Sorry to hear about your shoulder. Look at it this way, it could be worse. It could be surgery on your ears, not allowing you to take in any Joe shows this summer. Hopefully Patty and I will be able to catch up with you this summer at a show. Your non surgery arm should be able to hold the beer, eh? lol

I've never drank left handed before. I guess I should start practicing.

Left handed 12 oz curls on top of pain meds...who needs a canoe?  or even a river?

Re: My summer just went down the crapper

Second opinion is in...not too different than the first. Surgery set for April 18th.
The second doctor was much more thorough with his information:
Relatively small tear...won't heal on it's own.  I could wait and try to strengthen the surrounding muscles, but if it's not surgically repaired, it runs the risk of becoming a larger tear as time goes on.
He's had people that opted out of the surgery and came back two years later in much worse condition and the surgery/recover gets quite a bit harder due to the larger tear and the deteriorated condition of the tendons (he said "fresh" tears heal much better).
He'll review the labrum once he's in there and decide whether it warrants repair. He said this (the torn labrum) could be an old baseball injury that wasn't bothering me. I do remember "throwing my arm out" about 6 years ago...I forgot I was old and didn't warm up before gametime.
So, I decided to suck it up, have the surgery, do the rehab and put this whole thing in the rearview mirror.

Cervical?  eneah...(waves hand to indicate waffling.)  Lumbar?  nope.  All the so called experts told me 10 years ago after traction, "You might not walk..." pfui.

They didn't know who they were dealing with.  As long as I'm the Funky Dr of LOVE big_smile and have homework (that will not be left undone) I'll pass.  Stiff upper lip and all that happy horsepoop.  I keep some pain meds hidden just in case.

EDITZ:  Bill my bad!  I jumped off topic again.  You'll be fine.  My brother had a tear in the cuff repaired and did fine.  He's 60 and still does springboard diving.  He's nuts.

Cervical fusion and 2 lumbar discectomies..I was broken and needed to be repaired..that simple..I really think I suffered more pre-op than after. Disability has no upside! Recovering comes with a different mind set.  And Jeff, watch the senior stuff!! I like to say things like that to Bill because I know it makes him blush. Do you know blush?  Sister Cate..I mean Lady Cate

Oh yeah you know I know that; disabled vs. recovering and everything that goes with it.    But blush?  I think I did that once or twice

Re: My summer just went down the crapper

Well, thought I'd give an update. I had my surgery yesterday and everything went well.
The tear was larger than the doc anticipated and it took 6 screws to re-attach the tendon. There was a small tear of the labrum also, so while he was "poking around" in there, he repaired that as well.
They did a nerve block, which basically left me with no feeling from my right shoulder down that entire arm. Very weird, as I could not even move my hand or fingers even a millimeter.  After talking with a number of people who have been through this, I was anticipating loads of pain (even through the pain meds) after the block wore off. I was able to sleep fairly well last night (pain about a 4 or 5 on a scale of 10) and about the same today.
I was a bit nervous about this whole thing, but, so far, it's gone as well as could be expected.
I hope to be back to normal within 4 months or so. In the meantime, trying to get adept at doing all the simple stuff left handed (like brushing teeth, etc.)

Glad to hear things are going ok . Get some rest and enjoy the weather . Hope to see you at the next JB show and I hope that is soon .
Take care

Re: My summer just went down the crapper

I guess this is reasonably good news then Bill. Glad to hear that the pain is bearable! I personally don't have the 'red Indian syndrome', I feel no need to show bravery be suffering pain stoically. If it hurts, grab a painkiller!

Hope all goes well, I wish you a speedy recovery.

Re: My summer just went down the crapper

YEAH!! Glad to hear good news Bill! Proof that "cut and paste" can be sucessful. I still think you suffered more before surgery than you will in recovery. Just stick to the plan. Sounds like you're ready for some shows!! Now, don't get a screw loose.  Cathy
