I like 'em both but the newer version seems to have a little more soul....maybe Joe's growing a little and it's showing in his interpretation's of old songs?

Almost makes me feel like my song has been drug thru the mire  sad ........old/new it doesn't really matter to me, Joe singing those words, You Upset Me Baby, will always forever be etched into my heart as the magical moment in time & space when I entered the "Joe-Zone."

I normally hate to be pedantic but the past tense of drag is not drug as PLJ put it, but dragged!

Could it be US English?

Re: Old VS. New

I think it's really cool with some songs (Mountain Time comes to mind). But honestly, if he came out doing Sloe Gin radically different, or The river radically different, I don't know what I would think of it. But, at the same time, I wouldn't want anybody telling me how to play anything, so it's all up to Joe. I'll dig it either way.

Re: Old VS. New

It's that way with everything.  Listen to the originals.  Here's some examples:

Elmore James:  The Sky is Crying or Done Somebody Wrong
Otis Rush:  Crosscut Saw or I Can't quit You, Babe
Willy Dixon:  You Need Love (Whole Lotta Love) or Back Door Man
Robert Johnson:  Crossroads or Love in Vain
Ray Charles:  I Believe or Unchain My Heart

Some of our younger members will be surprised at the true authors of these definitive works.  Here's to your education and mind opening.

Re: Old VS. New

Shoot, that comes through today. Gnarls Barkley's Gone Baby Gone contains this lyric:

"Well I can see by the way that you switch and walk
And I can tell by the way that you baby talk
And I know by the way that you treat your man
I wanna love you baby, it's a cryin' shame"

Hmmm....wonder where that came from?

Re: Old VS. New

Just witnessed the new version live for the first time tonight and I liked it, it has a funky edge to it. Better? I do not know. Different? You bet. Great? Absolutely.

I notice that Joe has slowed some songs down but as I have posted elsewhere, there is no lack of quality in this set. My ears a ringing with the tunes and I can still hear his voice.

Re: Old VS. New

I'm just going to say what I said about Mountain Time. They're totally different songs. I just love the new bit at the end of the new You Upset Me Baby. Patty you will just love it when you see it live...I have a feeling he's going to be doing this song in the states. smile smile

Re: Old VS. New

I'm somewhat ambiguous about the old vs. new You Upset Me Baby. However, I very much miss Joe's original arrangement of Walk In My Shadow. That song rocked, but now it just doesn't excite me. Different strokes for different folks I know...I just love up-tempo shuffles, so I guess that's to be expected.

There's no arguing the power and beauty of the new Mountain Time though! That song has moments that are truly inspired.

Could be 'drugged'.

One of the reasons the purists hate Zepplin. It is alright to borrow from just don't claim it as yours as they did on the first two albums.

They say that bass players make the best engineers/producers.  I think it is because they are used to listening to the whole band at once and HAVE to pay attention to what everyone is doing.

Tom Dowd, Willie Dixon, ect. were all originally bass players......
