Topic: File Sharing Lawsuits at a Crossroads, After 5 Years of RIAA Litigati

From "Wired":

It was five years ago Monday the Recording Industry Association of
America began its massive litigation campaign that now includes more
than 30,000 lawsuits targeting alleged copyright scofflaws on
peer-to-peer networks.

The targets include the elderly, students, children and even the dead.
No one in the U.S. who uses Kazaa, Limewire or other file sharing
networks is immune from the RIAA's investigators, and fines under the
Copyright Act go up to $150,000 per purloined music track."

[...]

"Casey Lentz, a 21-year-old former San Francisco State student, is
among those caught in the RIAA's PR campaign. "They're harassing me
nonstop," says Lentz, who's been trying to settle her RIAA case, but
can't afford a lawyer. "I wasn't the one who downloaded the music. It
was a shared computer with my roommates and my friends. They want
$7,500 for 10 songs." "I told them I only had $500 in my bank
account. And they said 'no way,'" she says."

Disclaimer: The moderator is not a fan of the RIAA, an industry front
group for the seven or eight largest record company/conglomerates who
give tons of money to legislators (excuse me, they "lobby") and
generally act like robber barons to the detriment of musicians, small
companies, and consumers.

I know that here at Arkansas Tech, they're hitting us heavy. $750 a song downloaded. The RIAA subpoena'd the University lawyer to give up the names of the people who did it. One girl had to declare bankruptcy because she couldn't pay it. Bankruptcy at 19 years old. But you know what? Shouldn't do that. PAY YOUR ARTISTS! She apparently had a TON of illegally downloaded music. Let it be up to them if they choose to give it away. But don't take it. My main problem comes with if music is being played in a store, technically they have to pay to play it. I don't agree with that, but that's another story.

Bluezman, it appears that even after the full explanation of taping bands that we went through recently,  that your still confusing the idea that tapers are equatable with people who are taking bands professional recordings and either selling or putting them out on file sharing nets for others. Its two completely different types of activity that are in no way connected or the same.
Sharing audience recorded shows is NOT the same as selling or sharing a bands cds.
There are hundreds of bands that allow or even promote audience recording and open  trading or sharing of THOSE shows but this is NOT the same as bootlegging the bands cds and probably unknown to those who are not involved is the fact that the tapers and the taping community will often be the first to actively go after those who break the rules.

Injecting the word TAPER into your posting in a thread that deals with people being  fined for illegal downloads of music may be fun on your part but its something that needs to stop concerning the gravity of the situation concerning right and wrong, legal vs illegal.Consent and Permission being that line that differentiates between the two.

Asking you and your buddy to refrain from demonizing and attacking tapers on this forum is hardly asking or expecting anyone to "walk on eggshells"

Re: File Sharing Lawsuits at a Crossroads, After 5 Years of RIAA Litigati

And thank you Jane for a clarification of the clarification. smile Actually, I've always admired people like Bob, Steve from Appleton and Joebeacon from New York. Think of all of the great music that they have shared with many people which has helped the artists grow their fan base. I support the Tapers and think they do a great job. Heck, I've got a number of shows from them and from friends that prove it and I in turn, have shared them with friends and relatives.

Thanks Guys!

Roy

Joe is the Best!
