Topic: Another Reunion possible - Deep Purple Mark III, with Lars Ulrich

What with the talk of reunions elsewhere, I thought this news story might be of interest. The origins came from an interview with Metallica's Lars Ulrich but have now spreaded about the web.

Mark III Deep Purple was the line up from 1974 to 1975 andf featured future Whitesnake singer David Coverdale and former Trapeze singer/bass player Glen Hughes, along with original members Richie Blackmore, Ian Paice and John Lord.  Between them they recorded the albums Burn and Stormbringer, and several live releases have followed including the 1974 Califormia Jam.  Here is a song clip of Burn from that performance:

With such a rapid rise and demise, the Deep Purple Mk III saga has always had an air of unfinished business about it.

There have constantly been rumours regarding a reunion backed up with insanely lucrative offers from promoters, especially in Japan where this particular line-up never made an appearance.

In separate interviews David Coverdale, Glenn Hughes and Jon Lord have all intimated they would be up for it, and all parties have recently been in contact with Ritchie Blackmore.

In fact the only block to the band re-forming, surprisingly enough, could be Ian Paice who as a member of the current Purple would probably find it difficult and uncomfortable to get involved.

But there is a solution in the form of Metallica’s suave sticksman, Lars Ulrich, who would be more than happy to ‘do a Grohl’ and deputise on drums for a one-off event.

A hard-core Purple fan, Ulrich was fortunate enough to see Purple Mk III at their first show, at the KB Hallen in Copenhagen in 1973.

“That was the famous gig where in a newspaper article the day after, Coverdale was talking about puking in the toilets backstage before the show, he was so fired up with nerves,” Lars recalled, laughing at the memory.

“I remember they played a lot of new songs, I was all of nine years old.”

Lars even admits to being a big fan of Stormbringer, Purple Mk III’s second and final studio album: “I think that Soldier Of Fortune and The Gypsy stand out and have aged well compared to the rest of the record.

“I hope that one day Metallica will do a version of one of those songs; James Hetfield could sing Soldier Of Fortune beautifully.”

And as for the reunion?

Ulrich: “I know there’s talk about the fact that if they got Coverdale, Hughes, Lord and Blackmore together they would have four members who aren’t in the current Deep Purple – then they just need a drummer, I’ll volunteer myself for that [laughs].

“If they need a drummer, David Coverdale has my number.”

Oh my lord... and if Ritchie balks, they can always lure his son Juergen out of that dodgy Rainbow reunion that is planned.

Silli silly sillie.....

Already been shot down by Jon Lord. Check out the latest news on the Classic Rock Magazine web site.

When I was a child I spoke as a child, But all I heard was how I should get ahead,
Now growing up it ain't anything but all This indecision with these debts and doubts
And worries hanging over my head. When I was a child I spoke as a child,
I wish I could remember what I said.

Yes, Lord has shot down the possiblity of Lars replacing Ian paice,, and rightfully so:

Jon Lord commented on the Classic Rock report by saying, "It all seems like a lot of hot air and wild speculation to me.

"I like Lars and what he has achieved with METALLICA. He's obviously always been very complimentary in his comments about DEEP PURPLE, and I love the story of his famous nine-years-old 'baptism of fire' at our '73 concert in The KB Halle in Copenhagen, but if I was asked to be involved in a 'Mark III' reunion — (which, by the way, I haven't. All I ever said was that the idea had a few good points and a few not-so-good points.) — and I indeed considered that offer, I would not be able to even imagine it without the presence of Ian Paice.

"By the way — I have NOT retired!"

Re: Another Reunion possible - Deep Purple Mark III, with Lars Ulrich

Just as some added insight on this, I brought up the question of a Mark III Purple reunion a about a year and a half ago when I talked with Glenn Hughes, and here were Glenn's thoughts on the subject :

Q :There are a lot of people who would be very interested in seeing a Mark III reunion of Deep Purple, with you, David Coverdale and Ritchie Blackmore reforming with Jon Lord and Ian Paice for either some live shows, or even perhaps some new recordings. If the circumstances were right, would you be interested in pursuing something along those lines?

GH : I think David and I would do that. Speaking on behalf of David, and David and I have already spoken about this at Christmas. I think, at some point, you might see some kind of rumblings of this in the press. While Gillan, Glover and Paice are out still out there, I don't know if it's ever going to happen. I think if that ever comes to a head, where Deep Purple kind of stops touring with the two Ians and Roger, who are very nice people by the way, it might happen. I wouldn't want to step on anybody's toes and do something that's inappropriate. But I think that if you got Ritchie Blackmore, David Coverdale, Glenn Hughes, Jon Lord and Ian Paice together, it probably would be a very big tour. I think it would be remarkable. David and I have already discussed how great it would be for he and I to sing together. But it would only be in Deep Purple. And, it would only be with Ritchie Blackmore. At my age right now, 53, things have to make sense. I don't want to do something that is wrong now. As far as wrong being perceived by the press right now. Finally, especially the British press, they're finally behind me, and they're watching very closely everything I do. I've got to kind of get things in perspective.

Q : So, you don't want to do it just for the sake of doing something...

GH : Let me just say this to you. I'm sure there'll be an extreme amount of money involved in that. But really, at the end of the day for me, I have to go to bed at night and sleep right. Being as Chad calls me an "Artiste", now that I'm an "Artiste,"(Laughs) I'm joking...But, now that I'm writing music that I think is artistic, I wouldn't want to jeopardize my current flow of writing.

Q : Have you ever seriously discussed anything like this with Ritchie?

GH : I haven't spoken with Ritchie about it. I haven't made that call, nobody has. I think he's enjoying his thing with his wife. I just think, that at the right time, and the right moment, the right place, it could happen. Is it today? I don't think it's right now. Is it next year? Who knows? But, I think it'll be in the next 2 or 3 years if it's going to happen at all.
