Topic: Keeley mods, whats your thoughts?

hey all,
i've been a boss bd-2 user for years and recently a dd-3 user. i've been thinking of getting the keeley mods on both, plus my sd-1 thats lying around. did people find it better to get your own pedal modded or did you sell/keep your original and buy a pre-modded pedal?

i live in the uk, so sending a pedal to have the keeley mods might be difficult.

what are people thinking about the sound of the mods? i know joe uses a keeley mod dd-3, which sounds amazing in his rig. i like the thought of the high cut to make it more analogue sounding.

Re: Keeley mods, whats your thoughts?

Try the search feature this topic has been brought up in the past. Not sure if he does use the modded dd3. He has used the compressor in the studio in the past.

Re: Keeley mods, whats your thoughts?

there was an interview in guitarist magazine in april with a break down of his gear, it's lists the keeley dd-3 as his current fave. still, wether it's modded or not, it still sounds amazing with joe playing through it.

Re: Keeley mods, whats your thoughts?

I didn't know he had one. I know he had tried a Java Boost, and the Fuzz but liked the compressor best of Keeley pedals. I have a moded TS9 of Keeley's but I'm not a good judge of pedals. My guitars are wall decoration.

If the article says his DD3 is a Keeley mod than it must be.

Since Keeley is a neibor of mine I know the company to be very will to do what it takes to make you happy. Call them you never know when Robert will answer the phone. You can have them purchase the pedal here and send it modded.

Re: Keeley mods, whats your thoughts?

You won't get better service anywhere. Keeley is THE best in my opinion. The dude is a genius. Any mod he does is added value in my book.

Re: Keeley mods, whats your thoughts?

It is worth it.  It makes a really good sounding pedal GREAT!  And the work is done fast, so you aren't waiting very long.  It really added some balls to the bottom end.

"One side ( Marshall) put a DD-3 with all knobs set to 12 oclock, you may have to tweek them depending on the unit itself.. I have 6 DD-3s and they all sound a little different..Keeley makes a good version with a analog switch thats my current fav."

On the strength of that I bought the Keeley DD-3 and love it!!! I would replace it tomorrow if it broke or got 'lost'. Sounds Great in Manchester stock most of the Keeley pedals. Maybe it would be more economic to ebay your current one and pick up a new Keeley one - Just a thought.

Re: Keeley mods, whats your thoughts?

I've modded a ton of pedals over the years, some good some a waste of time.
Keeley makes good pedals but keep in mind, not only will modded and unmodded pedals sound a little different from one pedal to the next, the overall tone and benefit from the mod will differ from one amp to the next. A modded pedal that sounds great in your marshall may sound like total crap in your fender or boogie, etc.. and vice versa.
If you've got a dd-2 and dd-3 then you've got the best of both worlds because they changed the processing chip in 73 which is why the dd-3 has more of a digital sound to it, but works nicely on a number of amps because the delays stay cleaner and a little more prominent. That works well in higher gain situations.
I've found that mods work best on some overdrive pedals. On pedals like delay I just can't justify the cost when they're just changing a few values on the pedal. It won't make a digital pedal into an analog pedal regardless of what anyone tells you.

A guy named Monte Allums( I think that's how you spell it) also has mods that are basically like Keeley's and then go a step further in some cases.
Keep in mind that all these guys do basically the same thing for their mods, just substituting a value here and there.
If you're careful and decent with a low wattage soldering iron it's pretty easy to do your own mods. The schematics are everywhere and once you've done a couple you can understand exactly what those guys are doing.
I still do mods but guys like Joe prove that if you have good amps and know what you're doing mods aren't the magic formula a lot of players like to believe they are.

I love my Keeley BD-2 like crazy. I couldn't be happier with it.

Re: Keeley mods, whats your thoughts?

Keeley TS-9  - great flexible pedal.

Re: Keeley mods, whats your thoughts?

If your good at working with electronics-specifically soldering- then you can do the mods for a BD-2 yourself and save a ton on shipping to the U.S.  If not, then it might just be better to sell your current BD-2 to someone locally and buy them direct from Keeley.

In any event, a Keeley modded BD-2 will kill (literally) the stock versions.

Re: Keeley mods, whats your thoughts?

Beerdog80 is right. The BD-2 sounds much better modded and it's one of the most common mods.
If you're going to mod that pedal though I'd go for the H2O mod over the Keeley.
Both mods are done by upgrading a number of components on the board but the H2O version gives you more flexibility. I've done both to the BD-2 and much prefer the Allums mod for this particular pedal.
This is one of those day and night mods though. There's a big difference after the upgrade.

Re: Keeley mods, whats your thoughts?

I only have one Keeley modded pedal.....TS-9 with the Baked Mod....I like it much better.

The switch went out on the pedal and I emailed Robert and he said to send it to him with a $5 in the box and he put a new switch in it and mailed it back within a week.

I'd say that's pretty good service these days....just for being a customer.

The Allums mod is good too.  I've installed a few of his kits in BD-2's and they sounded great.  Really smooth. In most cases, ANY mod on this pedal will make it sound much better than stock.

Re: Keeley mods, whats your thoughts?

I've got a keeley compressor and one of his modded Ibanez analog delays and used to have a modded Ts9. All are improvements on the originals.

...but only, or course, to the ears of a guitarist.

I did an experiment once by a/b-ing the keeley ts9 with the stock reissue. My wife swore they sounded identical. After ten minutes I was almost weeping with frustration at her failure to appreciate the vast tonal superiority of the keeley mod.
