That's true, heavier gauge strings are easier to play when you top wrap, which Joe does on all his Pauls. I've been top wrapping for....at least 2 years now. Been using 11's since before I could remember. Just on the topic of strings, I tried Snakeoils last year, those strings are PHENOMENAL. Lasted for 6 months, and I play at least a good 2 hours a day.

A quick thought: $50 says any strat player today who uses 13's was trying emulate Mr. Vaughan.

Anybody wanna see a goldtop tele? Got her last week from local Luthier in Fairbanks.   It was kinda a bad deal whole way around, the guy didn't know alot about putting wood together I figure, was supposed to be a natural finish, but had to do a goldtop when I saw what he was doing. Anyway, turned out pretty good, fantastic neck built from scratch. Body was American Chestnut almost 200 years old from hand hewn beam I had sawed up. Has very middy sound, nice jazz guitar.  Curt Novak handwounds, stk teles, A5's.

First pict is how luthier put bds together, why I could go with natural.

Now the finished product, goldtop

Ron,
Did you get the chestnut strat back from Ron Kirn yet? I need to see pics of the finished product.

Ken

I should be getting that strat sometime late July I figure.  I'll tell ya what, Kirn is a good guy; wish I had heard about him sooner.  Here's the first strat body he did for me, the plug is from where there was a wooden peg in beam, I wanted it there actually.  (back after Revolutionary War, it was cost prohibitive to haul iron nails over mountains, no roads, so they used wood pegs everywhere they could).

Then I talked to Ron KIrn and he mentioned about rear mounting everything so there would not be a pickguard.  So he is sending me this first body for me to try a build and making another to rear mount gear.  Haven't seen pict for that one yet.

Here is the beginnings of my first LP Kirn also has in the works; probably get her this fall sometime.  I'm figuring P-90's but open for suggestions???  What pups would you all use for first LP?

Ken, you can't go wrong with Ron KIrn;  he is sure fulfilling my chestnut guitar gassin.

Dig the GT Tele, I'm not sure how I feel about the rosewood Gibson style fret board though...

For your first Paul just go with stock BB Pros. If you're pretty wealthy (which I'm assuming you are since you're having a Paul made for you) you can experiment swapping pickups according to your taste in tone. Now if you're REALLY loaded you can spring for some PAFs on the Bay. Nothing, and I mean absolutely nothing beats genuine PAF pickups (in my opinion, but I'm into the music that does PAFs well). Just ask Joe.

Edit: IMG tags don't work on the forum, they're turned off, so just give direct links to the pictures.

Music, Do you mean post HTML tag that is above IMG tag on Photobucket?   Thanks.

I'll look into BB pros.  I've only ever played teles & strats; ignorant about 335's & LP's.  If you ever seen Drew ZIng's 335 on Boz Scaggs new dvd; I think it's tobacco finish; man I'd like to get of those.   I Have lollar's, fralins, SD's, novaks, ect all single coils on my fenders; they all have their own sound; need to get up to speed on Gibson pups.

WE live in a real dry climate, be a desert if it wasn't for 7-8 foot snow we get in winter.  I play fiddle some and had one dry right out in a couple months, so kinda leary of hollow body guitar; never no probs with fenders.

I got on this chestnut kick last year, have a trkload of the wood in the shed; hauled it up here 20 years back when we left back east, planned on using it for something; so be it geetars.   ONce I get a few built, I'll lay off I tell the wifey.  No joke, they all have their own sound, never enough and they all make us feel good.

Didn't mean to come off, about new guitars; I like looking at all my buddies in Anchorage guitars. They get super deals on C.L. , one friend has some sweet Arias, like a custom shop job for 300 bucks.  Japanese build good guitars too you know.

Not even close to wealthy, wish I was though; then I'd really start livin buy high end stuff, ha ha.  Have to get a plan together to get there. Wifey & I have our teaching degrees; I drive a 1990 pickup with 60 gran original miles, 300 six, 21 mpg;;; regular antique.  Heat with wood, grow big garden, eat alot of salmon, moose, and caribou.  When you live isolated, no wheres to piss it away, live cheap in some ways.   Cars, guns, guitars, it's all good stuff; guess I just need a new guitar about every six months and I got the wife convinced of it, ha. Hey thanks for the  info on LP pups.

Les Paul pickups...there's lot's of guy's with lots of models out there doing nice LP pickups, Fralin even has a PAF model. Here's a few links, I've got BB1 and BB2s in my historic, but I wouldn't mind trying some of these. A lot of historic LP owners are switching out their BurstBuckers for some of these and seem to think it's an improvement.

P-90s have more of a single coil sound. IMHO-I say for a first Les Paul, you gotta do humbuckers if you want the classic Les Paul sound.

I don't think the HTML tags work either, because I've never seen an actual picture on the forum, but lemme try...

<a href="http://smg.photobucket.com/albums/v678/V3Iv3tR3v0Iv3r/Les%20Paul%20Porn/?action=view&current=IMG_2888.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v678/V3Iv3tR3v0Iv3r/Les%20Paul%20Porn/IMG_2888.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>

...nope. I'm guessing they've got the IMG tag turned off to reduce bandwidth.

Wolfetone Pickups are pretty popular as far as PAF repro's. Here's a website...there's actually a waiting list to get them.

http://www.wolfetone.com/

+1 on the Fralins though. Never played through them but I've heard a lot of good about them.

Re: I laughed when I read this from AMS

Appreciate all the input on LP pickups.  For my first one, I guess have to be humbuckers like mentioned above.   I'm going to check out all the sites and give a listen.  Ya know, I have these cd's from Seymour Duncan,   going to dig out the humbucker one and then get an idea of what I'm looking at.

With my single coils, the amp often makes them sound better or worse.  Like Lollar Blonds sound great thru a TRRI but S.D. Surfers beat the pants off everything thru my Cowtipper.

Is it about the same with humbuckers?

Out here where we live, mostly everybody has strats & teles & a few epiphones.   The Indians all have accoustics or teles.  I don't get much a chance to sit down for a few hours and play good guitars when I go to stores in Anchorage & Fairbanks, 600 miles away. Too much good gear, not enough time to get real perspective, intimidated. For that reason, most used guitars I get my hands on come from friends who scoop them up off Craigs List for a song; and they pass on 20 for everyone they buy too.  I'm lucky to have one buddy who goes thru guitars like some people buy, sell, and trade guns.  I keep in touch with him every couple weeks just to keep abreast what he's losing interest in, ha ha; remind him I want it when he does wanna sell her.

Anyway, thanks everybody for the advice.
