Topic: Liverpool - City of Culture 2008
Quite frankly one of the best gigs I've been to and that's not "local" hype. Not quite to the Newcastle level, but then again Newcastle was the last date of a pretty big UK tour and the hall was one of the best stand up halls in the country!
The day started well for Eva and her mum Angela, they went off for a Magical Mystery Tour of Beatles land and we all hooked up later in the day - Lyn, Laurence, Matt, Colin, Michael, Eva, Angela, Sue and myself - in the Lord Nelson next to the venue.
The boys had off loaded the trailer and were setting up the stage. We bumped into Carmine and Rick and had a brief chat, then later in the afternoon met Joe and Bogie, who took us all into the hall to watch them sound check - Security were a bit miffed because we didn't have the passes, but hey "We were with the Band" - Always wanted to say that!!!!
What an insight! Joe has a vision on stage that few get to see and we saw that yesterday afternoon. The way he hears music and chords, harmonies and different keys, getting Rick and Carmine to "blend" with his sound - true dedication to the artform! After taking some pictures - quite a lot really, some of which I'll post when I have more time, we took our leave and headed back to the Lord Nelson to say hello to Tripsy, Libby, Nightfly and others from the forum - great to see so many there!! Then out to the queue at 5.30 - Guess who was at the front - Sue, with butties for us all!
Into the gig we poured, first problem, no photopass, but some heavy blagging and promises that I would bring it back to the door once I had picked it up off Jay, got me in with my camera - no sign of Jay, but that was no surprise as Stone Soul River were due to open again for Joe last night. We all settled on the front row and had a right good natter to those around us.
SSR came on and gave us their hard rocking opening set, which was of course unbaffled, pretty loud I have to say, but they went down well with the 1200 capacity house. Layout was pretty good with all standing on the main floor, with a small balcony at the back where some people were sitting at the front with video camera - any chance you could download some clips to You Tube guys!
The lights go down and a new sleaker, mean and lithesome Joe sneaks round the back of the stage to hoots of approval. Dave is readying Joe's first Gibson. Joe's new girlfriend settles herself in the darkness at his side stage left - nice touch that! The backing track hums into life creating an atmospheric rumble, which lifts the crowd, the "click" triggers Bogie into action and "Bridge to Better days" is our first number - Joe had arrived in Liverpool for the first time - big time, receiving a tumultuous welcome!
I'll leave it to Lyn, who picked up a set list, to detail the running order, but suffice to say it was similar to the set earlier in the year, but with some really different twists on "Don't burn down that Bridge" and "Your funeral my Trial", which we haven't heard here in the UK before (except Cornbury) The welcome Joe got from the Liverpool crowd, which included visitors from Germany and Ireland and all over the UK, was tremendous.
After the gig, we chatted to Carmine for about twenty minutes in the street, then to Joe, who was as gracious as ever, chatting to everyone and posing for photographs, what a really nice guy he is!! Meeting and greeting the fans is done in a way that is something special for all who meet Joe and everyone leaves with a warm feeling about a guy that makes time for his fans. Thanks Joe! and Thanks for signing Sue's shirt and for playing "Asking Around for You" it means something special to her! And thanks for visiting Liverpool Joe. Seriously - check out the Empire Theatre if you must, but if you are doing the Sage in Gateshead in November, you should seriously think about playing the Liverpool Philharmonic Hall, where the acoustics are amongst the best in the land.
