Topic: RIP Sean Costello 4/16/79-4/15/08

"Blues singer/guitarist Sean Costello was found today dead in his
hotel room in Atlanta, Georgia. He would have been 29 tomorrow. Cause
of death is not known at present but details will posted on the
Piedmont Talent website as they are revealed. Sean had recently
released his
fourth CD, _We Can Get Together_ on the Delta Groove Record Label, and
was a featured guitarist on the acclaimed new Nappy Brown CD _Long
Time Coming_ on Blind Pig Records. A handsome young man with amazing
guitar ability, a fine voice, and a strong sense of carrying forward
the tradition of the blues, Sean was a rising star with a brilliant
career in front of him. In a world where we sorrowfully watch so many
elder statesman of the blues pass, the loss this youthful bright light
is especially hard to take. Rest in peace, Sean"

Shocked and saddened!!! I pray it wasn't because of something "stupid". He has really appeared to be riding the wave.... Another example of the fragility of life and the need to live a conscious life every single day. My sympathies to his family and friends.   Cathy

There's news going around claiming Sean OD'd, and someone claiming to have heard it "from a friend of the family" that this was the case posted on my site to that effect as well. I hope it isn't true, but given his age, something isn't right...

I'm very shocked and saddened. I first saw Sean at the Bayfront Blues Festival in Duluth, MN in 2005, about 10 days before I first saw Joe. Great, great guitarist and a very soulful singer. I hadn't seen him since and I was really looking forward to his scheduled return to the Bayfront this year.

if this is true...its quite a shame. thats one thing i cant understand...why more people (especially young blues musicians) don't learn from the mistakes and pitfalls of our elders...why weren't their well documented trials and tribulations with addiction and other vices not enough to make the big picture crystal clear? Kenny Wayne Shepherd for instance was known in his early days as the heir to Stevie Ray's throne, but for some reason felt he had to follow in the exact footsteps of his idol by going through his own battle with addiciton...thankfully he managed to pull out of it ok, but apparently thats not always the case...this seems to be a step in the ladder that Joe went right over...you don't have to live the blues to be able to play them...

Well, the fact of the matter is, most musicians, at least successful ones, are disposed to having addictive personalities in the first place. It's what enables one to be able to focus on their art and give it 100%. Some are able to completely manifest it through their music, many others aren't. And, the temptations are certainly out there in this business. Being on the road is anything but fun and games, and it can get pretty monotonous when one isn't on stage playing. It's easy to want to crave that "high" one gets while onstage when off. Many strive to capture that through drink or drugs or other means, and there are plenty out there who are more than willing to give it to a musician in the spirit of friendship or whatnot. How many for example, contributed to the late, great Rory Gallagher's demise by buying him rounds after a show? Well meaning perhaps, but still, every one helped build to the condition which ultimately killed him. It's certainly no bed of roses, and some can come through relatively unscathed while many others succumb. It's the nature of the business. Couple this fact with the mindset of most who are in their 20's that they're invincible and you often end up with lethal results.

i agree 100%. Being a young musician myself, I have seen alot of crazy things go on around me, but i guess at the same time i've seen alot of my friends and my mentors just deteriorate throughout the years because of a monkey they just couldn't shake, and how quickly and easily their lives just fell apart...and I can't even imagine ever going through that. seems to be more than enough of a reason to take the road less traveled.

like the lesson Albert King once gave to Stevie Ray when he was at the peak of his using... "I like to drink a little when i'm at home...but the road or a gig ain't the time to get high"

Sean Costello - April 16, 1979 to April 15, 2008

Remembering Sean Costello:

Sean Costello was a person I was so looking forward to get to know better. He exuded positive energy every time I was with him. I cherished the opportunity to work with him over the coming years and being a part of his growth as an artist and as a person. Man, his latest cd was his best ever. The tone he coaxed out of that guitar was incredible. Every song had that Sean Costello stamp on it. "Any Time You Want" or "Hard Luck Woman" can easily be the song of the year! His guitar along with voice was never better than it has been recently. I got to see him about a month ago in Atlanta and he was firing on all cylinders despite having just finished a long grueling tour and having a new bassist that night. He was producing some of his best work ever. It just kept you longing for whatever he would do next. I will miss Sean and his youthful exuberance. His energy inspired me.  He left us a great musical legacy.

I will miss Sean Costello very much.   Not only was he my client, he was my friend.  He was someone I always looked forward to seeing and talking to.  His talents impressed me and his personality uplifted me.  His smile was etched in my brain. 
How sad that this tragedy has happened and how wonderful that so many did know who he was.   

I am honored to have known him.  I am honored to have had the opportunity to work with such an amazing talent.

well until recently when I finally find a Stevie Wonder bio, every time I traveled I'd read Caught in the Crossfire, the Stevie Ray Vaughan biography...I must have read that book 150 times cover to cover over the last few years. That quote was talked about in detail in the chapters pertaining to his drug/alcohol years...
