We are very excited here at BluesWax to announce the ballot for this year's BluesWax Artist of the Year Award and the BluesWax Album of the Year Award. For the past month, nominations have been pouring into our office and we have had a fun time keeping track of all the nominations from you, our readers, as well as our editorial staff to complete the final five in each category. Now is the time to support your favorite Artist and Album of the Year from the nominees below. As readers of the largest subscribed publication in this genre of music, your votes mean a lot to the artists and labels represented. This is the largest award voting open to the public for this important music. Now you get to pick ONE of the nominees on each ballot.

BluesWax Artist of the Year 2008

We had many great nominees for BluesWax Blues Artist of the Year. Before we get to the final ballot we would like to recognize some of the artists who received many nominations, but not quite enough to get on the final ballot. Among those with larger numbers of nominations who didn't make your final ballot were Michael Burks, Sonny Landreth, Tommy Castro, Curtis Salgado, Irma Thomas, and Ronnie Earl. And there were countless nominees from around the world with a handful of nominations. They are all wonderful artists and we are honored to have your names submitted.

And the nominees for BluesWax Artist of the Year are (in alphabetical order):

Albert Cummings
EG Kight
Taj Mahal
Moreland & Arbuckle
Jason Ricci & New Blood

And BluesWax Album of the Year 2008!

Voting will be open until midnight, Sunday, February 1, 2009. These are some great artists who have all had a large and positive effect on the Blues in 2008. We look forward to announcing the winner of your choice for BluesWax Artist of the Year in our February 5 issue. Don't forget to vote!

BluesWax Album of the Year 2008

2008 provided a huge variety of great Blues CDs and this year's ballot reflects a nice cross-section of those releases. We would like to mention some who received many nominations, but not enough to make the final ballot. Among those were Albert Cummings' Feel So Good; Jeff Strahan's Amen To The Blues; Liz Mandeville's Red Top; Moreland & Arbuckle's 1861; and Irma Thomas' Simply Grand. All of those fine albums were close to making the ballot.

And the nominees for BluesWax Album of the Year are (in alphabetical order):

Full Tilt - Lil' Ed & the Blues Imperials

It's Hot In Here - EG Kight

Let Life Flow - Kenny Neal

Maestro - Taj Mahal

Peace, Love & BBQ - Marcia Ball

Re: Blues Wax Nominations

A year ago, the only one of these artists I'd heard of was Taj Mahal, I'd heard of Joe through!

Re: Blues Wax Nominations

Ya know what...this one doesnt bother me too much.  I don't see Tommy Castro on here and he is another Blueswax favorite.

Re: Blues Wax Nominations

Not a strong list for either category.  Think I'll vote EG Kight on her voice alone with Kenny Neal a close second.

Re: Blues Wax Nominations

Perhaps Blueswax is just trying to spread the wealth(give the others a chance). If Joe or Tommy were in either of those categories nobody else would stand a chance. I'm sure Joe will be in the mix next year after the release of John Henry, as good as LFNIP is, it's not new material. For the record I voted for Albert & Kenny, both a couple down to earth nice guys who deserve some accolades.

Re: Blues Wax Nominations

If my memory serves me right, Joe won the 2007 BluesWax Artist of the Year which was the third time he'd done so. Having Joe win it every year might be great, but then everyone else would be complaining saying how Joe must have an "in" with BluesWax. I'm confident Joe will win it many times in the future, so we might as well enjoy it when it happens and not be upset when it doesn't. After all, Tiger Woods doesn't win The Masters every year, right?

I must say though, I'm happy to see Albert Cummings on this list. Albert is one of the nicest people you'd ever want to meet, a real down to Earth person who is just as comfortable having a beer with you as he is performing his terrific music. Albert, along with Joe, had one of the greatest Live CDs that I've ever heard released this year called "Feel So Good-Live". Like Joe's CDs, there is not a bad song on the entire album and Albert, Dan and Aaron's performance is fabulous on it. This CD was recorded all the while Albert, during the previous week, had been sick in bed with a bad case of Strep Throat. Up to the day of the performance, he told me he wasn't sure he could go on, but then he said the lights and the audience's warmth hit him and he was just fine. As he said, "the music cured me". I truly hope Albert wins it this year.

Joe is the Best!

Re: Blues Wax Nominations

Should you vote if you havent heard their album?....I have Alberts, and love it, so I'll vote for him..... maybe not fair to the other nominees, but it is what it is....just thinking out loud

Hi Roy, I recently got Albert's live album and I like it too. He's pretty much unheard of this side of the Atlantic, but that could change if he tours this way. Its a little more "good time blues rock" than Joe, but a very good album nonetheless!
