Re: My summer just went down the crapper
Hi Bill. I'm glad to hear that your surgery went well. You will have suffered the worst and things can only get better now.
Hope you have a speedy recovery....Tripsy

Sending all good thoughts and prayers to you Bill for a speedy recovery (those BDS tickets might help lift your spirits too).
If it makes you feel any better, a friend of a friend just had a little rollerblading accident and ended up with a broken wrist and a broken elbow (two different arms). She had to fly out of state so that her family can look after her for six weeks as she cannot brush her own teeth or do ANYTHING else she would normally handle herself.
NO PAIN and SPEEDY HEALING FOR BILL!!!!

Great news Bill.
Looks like the worst is over, hope it goes on like this.
Wish you the best my friend!

six weeks in a sling, and 6 months of rehab.
This might sound like lip service...but dude - do the freaking rehab like your life depends on it. The rehab is going to flat out suck. It's going to be painful to get back your range of motion again. But if you don't, you probably wont be able to fish or golf again. Think about ' how bad you want to do those things again when you're rehabbing.
My mom had the same thing and she got lazy with her rehab. She still has problems putting on undergarments, and/or scratching her back...she can only raise her hand up so high.

Ditto on this. Glad to hear it went well. Take your rest and don't start doing stuff just because you feel better. I know two people at work who recently had this surgery. One took the full six weeks off, did the full course of PT and has great range of motion. The other came back to work after two weeks and isn't ready for PT because it's not healing well.

Everyone I've talked to that's had this done says the same thing: Make sure you hit the rehab hard and diligently.
I am going to listen to every bit of that advice. In fact, I started some minor rehab already. The doc has me bending at the waist, dangling my arm and doing small circular motions. That hurts a bit, but not as bad as I expected.
Once again, thanks for everyone's input and kind words.
Bill absolutetly do the rehab, I have a brother in law that had what he called the toughest thing he has ever gone through. He feel asleep at the wheel driving home from work in Iowa, he rolled his car with his left arm dangling out the open window. The injuries were horrible, the docs thought they might have to amputate. Dislocated shoulder, multiple fractures, screws , plates, frankenstein stiches, 3 surgeries!! To make a long story short he was back to work in ONLY a year, they called it a small miracle. The rehab was so bad he felt like quitting or worse, being a man of deep faith and a drive to succeed, he did what the docs thought was nearly impossible. He just recently went back to work, has nearly all his motion back, and is pain free!
Got another quick story about wanting "to get back to normal"...it has to do with me. I went through a plate glass window at age 12, I had a large piece of glass nearly cut my skinny little left arm in half. All my tendons were severed with a gash on my forearm. The docs operated for 12 hours to repair it as best they could. The docs told my mom that I might never be able to open my hand completely. I was sent home and told to sqeeze a rubber hand ball as often as possible to strengthen my hand and fingers. I have limited range to this day, but the docs were so surprised that I did exactly what they said x 10!! I wanted to play baseball so bad, I made myself do it.
You want to hear a funny story. Years back I picked up an acoustic guitar at a pawn shop, and decided i was going to take lessons from a friend of mine. Another long story short, I gave the guitar to my brother, my middle and ring fingers must be partially sewn together at the repaired tendons. They both move at the same time, my buddy says..." dude, you might want to get an electric and learn to "slide", you got some messed up fingers and motion. I've been living with for 38 years and just kind of forgot that my left hand is far from normal
Best of luck Bill....Dave

Bill I went through some minor rehab on my shoulder last year and did some exorcizes that circular motion was one of them.My situation was not nearly severe as yours. The rehab did work ,it took awhile but it eventually started to get better. So hang in there, the hardest part is starting.
Hey Bill,
OBEY your doctor
OBEY your physical therapist...listen to some good tunes to motivate your repetitions...:)
AND
You will return to being yourself!!!
Consider reading your wife's copy of The Pillars of the Earth to escape reality! I'd loan you some of my trashy romance novels, but you might not be willing to stoop that low to escape reality...
Good luck with everything, I hope your daughter's foot is getting better, my daughter is having hand surgery on Friday, I'm a nervous wreck! What's going on around here....Everything Is Broken!!!

Angela,
I'm sorry to hear your daughter is having surgery. It's funny when you have children, that you worry more about things happening to them than you do about yourself.
If I could have, I would have traded places with my daughter to save her the trauma of what she's been through. The good news is that her last surgery (Achilles stretch about 5 weeks ago) seems to have been very successful. She is in rehab and can tell that she's getting more range of motion and a reduction in the arthritic pain as a result. She believes within a year that she will be walking almost normal again.
I hope that your daughter's hand surgery goes well on Friday. I know it's hard to do, but try not to worry...I'm sure everything will be fine.
Thanks for the advice regarding rehab...I will certainly be diligent about it.
Also, I already read "Pillars" (You're right, that William is a @#*&%), so I guess I'll need to find some other escape.
