Topic: Just a wee bit of shadow...

I consider this vein of the forum to be the guitar forum now, so here goes.

I was changing my strings today and I checked to see if I had any pickguard/poker chip shadow going yet. To my surprise there was a tiny bit of color difference! Underneath the pickguard and poker chip the color of the finish was slightly more orange while the rest of the outter tear drop had taken a more red/brown color, depending on the lighting. So I took a few pictures. Enjoy

Oh and I apologized for the sub par photography

Seriously, no comments? I know the photography is horrible but come on, 23 views and no one has anything to say? Weak

Well i'll get started. It really does look beautiful to me. When I decide to take the plunge and get a new guitar... it'll be a nice shiny Les Paul. I wanted a Deluxe Player's Strat until i saw Joe in concert. Now I want an LP!! Sorry a little off topic

Re: Just a wee bit of shadow...

Haha no, none at all. Don't worry about it, I was just looking for a little more feedback from people! I'll blame it on the crappy photography.

It really is a shame you can't post actual pictures on here...someone turn the IMG tag back on!

Re: Just a wee bit of shadow...

Nice Standard.  The fade is to be expected depending on what kind of light it gets but won't be anywhere near the older versions (50's - 60's) or even new versions with less plasticizers in the lacquer.

Here's a couple of mine, an R8 & R0:

The R8 on the right had a top only refinish done by Dave Johnson.  It's true staight nitrocellulose lacquer with no additives - its already started to fade in just six months and thats with normal playing and keeping it cased when not.  If I exposed it to any real light on a regular basis it would fade out quick.

If you really want to fade out yours expose to it flourescent lights or the sun daily for a few weeks.

Check out Dave's website and look at the gallery and finishing section for an idea of where this can go.  He also runs Historic Makeovers:

Re: Just a wee bit of shadow...

Yeah, I don't expect to have a Lemon Burst in 10 years. Now a Tea Burst in maybe 15/20? That's pretty likely at this rate. Like you said though the nitro isn't the same on standard production Gibsons. The idea of a tag shadow is impossible. I've gotten my Standard out in the sun a couple times this summer, mostly when I'm just lounging around the house and can keep an eye on it. I've been doing it when I change strings about every 2 weeks. I put painting tape on the fret board to let the inlays alone get some sun, trying to get them more white. If they turn darker in the process that's just ok.

Why'd you have Dave refinish the top on your R8?

heh...should've known I would find you lurking at the LPF too wink

The explanation to the the above is in glorious color in this thread:

I'm speed monkey over there...(what's in a name???)

I think you'll agree the color it was when it got to me was fugly at best.  Suffice to say my buddy just about cried when I got it back from Dave.  You wouldn't believe some of the stuff going on in that shop.  He's just over an hour up the road from me, very cool to be able to cruise on up there when needed.  Nicest guy in the World as well.

Re: Just a wee bit of shadow...

Wow...recovery refin is right! And I would have expected nothing less from Dave, it looks great.

Ha very cool. With that kind of convenience you have no excuse (other than $$$) to have ANY disagreeably refinished-by-a-shitty-luthier guitars. Which makes me think, what if you lived next door to Tom Murphy???

Re: Just a wee bit of shadow...

Last time I was up there he had two Murphy's that were sent to him for refinishing...Dave is the new Murphy wink

Re: Just a wee bit of shadow...

Huh no kidding! Does Dave do relic jobs as well?

Nice pics guys. We're due to take a Gibson delivery soon at the store and I think there's some VOS coming in. I fancy treating myself to a new toy smile

Yeah man, unreal stuff.....Dave is "Historic Makeovers"

http://historicmakeovers.com/

Put it this way, there was a real worn 59' hanging on the wall next to one of his makeovers and without being told which was which I was having a hard time determining what was the actual 59' - the Makeovers are that good.

Geoff - enjoy some new VOS goodness coming your way wink

Re: Just a wee bit of shadow...

Oh man, right, you already said that tongue I've seen some good things come out of Historic Makeover on the LPF...I could never afford it but I do love looking at those pictures....
