Re: Phil Collins Announces 'Retirement From Music Industry'

I used to be a big fan of Phil's and Genesis back in the 80's & early 90's. Being a left-handed drummer, he was always a "hero" of mine in the musical sense!! If I remember right, I think Clapton once said that Phil was the loudest drummer he ever heard, which was something I aspired to, and he still has a great singing voice.

I now play the guitar though (using the term "play" very loosely), and I have a new musical "hero" who inspires me....and that is why I am here.

While I still enjoy some of his stuff, I've grown to kinda dislike him as a person. I don't really like his politics, and after his Disney work I lost all respect for him musically!!!!

Having said that, "Turn it on again" still remains one of my favourite songs of all time. He'll be back I'm sure....the little tax-dodger he is!!!! smile

Yep Jane!  I have lots of favorites myself and goes back to the vanilla vs. chocolate theory...personal preference!

If anyone is interested, Joe made some comments about Behind the Sun on the "Cup of Joe" show, has played the same fav song a few times "Same Old Blues" and commented on mixing the blues with a little pop. (go back through the sirius thread) I was thinking after I read this thread, between this and the Guitarist/producer thread, Joe will be adding this song to his setlist. smile

well to his credit, Joe merely said that Behind the Sun was one of his favorite cd's of Claptons. reminds me when i say how much i love So Its Like That and people try to explain to me why it might not be Joe's best or even represent Joe the best. well, that doesn't have anything to do with it being one of my favorites.

also good to hear Joe being concious of that whole setting a level of success for one's self. i know he knows all that but its reassuring to hear it every so often smile

Re: Phil Collins Announces 'Retirement From Music Industry'

There's several reasons why Phil Collins isn't liked in the UK.

Firstly he's part of the British music establishment. Artists like he, Elton John etc get too much attention and it deflects from the attention newer acts should receive.

Secondly he's made some poor career choices, and done some dreadful cover version ie You Can't Hurry Love

He's politics is controversial - once publicly stating he would leave the UK if Labour won the general election - as he did not wish to pay taxes

While he has a distinctive voice - if you don't like it it can sound pretty annoying

and

he vainly hides his bald patch on his album covers which show nothing above his forehead!

I've no doubt he has recorded some good songs in his time, but I think I would be unlikely to search for them.

Re: Phil Collins Announces 'Retirement From Music Industry'

There is a thread on the Clapton site about Phil Collins being in the American Idol Band just last week!??  Someone pasted in a photo of Phil playing the trumpet and Willie Weeks was playing bass.  I never followed Genesis much after Peter Gabriel left, I'm not even sure why, it could of been the songs they played on the radio or they just fell off my music radar. The equal opportunity abuser, South Park, according to my sons (warning-sick humor) did an especially funny show on Phil Collins about his Grammy and carrying it everywhere.   I do often wonder if stars tune in to how South Park and other shows make fun of them or do they just get hardened to all that.

Re: Phil Collins Announces 'Retirement From Music Industry'

This is relayed from Clapton's site.  This diehard and extremely knowledgeable fan had some interesting input to a negative Phil post.

"Phil Collins sold out...glad to see him retire."

Ande from Finland
"Yeps, that's perhaps true, but while comdemning musicians for "selling out" I think we should remember, that many people feel the same way about our Eric.
There's lots of Bluesbreakers', Cream and Derek & Dominos fans, who think the guitarist who played the furious versions of Steppin' Out or Crossroads on those live Cream gigs, can't be the same person singing middle of the road ditties like Wonderful Tonight, Promises, Change The World, Blue Eyes Blue, Three Little Girls etc. And these songs are not produced by Phil Collins.

Behind The Sun is a great album IMO, although Clapton's record company refused to release the first version, because it wasn't commercial enough. This is the point, where Clapton admits selling out and letting WB producers (not Phil Collins) to intervene and finish the album with few more "commercial" songs. Clapton was afraid, that Warner Brothers would ditch his contract and he would end up playing pubs instead of giant arenas.

I tend to believe, that the goal of every musician is to be popular and succeesful. Both Clapton and Collins have achived that goal in a triumphant way."

I never knew about the first version of Behind The Sun.  Record Companies have long been cruel and relentless.  (remember what happen to Prince) I remember in disbelief when I read Bonnie Raitt  had been dropped by her record label, (she had lots of albums with Warner Brothers) then Capitol Records picked her up and she won all those grammys with the first two CD's on the new label....Bonnie might have said Sweet Forgiveness, but its also a case of SWEET revenge! wink IMO

I'm one of those people! I love Eric stuff with Cream, John Mayall, Derek & Dominos  and even The Yardbirds, but the only records I have post that period are From The Cradle - his album of blues covers and Mr Johnson - his album of Robert Johnson covers.

Each to their own though. He's had far more success with the albums and songs I don't have in my collection!

With apologies to the Phil Collins topic, here is a gem that everyone who particularly loves early Eric will enjoy - listen out for the introductions at around 4'20 .

I hope Phil doesn't mind taking a break from the topic. big_smile What is it about those ladies named Bonnie... talented ladies...
and just in case some of the newbies didn't know that Joe collaborated with Bonnie of Delaney and Bonnie, go down to 2005.
"Sue’s Chicago Blues" (Bonnie Bramlett & Joe Bonamassa) - strong bluesy solo track in the middle of an unusual but enjoyable project, with spoken links between the tracks by Al Jarreau.  The album includes a variety of musical styles in celebration of the story of Sue, the most intact Tyrannosaurus Rex ever, and her 5th birthday at The Field Museum, Chicago.

Wow Angela, I had NO idea Bonnie Bramlett had appeared with SO MANY other performers over such a long period. The track you refer to is not on youtube, so we need to find someone who actually has it.

Same thing happened with Santana.

Re: Phil Collins Announces 'Retirement From Music Industry'

George,
I didn't realize how long Bonnie's list was, but was thinking about session musicians and the like last night when I listened to the Steve Winwood and the Blues interview on Sirius.  Steve played on Howlin'Wolf, B.B. King recordings etc., but when the dj asked hm about Muddy Waters, Steve said he couldn't remember what songs, he'd have to look into it!!!  Steve's going to be 60 in a few days and he's been at it since he was a young teen so, I can see how it would hard to recall.

Back to Bonnie B. and Joe, that song is available on itunes towards the bottom of the list, if anyone wants to listen/purchase, Bonnie's voice is killer...:)

Vince- I looked at that photo again, it was definitely Phil playing trumpet!

Re: Phil Collins Announces 'Retirement From Music Industry'

On our resent visit to Italy, his music was everywhere! In our long taxi ride from the airport to our hotel by the Vatican, our driver was listing to Phil's greatest hits CD. While visiting other places where people would have music playing while at work, Phil would often be heard!  Not all music must be cutting edge and different to be enjoyed. There is something to be said for "regular" fun music!
