Topic: Should I spend ....

.... 75 Euros to see Eric Clapton in Munich in August ?

I have never seen him play live, so I think it´s about time I go and see him when he´s playing so near my hometown - but 75 Euros is a lot of money for a seat where I probably won´t be able to see too much of Mr.Clapton wink.
That´s nearly the price of 3 Joe shows (front row!) ....

I´m sure someone saw him not too long ago - so I would be thankful for some advice ! smile

We saw him at RAH in 2006 - he was amazing - we were about 25 rows back but that did not spoil it for us - lets face it you don't necessarily go to "see" Eric - but more to hear him don't you - he's great live!

Derek trucks played with him that night - he's an amazing guitarist

Re: Should I spend ....

Eva,
GO see Clapton, honestly, he seems to be in a certain comfort zone right now and playing very well and with such joy and emotion! You just don't know what the future holds and how much longer he may tour, that's why you really can't afford to wait...IMO they are certain artists that one needs to see at least once! I passed up seeing Clapton a few weeks ago at a smaller venue since the tickets were $500 (four times the price at face value) for the best seats as opposed to $125 when I saw him last year with the Derek Trucks line-up w/Robert Cray as a warm-up. (big venue)

These are some reviews from the show sent in by fans and one from the newspaper of the current concert tour.

I can help you scheme a creative way to get the $$$ for the tickets...borrow on a future present part of the ticket price, like a birthday or Christmas present...maybe your Dad would have a soft spot for that, being your mutual love of music! wink  I'll even make you an offer you can't refuse, if you are disappointed in Clapton's performance, I'll refund you your ticket price. big_smile  Go see Clapton Eva!!!!!

I saw E.C. in 1998 for the Pilgrim tour, when "Father's Eyes" was the single...and I was unimpressed. Way too soft. Nothing like the Crossroads DVD. I'm sure he'll be better than he was 10 years ago...

Re: Should I spend ....

There is a price point that I won't exceed, no matter who the artist, venue, sports team, etc.
That price point is different for every fan and usually varies based on the artist.
We have reached a point (at least with the superstars) where the average person either cannot afford it or is stretching significantly to be able to afford to attend a show.
Although I've reached a point in my life where spending $150 or $200 on a ticket doesn't hurt so much, I refuse to do so. I just don't see the value and feel like a line has to be drawn somewhere. Ticket prices will continue to spiral as long as people are willing to pay the price.
Eva- 75 Euros to see EC?....At a minimum, I'd want to know where my seats were before making a decision.

By Email Gzz JDawg you get all the fun:) Big venues are all ways a tough sell for me Just don't get the full effect at them I just saw Santana at a 1000 seat venue after seeing him at an arena show a few years ago there is no comparison however who knows when that will ever happen again so i say see him why you can.

Eva,

I'll be honest, I wouldn't pay to see Eric play live. I actually won some tickets when he was on tour to support his "One More Car, One More Rider" CD. I bought the CD after the show just to preserve the memory and yet, I almost never play that CD.

Is Clapton a great player? Yes, but he's fallen into what so many artists do and that is, his setlist is the same over and over. You'll hear "Cocaine", "Layla", "Badge" and maybe "Sunshine of Your Love". To be honest with you, I'd rather save the money and if you really want to hear Eric, buy a CD.

Here's one other example. Clapton and Kenny "Babyface" Edmonds won a Grammy for the song "Change the World". It's a good song, but not a great song. I saw Clapton perform it and it was ho-hum. But then, I saw Babyface appear as a special guest performer at a John Mellencamp show. During his brief set he said he'd like to do this song that he and Eric did. Except he said, he does it a bit differently. OMG!! What a terrific version of that song! I'll be honest, it was ten times better than the original.

So I say, save your money young Uni attending lady.

Roy

His setlist is the same over and over?????? Should Joe drop Mountain Time from the setlist? (please include photo as you ponder that notion or inject head exploding scene from Scanners). Why shouldn't Eric play what the fans want to hear? C'mon brotha', why do we go to live gigs anyway?

Re: Should I spend ....

So the answer is... a difference of option. I guess you'd get that pretty much for every artist on here - except Joe of course.

Personally I would be interested if he was to play the really early stuff like Cream, Blind Faith, Derek etc and a selection of the blues tunes he's recorded over the years. If he's playing stuff like After Midnight, Lay Down Sally, Wonderful Tonight etc, I'd really have to give it a miss.

He does play Hyde Park in London on a bill with Sheryl Crowe, John Mayer and Joe's label mate Scott Mckeon in June. It will be interesting to hear people's reviews on that one. I guess Eva, you'll have to decide before that time though.

Re: Should I spend ....

Hi Eva,

Eric Clapton was recently in Tampa with Robert Randolph opening for him and we passed.  If Derek Trucks had been playing with him, we may have reconsidered. But, first, let me say that I love Eric Clapton and I know he's a tremendous talent. But....
I'll jump in here and tell you what I do.  If I listen to an artist's music regularly,  then I'll go see them, providing the total price of the ticket doesn't exceed around 50 U.S. dollars.  And, the only very large venus I attend are festivals because that is where you really get your money's worth.   Large arenas?  I don't care who's playing, I'm probably not going to fight the crowd to sit in the nose bleed section.  I wanted to see the Foo Fighters recently at the Orlando Arena, but passed.

Ask yourself, do you like listening to Eric Clapton's music?  If you do, then you should probably go.  I'm sure you'll have a good time.  But if you're like me, Unless the ticket price is reasonable, I'll save my money to see the guys and gals that I really like listening to.

And Dear JDawg, I hear what you're saying about playing what the crowd wants to hear.  I just saw Jonny Lang on Saturday and if he had not played "Lie To Me", I may have been a little disappointed.  But, Eric has been playing for so long, and I've heard his hit songs a million times and know the words to them all.  I just can't get excited about them so much any more. hmm

That just my 2 cents.

Re: Should I spend ....

Here's an example of a recent Clapton setlist from this tour:

01. Tell The Truth
02. Key To The Highway
03. Hoochie Coochie Man
04. Little Wing
05. Outside Woman Blues
06. Double Trouble
07. Don't Knock My Love
08. Let's Talk It Over
09. Rockin' Chair
10. Motherless Child
11. Travelling Riverside Blues
12. Running On Faith
13. Motherless Children
14. Little Queen of Spades
15. Wonderful Tonight
16. Layla

Encore:
17. I've Got My Mojo Working

Yeah, go see him. I would kill to see him. Well, not really. Clapton is the s***, regardless. I honestly can't see why anyone wouldn't want to see him right now. Besides Layla and Wonderful Tonight, which of his songs from this set have been played to death on the radio? Little Wing maybe, but his version is so different from Hendrix's.

Re: Should I spend ....

C'mon Roy this is no swipe at you or anything personal we are on the same team. My point is Mtn. Time is your favorite Joe song and I'm sure you'd want to hear him play at least that song whenever you see him live, right? I see Skynyrd every year and they change it up a little bit, but what would their show be w/o Sweet Home Alabama and of course Freebird. To be honest, unless I'm with somebody who wants to hear Freebird I more times than not beat the crowd out of the venue before they end it. Steve Miller's another case in point, as I mentioned in that thread my neighbor's girlfriend was disappointed with the blues part of his show at the Fillmore the same night I was there, all she wanted was the top 40 hits. You know lots of these acts that have been around for decades survive on that mentality. The average concert goer is there for that reason. Some of us are just a little more refined in our tastes as evident by just being here on this forum. Are you OK with that?, or is it Monday rubbin'you the wrong way?

Re: Should I spend ....

There is absolutely no point in comparing ticket prices for BDS in a tiny US venue (or Joe for that matter) with prices that are currently 'normal' for mega stars at large venues in Europe. It is what it is.

Eva, you've never seen EC live before, you owe it to yourself to go!

Re: Should I spend ....

Clapton is a bidness man.  He'll get what he can.

I'd be quicker to go see him if I knew he was gonna play 75 - 90 minutes of real blues.  I don't care about any of his hit stuff.  If I can hear it on the radio it doesn't belong on the stage or on the tour.  IMO not even humble.

I go see Joe twice.  Same set is fine.  I don't hear it on the radio.  BFTB plays a gig.  Nothing you ordinarily hear on the radio AND the chickees dance.  SGOOD.

There's the purist coming out just a little.  No wonder I don't have any friends. lol

Re: Should I spend ....

Eva liebling,

For me, it's simple.  Life is short.  I want to live without regrets - and I want you to do the same.  It's ERIC CLAPTON, Eva.  I don't care WHAT is on his current set list, or WHO he currently has supporting him, or HOW bad your seats may be.  You just have to go.

Truth is, none of us knows what tomorrow will bring and when and under what circumstances Eric might stop touring.  I am SO HAPPY that we have discovered the GREAT JOY that LIVE MUSIC can bring to our lives in these recent years.  BUT..... there were MANY years, that we simply MISSED.  Now, the only thing that continues to HAUNT me about our rather late arrival to the exciting life of following a calendar that is THICK and RICH with incredible, gifted performers, is the nagging occasional thought of WHO and WHAT we DID miss, during our years of hibernation.  I do realize that it is NOT possible for any of us to see EVERY ONE of the greats.  In other words, if I'd been alive to see Robert Johnson play, then I would probably not have lived to see Joe.  But, if you HAVE the opportunity, and you are CAPABLE of making it happen, then, in my humble opinion, you OWE it TO YOURSELF (literally) to MAKE it HAPPEN.

No regrets Liebling, no regrets.

Re: Should I spend ....

Hey Eva

You've got to go so you can say you've been there, done that, got the t-shirt lol

BTW he does have some really cool merch - plenty of girlie T's for sure - I think I even saw a pink one at the show I went to - but me being a non-girlie girl went for the black with orange motif - plus pink would clash with my red hair lol

However that brings another point - if you go its not just the price of the ticket, its also having the money for the merch

I went to see satriani and Paul Gilbert play recently and the tickets were "reasonably priced" but the merch was like £20 for a T-shirt / long-sleeved T's were £25, CD's etc were like £15, hell the picks were like £3.

This is where the gigs start to get expensive - now we all know that we'd pay a lot to get girlie T's at a Joe show, but thats another matter entirely................. big_smile

Ahhh girlie Ts!  They have no effect on me whatsoever.

Eva, Libby's right.  Don't do anything you'll regret...whatever that may be.  I once skipped a show that I thought i wanted to see, but I didn't WANT to spend the money.  SO me no go.  Me no have regrets in that particular case.
