Re: Earthday

Talking about this subject.
When I was Joshua Tree National Park last week.
You could see the smog from L.A. hanging over a big part of the park. You could see it when you were on a hill.Very sad.Thinking about the plants and animals that live there.
And believe me it was a huge cloud of smog.

I was on the BOD of our local recycling center prior to the county developing a curbside program. Another reason caps are removed is that when the bottles are crushed the caps are blown off with a dangerous force. I also want to remind people that letting bottled water become the accepted norm is bad! Why should it be normal to not drink tap water. Forget oil...water will be the commodity of the future. And, you can't live without it. Final note..complete the cycle. Buy goods made from recycled materials. Cathy

Re: Earthday

Eva, we do have some glass bottled waters here, but there are usually imports from Europe and cost way too much. The fancier the packaging, the pricier the product. I usually buy my drinking water in 2.5 gallon containers that fit on the shelf in my fridge with a spout to fill a glass or reuseable container to take with me. Do a little research with your local water utility company (in the US) and find out how much flouride and chlorine etc. they put in your tap and see what levels of schmootz they deem allowable, you know like how many parts per million of rat hair candy and food manufacturers are allowed to get away with according to the FDA. Hey Roy, I'm sure you remember how many people died in Milwaukee from the tap water epidemic years ago. That's no come down on Milwaukee, a disaster like that could happen anywhere. I don't mean to sound like chicken little, but when your life is turned upside down by cancer it really makes you wonder.

It looks like some of you would be interested in this article in Time Magazine-April 7th- "The Clean Energy Myth"...talks about how corn-based ethanol as alternative to oil is actually driving up food prices and making global warming worse....Yikes!  And the new issue out now is How To Win the War on Global Warming.

Eva-the energy efficient bulbs last forever, but I just read this article about how problematic it is if they break, they contain mercury...I'm not sure if all of these bulbs are made the same, but if this kind breaks you need to leave the room for a while and then there are specific guidelines for cleaning it up.

WHAT??!!!  That freaks me out Angela.  Leave the room for a while?  How long of a while?  Like - until after the HAZMAT team leaves (Eva - that's short for Hazardous Materials)???!!  Do tell Angela.
