Topic: Point Blank

Does anybody remember these guys?

The first couple of Bill Ham produced "Point Blank" albums were some of the steamiest heaviest southern slabs to ever grace vinyl.....

Geez been listening to these guys since the mid-70ies and the whole while Rusty Burns was playing lefty on a righty strung geetar( a la Albert King, Coco Montoya or Doyle Bramhall Jr.)??? As the great Johnny Carson would say " I did not know that!"

Maybe Rusty and Buddy can be the Walter / Coco combination for John Mayall next time out.....

Great band. I'm especially fond of the 'Airplay' album. Guitarist Kim Davis at one time was in the Austin, Texas band Blackbird with Stevie Ray Vaughan. Stevie split when Bill Ham (who was actually the scourge of guitarists in the Austin area during the 70's, signing all the hot players to contracts, then not letting them record, such as Eric Johnson and even SRV. Somewhat as damage control to what he was doing with ZZ Top, Ham eliminated the competition) when Ham wanted to feature Stevie and Davis in a dueling guitar, Allman Brothers type band.

I had a great time hanging around with these guys during the 'Airplay' tour...what I can remember that is. wink

Another Ham signee was the great Van Wilks, who opened up for Point Blank on that tour. If you've never checked out Van, you owe it to yourself to seek out his albums. http://www.vanwilks.com/

Re: Point Blank

Well, well.  You learn something new, everyday.  At least I do - especially here on this great forum where anyone is likely to serve up a big ol' platter of musical history at any given moment.  We, the undereducated, just have to be here, ready and willing to take it all in.  So, call me a sponge.....I'll be the teacher's pet.....teach me!!!

I'd never heard of Point Blank, but, after clicking on the video (before reading the remainder of the post), I saw someone familiar and thought, "Well.....THAT looks like Buddy Whittington!!  We just saw him with John Mayall in the fall!"  AND we'll see them again three weeks from TONIGHT!  So, I'll bone up on my Whittington history before then.....and be grateful to you gentlemen in the meantime.

One recurring theme in my education seems to be that, in this business, like in many others, it does all get a little incestuous, doesn't it?  The connections should cease to surprise me at some point, but, not as of yet.  That's the nice part about being somewhat naive.  Lovely things to marvel at around every corner.

I know that Joe could play one of those kid's guitars with the plastic strings and make it sound good-
