Topic: My summer just went down the crapper

My shoulder's been bugging me for a couple months and since it didn't seem to be getting any better, I finally went and saw the doctor this week. Long and short of it is I have a torn (detached) rotator cuff ...and a torn labrum for good measure.
So my near future involves fairly major shoulder surgery. Evidentally a series of plastic screws (I understand they dissolve eventually) to reattach tendon to bone, six weeks in a sling, and 6 months of rehab.
I just canceled my June fishing/camping trip into the Minnesota wilderness with my daughter and probably closed the book on playing golf for an entire season, which sorta sucks.
Oh well, I didn't really post this to whine to you all. There's a lot of worse things in life and I'm gonna look at this as a bit of a "speed bump". I'm just curious if anyone has any experience or knowledge of the procedure, or knows anyone that's gone through it. The doc told me that I'm gonna be miserable for at least two solid days after surgery. He said this is the most painful surgery there is, bar none...(expletive deleted) scared the crap outta me!

Re: My summer just went down the crapper

Hi Bill and I'm sorry. I think the fact that you describe a torn rotator cuff as a shoulder that's "been bothering me' shows a fairly strong constitution. I can't advise about what it's like because I've never experienced it. I will tell you that no matter what, a healing pain beats the cr*p out of a chronic debilitating one. Since it was bad enough for you to seek medical consult, why endure more without it being part of your rehab. Shame on your Doc..It's like an OB/GYN telling a pregnant lady that labor was going to be more painful than she can imagine! Anyway, that's why they make pain pills. So, I'll help you look for the "bright" side. It won't prevent you from attending concerts! Keep us posted and e-mail me if I can help!    Cathy

Re: My summer just went down the crapper

I've had a problem with the rotator in my left shoulder for about ten years now. Doctors have treated it with Ibuprofen and Vicodin when it flares up and told me the surgical solution was way more painful and involved a long rehab process which I've never had the luxury to do. Then back in Oct. I have a cancerous tumor removed from the left side of my neck, there was no hemmin' or hawwin' about this procedure. The resulting nerve damage left my left side ear, neck, chin, upper chest, and shoulder about 60-70% numb. Needless to say I don't have as much trouble with the rotator as I used to. I don't recomend this process just as I tell people I don't recomend a 40# weight loss by going through radiation treatments either. I guess there's a silver lining in all this after all.  I've watched two friends go through your procedure and it was no cake walk, but they are both fully recovered with full mobility. Good luck buddy!!!

Sorry to hear you have such problems with your shoulder. Hope the surgery works out well and that you recover well.

Re: My summer just went down the crapper

Bill,
My stepdad has had the procedure done twice--once on each shoulder.  He was a body builder and I believe that is how he injured them.  One surgery he had over fifteen years ago and the other was about six months ago.  All I know is that you don't talk to him for the first week of surgery because he was not a happy camper.  He is like a superman and thinks he doesn't need the time to heal like everyone else and went out cutting trees shortly after his latest surgery!  He ended up with a terrible staph infection and took much longer to heal, but has recovered fine.  Technology is so great.  This time he had a chair dropped off at the house that he used to do the physical therapy.

I wish you luck Bill!  I think one Summer off will be worth it.

Re: My summer just went down the crapper

OH Bill,
Where to start. My wife had her rotater cuff replaced. There was also a bone spur on her clavicle that kept tearing the tendon. I think it was May of 2006 she had the surgery. They removed her clavicle and I think replaced or patched her rotater cuff.  The docs are right the first 2 to 4 days are BRUTAL. They sent her home with 20 mg Oxycontin twice a day for the first week. With Percoset all day long. She also had a pump with a cathater dripping morphine directly in the shoulder.  The first day the pump failed, couldn't fix it because it had to be done under sterile conditions.  She also had this small cooler type thing filled with ice and water that pumped the cold around her shoulder and arm. Pretty slick actually. To try and make this short and sweet. After 3 monthes of phys therapy she slowly gained 90% of her movement and strength back.  To this day been almost 2 years she still has bad pain and is on 10 mg Vicodin (Norco)  At least she has the strength and movement back. The physical therapy is SO important. The stretching  they tell you to do at home is KEY.  So to sum it all up. PAINFULL YES, but over time it will heal and you'll be good as new.  GOOD LUCK.

Take care everyone. And if I don't meet you no more in this world
Then ill, I'll meet you in the next one and don't be late, don't be late

Hey Buddy Bill,
They say you can't keep a good man down, I know you are such a man!  All will go well and I'm sure other great activities & opportunities will pop-up and keep you smiling.  I keep watching for a Chicago area concert, long past due on a roadtrip to my sister's and of course, we would be so delighted to see you again....oh and that Joe guy, too.  lol

                                                                                Patty

P.S.  Rhonda & I have been joking that we will probably have to hitchhike to Joe shows since we're both putting kids in to college this upcoming fall, so if you happen to be tooling down the highway and see us with our thumbs up, please pick us up.  lol

Re: My summer just went down the crapper

Bill that sucks...I know your miserable, but I hope you got a second opinion....my oldest brother has been lifting for years and tore his rotator real good about 10 years ago...the docs wanted to cut him up, and he refused...he ended up going to a woman that specialized in acupunture and acupressure...she worked on him for 6 months, told to change his lifting completely, NOT QUIT!...I told him she was a nut, dont listen to her...well it worked...he said she would bring his muscle head to tears at every session....just something to consider...myself I'm tore up pretty good...5 bulging disks... and my right knee is popping like a mutha...looking back on my 50 years, I'm going to borrow a line from Mickey Mantle "If I had known I was going to live this long , I would have taken better care of myself hmm

Re: My summer just went down the crapper

Thanks for the input everyone. It's helpful to know people have gone through this and come out OK on the other side. I've seen so many people go through much worse than this, including some of the people on this forum. My daughter is having her 6th ankle surgery in March and has been dealing with her injury for 1 1/2 years. JDawg, I thought of you and her (and all you've been through) as I was writing my initial post.  I still count my blessings every day.

Cathy, I guess I'd rather have the doctor be upfront about the reality of the surgery than to sugar coat it. That's me though...he could scare some people away from necessary surgery with that approach. Not having the surgery never entered my mind.

Shred, thanks for your thoughts. I'm going Tuesday for the second opinion. I would never go through anything like this without getting another opinion...I hope they tell me "you're ugly too".

I also got some great ideas on how to treat my "new found" time and money. Let's see, I probably spend an average of $50 per week on golf, say at least 20 weeks, that's $1000. Guess I can take a few road trips to see Joe!

Re: My summer just went down the crapper

Really sorry to hear that Bill. All I can say is good luck! I have a feeling I'm going to need some work done on one or both of my shoulders some day so I'm anxious to hear how it all turns out for you.

Re: My summer just went down the crapper

Hey Bill,
Sorry to hear pain is in your path.  One of my neighbors had the surgery, she's addicted to tennis...plays constantly since she was real young.  The surgery was successful, she's playing tennis again, giving private lessons and coaching a high school girls varsity tennis team.  Definitely do the second opinion and even the third if the second one doesn't agree with the first one, because then sometimes it leaves you confused.  OBEY YOUR DOCTOR and most importantly push yourself in physical therapy, make sure you go to a PT that has experience with shoulders and your current situation! smile

I'm sorry to hear about your daughter, the mechanics of the whole foot & ankle system is way more complicated than meets the eye! I wish her good luck!

Re: My summer just went down the crapper

Wow, Bill, so sorry to hear this. It's amazing how many people I know that have had or are having surgery recently. I hope your recovery will be speedier than predicted. Now, this doesn't mean you aren't coming out to any Joe shows over the summer, right? If your daughter can show up on crutches, you can show up in a sling. wink

When do you think you're going to have the surgery?

I'm just saying.

When do you think you're going to have the surgery?

I have an engineering conference in Vegas in early April, so I'm hoping to hold out until that's over, so probably mid April...unless the doc insists I need to do it sooner.

Re: My summer just went down the crapper

Bill very srory to hear of your shoulder problem.Sound like you are going to brave it through. This last year I hurt my shoulder and was in alot of pain.thought i had torn something. But they said it was just a muscle sprain of some sort.did some therapy and ice packs and it eventually got better.Still dont trust doing anything stressfull to it yet.It sounds like drugs may be the way to go after surgury.Best of luck ,keep us posted. At least it wouldnt keep you away from a JB show.

Sorry to hear about the shoulder problem, Bill. You will be in my thoughts as the day approaches. The first few days after the surgery, play Joe 24/7. smile

Re: My summer just went down the crapper

Sorry to hear about your shoulder. Look at it this way, it could be worse. It could be surgery on your ears, not allowing you to take in any Joe shows this summer. Hopefully Patty and I will be able to catch up with you this summer at a show. Your non surgery arm should be able to hold the beer, eh? lol

Bill, I've been waiting to hear of a second or third opinion before I commented.  Please tell me something more.
