Topic: Music Box at Henry Fonda 8/5/08

Anyone have the setlist?  My first show by this incredible talent.  TOTALLY Blown Away!!

Re: Music Box at Henry Fonda 8/5/08

The setlist should be something close to that:

Bridge to better days
So many roads
Mountain Time
Another Kind of Love
Sloe Gin
Highwater Everywhere
Your Funeral, My Trial
Don't burn down that bridge
If Heartaches were Nickels
Woke up Dreaming
Just got paid/Dazed and Confused

One of these days
Asking around for you

Ballpeen Hammer
New Day Yesterday + Starship Trooper

How great that you had your "Bonabaptism" (that´s what we call it here... smile) and liked it so much! If you haven´t done it already, you could write an Introduction (in the "Introductions" section) so we can all get to know you and welcome you properly on the forum.

Welcome! smile

There you go Marco.
A reply by the man himself.

What other guitar genius would take the time to do this ??  smile

Spike Driver Blues...

Read Caveman's latest entry.

This must be the song from the new studio album he's referring to.

Re: Music Box at Henry Fonda 8/5/08

I had read much about JB and enjoyed his lessons in Guitar mags before seeing him live for the first time at the Doheny Blues Festival recently. Joe was amazing and I came to accept my jaw being constantly agape watching him play.

So, I invited four friends to the show last night at the Music Box in Hollywood. Yes, four jaded Hollywood types (two guitar players) not really aware of JB. They were floored. I don't honestly know how Joe has the strength to respond to any emails today given the energy expended last night.

Here are some immediate impressions:

Prodigious chops, great guitar tone and variety, excellent acoustic interludes, Joe's hallmark phrasing, awesome set list, and yes, even the use of a theramin.

This venue as opposed to the Doheny Festival really showcased Joe's vocals which resonated beautifully in the audience at this venue

Great and memorable show! Thank you Joe.

Hope to see you again soon

And surely after last night many more Angelinos will "know your name".

Nice review gtrgeezer.  It is really fun to watch people hearing and seeing Joe for the first time.

Re: Music Box at Henry Fonda 8/5/08

Hmm...a new song to kick off the show, I really was hoping on such...the gig in the foothills of Calif sat at Sonora will be incredible.....I love "woke up dreaming" right after "blues deluxe"....if there is one person sitting after that, then they must be passed out...then again, the weather should be at least 100 degrees.... the gig kicks off at 11 am...Joe and the boys go on at 8:30, the people should be primed by then wink...Joe is doing a guitar workshop at 2pm, think I'll drop by, brought some things for the boys to munch on

Shred and JDawgs excellent adventure!!

Re: Music Box at Henry Fonda 8/5/08

Two things. 1) I can't even wait to hear a song called Spike Driver Blues, and 2) I'd love to hear what Joe considers to be a "botched bridge."

I remember Joe saying that his work title for the new record was something about "John Henry".  I think you'll hear a reference to that in Spike Driver Blues.  "John Henry was a Steel Driving Man..."

This video is sung by John Hurt.  I love the way he tells his story.

I can only imagine how Joe has reinvented this song.  I can't wait to hear it played live.

Just 7 more weeks until the TEXAS shows.  Can't wait...  big_smile

Another vote for Blues Deluxe at the Cleveland HOB show and a vote to have Back Door Slam open.

Re: Music Box at Henry Fonda 8/5/08

Okay, believe it or not, I'm gonna make this quick....... well, by MY standards anyway.  LOL.

First of all, THANK YOU JOE, for another great show AND for posting the set list.  Secondly, a very WARM welcome to our new members Marco and Gtrgeezer.  Thank you for your posts, and your ENTHUSIASTIC participation.  We hope you will enjoy your time HERE and at MORE shows in the future.

Okay, so, I JUST got back into town from a few days in Hollywood and we leave again this afternoon for the show at the Coach House - so, I'm a little busy...... BUT.........  I just HAVE TO SAY, that the show at the MUSIC BOX was FANTASTIC.  I was escorted by two very special friends who were there, at my invitation, to see Joe perform LIVE for the FIRST TIME.  They, of course, agreed with me - 'TWAS GREAT!!!  I have NO IDEA what Joe is talking about with the botched bridge...... BUT, I CAN tell you that I LITERALLY almost KEELED OVER WITH ANTICIPATION AND EXCITEMENT when I heard the first THREE NOTES of BLUES DELUXE....... Good God!!!!  It was INCREDIBLE to have it back in the lineup - UNBELIEVABLY FABULOUS.  Please, please, PLEASE keep it in there for a while JOE!!!!

As far as the new song is concerned - it was GREAT!!!  I'm sorry Cathy (and everyone else) - I KNOW that you want more details - but, it was SO exciting and UNEXPECTED - especially as the OPENER - that it took me off guard....... I SO WISH that I could share video of it with you - but, the venue was NOT video friendly AND, I still haven't figured out exactly how to upload to youtube....... perhaps, I should do that for y'all tonight....... whatchoo think???

The venue - the Music Box at the Henry Fonda Theater, was really nice - GEORGE and all of our European friends would have LOVED it because it is STAND UP with a few low couches running along the sides of the theater.  I began watching from the bar in the back of the theater - over the soundboard - and a bit elevated - and then swooped in for a closer look.  I ended up on the far left corner of the stage where Joe spent half the evening.  As I discovered when I finally left my picture taking post and returned to the bar area - it was about 20 degrees hotter at the stage - I'm NOT sure WHO was dripping more - Joe, or yours truly.  I must have shed a pound or two dancing and sweatin' and shootin' in my little corner.  smile  WHAT fun!!!

The crowd was a little different - a little more ...... Hollywood ....... (of COURSE!!!)......  A little younger........ slick.......well-heeled.  A few very special guests.  Joe was teasing the audience a little - mentioning that he used to live right up the street and "Where were all of you guys when I LIVED right HERE???!!!"  He went on to mention that he has indeed moved to Athens, Georgia.

Oh, by the way, no one has mentioned it, but, Crosby Loggins opened for Joe.  It was a short set - about 1/2 hour.  He looked and sounded great - had Paul Cartwright with him and two other band members whose names I didn't catch.  I wonder if he'll be there tonight too???  It was interesting to see him on stage after following the MTV show this spring - I was watching for changes......  he seemed much the same to me - true to himself, but, perhaps was a little more "on", if that makes sense.  If he's there tonight, and I have the opportunity, I will ask him how the whole experience was.

So, bottom line, Joe, Carmine, Rick and Bogie did yet another incredible job of bringing some SERIOUS blues/rock into our lives on a HOT summer night in Hollywood.  I was completely pumped by the WHOLE experience, and hardly able to sleep that night.  It's so GREAT that there were so many NEW fans there that night....... I can FEEL the fan base growing exponentially - like a tidal wave.  WOW.

Blissfully Blue,

smile  Libby

I know that Joe could play one of those kid's guitars with the plastic strings and make it sound good-
