Topic: Earthday

Hope everybody took time today to reflect on how our lives impact our beautiful planet. I hope Kurt Vonnegut was wrong when he said we are a plague that must be removed from the planet....Clean air, water and food for all...PEACE....Cathy

Re: Earthday

I'm with you, Cathy. I don't remember if this was ever posted before but there's going to be a concert on 7-7-07 to raise awareness about global warming:

Re: Earthday

Thanks for bringing that up Cathy.  I did think about it, rather guiltfully, because I've slacked on my habits since having kids.  Unfortunately time and convenience often take over when we're so busy.  We were at a city park that day and ended up retrieving trash that other people had left all over. We really do need a joint effort from everyone to change long-held habits.  Teaching an outdoors summer school class this year, so hopefully I can instill some nature-appreciation in those little people!

It makes me sick when I see people littering. The way I see it, what else can't that person be trusted with?

Re: Earthday

Atta Boy George!!! That's the whole idea. For a start how many of you are still using old conventional light bulbs? If every person in the U.S. were to replace just one bulb in their house it would be like taking 800,000 cars off the highway. Every time one of your old energy hog bulbs burn out, PLEASE, replace it with an energy efficient one. I got a couple for free from PG&E a few months ago as a promotion on their part. Check with your local utility for freebies or rebate programs. If they have nothing to offer ask them why the HELL not?

Re: Earthday

I had no idea this is tomorrow.  Figures, I need to drive into the city...I'd cancel but it's for medical reasons, damn.

We DO have all of the energy efficient bulbs, have had them for awhile.

I agree with the littering too, I'm on a fairly busy road and have to pick up trash thrown onto my property by people driving by...gets me SO angry.

Re: Earthday

Coupla years back, while visiting my brothers at the Condo Beachside on Hoity Toity Island, (you know, over the bridge where the palefaces have put up fences and high rises) the youger drunker staggers into the kitchen and bellers at the top of his lungs, "One of you blankety blanks wanna tell me why you can't throw cans and bottles in the blankey blank garbage?"

I explained to him very sweetly that where the beautiful people live, and are one with the earth, we recycle, at a bare minimum, cans, bottles and newspaper.

He got this shocked look on his old jowly, red mug and said,  "Good answer Jeffery.  We don't recycle on Hoity Toity Island..."

"Just a high price ghetto." said I.  My other brother and sister almost wet their pants and all the kids ran and hid their faces upstairs and closed the doors, after he invited me to participate in one particlar impossible act.

Since I have some free time on my hands this week, I'm studying to become a LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Accredited Professional.
The building industry is focused on the "greening" of the US and LEED building certification is becoming more and more commonplace.
Here's a link to the US Green Building Council for anyone that's interested: http://www.usgbc.org/
There's lots of great information and ideas here.

Re: Earthday

I know this may not seem like much, but it adds up to alot ...
About a year ago I got so tired of cleaning up the styrofoam coffee cups out of my truck one day, I bought a refillable mug from the deli I stop at in the morning... (for my other cup of Joe). Got me to thinking about how many cups I would have thrown out since then had I not changed to the refillable one. Every little bit helps.

Happy Earth Day!

I am proud to say that my mother's father was one of the founders of Keep America Beautiful, an organization born in 1953, as a direct result of excessive litter piling up on the then new Interstate Highways of our beautiful land.  Specifically, the goal of the organization was to "reduce the visual blight of litter on the landscape by creating a national anti-litter ethic through public education and advertising."  This is where the expression (and campaign) "Don't Be A Litterbug" originated.  You can imagine how I feel when I see someone litter.

That being said, I will be the first to admit that there are many things that I remain unaware of in my own "green consciousness"......and I was just thinking last week that I'd like to open a "Tips for Becoming More Green" thread.  For instance, how many of you know that if you throw a plastic bottle into your recycling bin with the lid screwed on, it will, in all likelihood, be THROWN AWAY.  Apparently, the materials that lids are made from are generally NOT recyclable, and so, the workers at recycling facilities TOSS the whole bottle, rather than take the time to unscrew and separate the lids.  I don't drink out of plastic bottles, so, this generally isn't an issue in my house, but, I'll bet that most people are unaware of this problem and would be horrified to think of all the bottles that have ended up in our landfills, despite their best intentions and efforts.

It all begins with EDUCATION - don't you think?  I am positive that I can learn A LOT from my forum friends on this subject.  Please tell me how you all feel about me starting such a thread.......does it appeal to you?  I think that every little bit helps.  I think my grandfather is nodding at me, right now..................or Cathy, or J Dawg, would you like to start such a thread?

Re: Earthday

Libby, if you don't drink out of plastic bottles, where in the world do you get your drinking water? I only drink bottled spring water and they all come in some type of plastic containers. By law if the label says "spring" water it has to come from a natural source unlike the ones labeled drinking water which is just filtered tap water. The taste is noticeable. I wasn't aware of the bottle cap deal, but for some reason I never put the top back on, thank God.

One of the worst things about me John, is that I don't drink water (much).  The little I do drink is from the tap.  Actually, our water, here in the desert, is pretty tasty (as far as WATER goes).  I know, I know, it's really BAD of me to NOT drink it more often........I'm afraid that's not the only way I don't take care of myself properly..........I'll try to change my evil ways.  Anyway, I wasn't making a judgement or anything about plastic bottles, I just happen to have more CANS and GLASS BOTTLES to recycle in my house.  I'm happy that I was able to teach YOU, the Master of all things green, something new.  I'm also glad that you'll be able to sleep peacefully knowing that YOUR plastic bottles have made it safely thru the recycling process!

Re: Earthday

Water is a good regimen to get into. I wish I could get mine in glass containers, but it's just too cost prohibitive these days. It's really a necessity to me now as my salivary glands don't work at full capacity since the radiation. Lay off the tap water, you never know what's in it, unless you know a lab tech you can trust.

Re: Earthday

You don´t have water in glass bottles??? Strange, these Americans ... wink

Honestly, it takes very little to take the small steps like using the energy efficient light bulbs, recycle cans and bottles etc. and getting your bycycle out instead of driving 500 meters by car ... if everyone just did these things it would help for sure.
But I think that a great part of our society has "lost contact" with nature completely and is just too lazy about worrying what happens to the stuff they trash for example ... so I agree with Libby that education is the first step - but who wants to listen?!
It´s just too easy to ignore what you don´t want to know - especially if you live in a big city and don´t see all the beauty of nature you´re destroying with your behaviour every day.
I guess dear "Forrest witch" Cathy will agree ....

She certainly will Eva, and so do I!! There was a topic some months ago where we started discussing all sorts of 'green' issues and tips for being more energy conscious - anyone remember what it was?

(Your dvd is here Eva, I'll be watching tonight, thanks!) cool
