from the audience , it was a privelege to witness it . you can’t fake these things , if he could he’d be an even better actor  than he is a musiciian , haha .

it was  as close to a perfect evening as  i could have imagined , i have often taken different paths away from blues with the music i’ve listened to , but always returned to listen to blues or blues rock & that was the sort of gig you have always hoped you would go to - great venue , great audience , the best possible view , fabulous sound ( so few crews get that right , so hats off to the sound guys ) & a guy on stage that seems to have gone thru your collection of music , filtered the good from the bad & played it back to you the way you’d
always wanted to hear it & to top it all off as he’s leaving the stage you offer your hand up & the guy has the trust & grace to lean down & shake you by the hand ( wow ) , don’t know how many people patted me on the back for that ! during the performance it almost seemed like the whole band , but especially joe were welcoming photographs & maintaining a position long enough to get at least a couple of shots off , if there’s any good ones will be sure to send them in .

all you guys who’ve already seen him on the tour have obviously been buying up a s**tload of merchandise as there wasn’t a whole lot on offer , so if that’s a sign of a successful tour hopefully it’ll be worth their while to hurry back soon . joe looked drained after the gig , so despite really wanting to say a few words of appreciation , thought he didn’t need some middle aged guy hassling him when it was obvious how much of a success it had been by the looks on people’s faces , there was a sort of question i had for him but it’s not like i don’t intend to go to any more gigs in the future , so maybe next time .

i promised a set list , so here goes

Re: PACIFIC ROAD

Jeff:  Based on recent setlists, the last song was most likely "Just Got Paid" originally by ZZ Top, which goes into the solo of "Dazed & Confused".  Welcome to the legions of the Bonamassa converts....it's an impossible additcion to shake, so don't even try.

Looking forward to my (approximately) 20th show coming up Halloween Night at the Ram's Head Tavern in Annapolis, and my first show was only October 2003.

Keep on rockin' the blues

Re: PACIFIC ROAD

Thanks for that . Not too up on ZZ Top i must confess , but did see a great show by them at Sheffield in the early nineties , they were an unannounced addition to a Clapton charity gig . a very good show by them , Clapton was joined on stage ( again unannounced ) for about half an hour by Joe Cocker ( a Sheffield lad ) , thought the crowd reaction was gonna blow the roof off !

Regards ,

Re: PACIFIC ROAD

Back in June on a visit to Hebden Bridge and the usual trek to the local record store there, while brwosing through the cds I heard this incredible album being played by the guy who runs the place. Bought the album and discovered this most talented blues rock guitarist and vocalist.
watched the dvd, bought a couple more cds but little did I realise how brilliant he is until Tuesday night at the Pacific Road. Without a doubt the best guitarist I have ever seen or heard. That acoustic set was mindblowing.

Why is it that real talent just doesn't get the exposure it deserves? Perhaps a slot with Jools Holland might help get some national coverage as his tv  show is the only one where different styles get a chance. Shame can't get to any more gigs on this tour
Come back soon Joe and play Bury Met next time!

Re: PACIFIC ROAD

Hi Jeff, nice write up and it good to see that the UK leg has gone so well.  I was watching on VH1 classic the other night and saw this documentary on Hendrix and how he make big in the UK before the states, says a lot for you guys!  Joe keeps on getting better and better...

Music is good for the Soul...

Re: PACIFIC ROAD

Great write up Jeff.

Unbelievable that such talent isn't a houshold name !!  (Joe I mean not ...errrr......Jeff wink).

The Jules Holland thing is a great idea - just a bit too late.
Look what it did for KT whatsername.
Maybe next time.

Re: PACIFIC ROAD

Hi Jeff
Have to agree with you, this show was just THE BEST. I've been to some great gigs this year, Jeff Beck, Satch, Lizzy, but getting that close to somebody with this much talent was awesome. Let's hope he returns, I'll be booking my ticket well in advance.

Re: PACIFIC ROAD

Joe is featuring on Paul Jones Blues Show on the 19th. Guess that will be the last time he performs in the UK before heading "home". Check out this link

Re: PACIFIC ROAD

Think that one is already ' in the can ' , but look forward to hearing it especially if there are tracks performed 'live' , whatever the content will be sure not to miss it !

Re: PACIFIC ROAD

Saw Joe at Pacific Road last Tuesday. Best live music I have ever heard!!

First saw him in Southport in February, back when he was playing much smaller venues! Since then I've bought his whole back catalogue and enjoy listening to every single track, though they're so much better LIVE AND LOUD!!

We chatted to Joe and Mark at the end of the show. Very friendly. Joe signed my CD covers for me and was impressed that we had a copy of the Bloodline CD. Can't wait for Joe to return to the UK next year.....

I tried to record the Pacific Road show, but unfortunately(???!!) it was too loud and the recording is too distorted to be able to listen to. Did anyone else out there manage to get a decent recording...video or even just audio? (if not at Pacific Road, then maybe at one of the other UK venues?) If you did maybe you could make me a copy if I provide blank DVD or CD and pay postage...Many thanks.
