Topic: 6-7 December 2008 Moscow shows review

Oh boy, my first Joe Bonamassa live experience. Now I know what jaw dropping sounds like smile

I should start by saying this was the most fascinating concert venue I have ever attended. Check out these few pictures: http://www.mmdm.ru/music-halls/svetlanov/photos
Although the acoustics are not ideal for a rock show (the ceiling is too high, which generates some big echo), a good soundcheck and the right mix made it for a pleasant listening experience. The slow tunes sounded particularly stunning.

The 1,700 seater holds regular blues shows where you can purchase a subscription. This explains why there were quite a few people who were not familiar with Joe music. They simply attend all blues shows. There were some weirdos too. A guy next to me came with a guitar and three minutes into the first song he stood up and with the words "You should learn how to play" left the hall. I wish he stayed for the first solo, I guess he would never pick up his guitar ever again smile

The setlist for both nights was identical with most recent European shows. Anyone knows what guitar Joe plays on Ballad Of John Henry?  Looks like one of those Ibanez axes that John Petrucci plays. Great song that borders with hard rock territory. The definite highlights were Sloe Gin and the acoustic tracks which got the most audience response.

Needless to say Joe was in fine form. He seems not much of a talker between songs, however, the audience was treated with a few words in Russian. The second night he did a nice speech saying how fortunate he is to be able to travel around the globe, and also how honoured he is to play two consequitive nights in Moscow.

Here's to more Bonamassa shows in Russia. Maybe a rock club next time around?

I taped both shows, which came out very good. I will do my best to share them shortly.

Hi JacobK, here in Germany Joe used the actual John Petrucci Signature Model made by Sterling Balls Company "Music Man". Petruccis former Signature Guitar was made by Ibanez.

Thanks Jacob! (I was afraid we wouldn't get any reviews from Russia). You are right, a live show is mandatory for a full Joe experience. I can't explain the fella with the guitar that left. I agree...sounds like he had "issues".  I think there's a good chance Joe will be back. How was his Russian?  I hope you got that part on film! Thanks again, Cathy

Thanks for the review Jacob and good to hear that Joe learned a few words in Russian for the occasion! smile

Hey Jacob, welcome to the forum and we really appreciate your splendid review of Joe's performance in Moscow.  Jaw dropping is a familar term for all of us when seeing Joe for the first time.  That is weird about the guy with a guitar and leaving, definately a weirdo as you said.  Were the shows a sell out?

Thanks for the review Jacob....glad you enjoyed your Bonabaptism. That venue looks spectacular, I bet Rick would have loved to have had a go on that organ.( I really tried to make that not sound crude!)

Tripsy smile

The first one was definitely sold out. I think the second show was 70% filled.

Thanks for your review Jacob - it´s good to have a Russian correspondent here too! smile

I would have loved to meet the guy who stood up and said that Joe should learn to play - would have been fun to hear HIM play for sure ... lol

Youtube clip from Moscow. There is a Brett Dennen sighting at the very end carrying off Carmine's bass.

Nice video for sure, it is always interesting how music crosses the borders of nations without impartiality.  Thanks for posting the link...
