Here's the thing I found... My first Les Paul was a 1972 or '73 and the neck is pretty skinny. I got it when I was 13 and I had no problems fretting a full F chord. With new ones, I think neck thickness are realative - just have to play enough till you find a size you like. I've got this Explorer from '79 and I swear it's the most comfortable shape and size neck I've ever had, low action - neck straight as an arrow...just really comfortbale. The Explorer is stamped second!
For my taste and money, I find the used ones seem to play better than the new ones. Probably a big reason JB decided to give his sig. Les Paul a broken in feel. I think there's something to be said about guitars that don't have that 'showroom' shine and those hard edges that come with a neck thats not all broken in...
