Topic: Virtual World - SecondLife - Live music!

I work at a university that teaches some courses in a virtual world. This "SecondLife" looks like a 3D video game. It's a free download, and the program connects to the web. There's around 3 million people using it, and the square mileage of the virtual world (VW) is approx. 5 times the size of Washington DC.

that said, you make an avatar - and you can buy clothes, guitars, costumes, whatever, even rent an apartment. You can test drive Nissan concept cars, go to NPR's island - lots of big corporations have SL exposure. You can fly, build buidlings, cars, or anything you can think of. Youtube has a video of someone making a guitar for Suzanne Vega in SL. I guess she was the first major recording artist to perform in SL.

I found blues clubs that have live music. Musicians create avatars so they can play live music in front of their computer and 'stream' it into SL. The musicians even get paid in Linden dollars (that can get transferred into $US, but 2400 lindens only equals around $8 US). But it is great for exposure, or maybe using test audiences for prototype songs. You can also tell them to go to your Real World (RL) website or myspace page for more info on the artist.  It's very cool. When I was at a blues venue, I knew it was live because I was text chatting with the musician between songs it she was replying via audio.

So I went to a guitar shop in SecondLife and checked out the guitars. they come with 'guitar moves' to so when you play it you're avatar is not just standing there. It's really neat. But you can build your own guitar too!

Most people sum up SL as "everything you can do in RL, plus a whole lot more."

I was thinking we could use this for spreading Joe's name around more. People all over the world use this. I was talking to people from Australia a couple days ago.

just a thought
