Topic: 6-7 December 2008 Moscow shows review
Oh boy, my first Joe Bonamassa live experience. Now I know what jaw dropping sounds like
I should start by saying this was the most fascinating concert venue I have ever attended. Check out these few pictures: http://www.mmdm.ru/music-halls/svetlanov/photos
Although the acoustics are not ideal for a rock show (the ceiling is too high, which generates some big echo), a good soundcheck and the right mix made it for a pleasant listening experience. The slow tunes sounded particularly stunning.
The 1,700 seater holds regular blues shows where you can purchase a subscription. This explains why there were quite a few people who were not familiar with Joe music. They simply attend all blues shows. There were some weirdos too. A guy next to me came with a guitar and three minutes into the first song he stood up and with the words "You should learn how to play" left the hall. I wish he stayed for the first solo, I guess he would never pick up his guitar ever again
The setlist for both nights was identical with most recent European shows. Anyone knows what guitar Joe plays on Ballad Of John Henry? Looks like one of those Ibanez axes that John Petrucci plays. Great song that borders with hard rock territory. The definite highlights were Sloe Gin and the acoustic tracks which got the most audience response.
Needless to say Joe was in fine form. He seems not much of a talker between songs, however, the audience was treated with a few words in Russian. The second night he did a nice speech saying how fortunate he is to be able to travel around the globe, and also how honoured he is to play two consequitive nights in Moscow.
Here's to more Bonamassa shows in Russia. Maybe a rock club next time around?
I taped both shows, which came out very good. I will do my best to share them shortly.
