Happy Earth Day!
I am proud to say that my mother's father was one of the founders of Keep America Beautiful, an organization born in 1953, as a direct result of excessive litter piling up on the then new Interstate Highways of our beautiful land. Specifically, the goal of the organization was to "reduce the visual blight of litter on the landscape by creating a national anti-litter ethic through public education and advertising." This is where the expression (and campaign) "Don't Be A Litterbug" originated. You can imagine how I feel when I see someone litter.
That being said, I will be the first to admit that there are many things that I remain unaware of in my own "green consciousness"......and I was just thinking last week that I'd like to open a "Tips for Becoming More Green" thread. For instance, how many of you know that if you throw a plastic bottle into your recycling bin with the lid screwed on, it will, in all likelihood, be THROWN AWAY. Apparently, the materials that lids are made from are generally NOT recyclable, and so, the workers at recycling facilities TOSS the whole bottle, rather than take the time to unscrew and separate the lids. I don't drink out of plastic bottles, so, this generally isn't an issue in my house, but, I'll bet that most people are unaware of this problem and would be horrified to think of all the bottles that have ended up in our landfills, despite their best intentions and efforts.
It all begins with EDUCATION - don't you think? I am positive that I can learn A LOT from my forum friends on this subject. Please tell me how you all feel about me starting such a thread.......does it appeal to you? I think that every little bit helps. I think my grandfather is nodding at me, right now..................or Cathy, or J Dawg, would you like to start such a thread?
