Topic: I've got the blues today and need to vent!

So, I wake up this morning and it is 63 degrees in my house!  My furnace fan is running, but no heat! It is -9 outiside, but feels more like -20.  I try resetting everything and it is flashing codes at me to let me know something maybe blocking the vent (possibly the white s**t on my roof!) or that the water pipe may be frozen.  Hubby says he cannot see anything blocking it, so I called the furnace guy and he said to check the water line.  I brought up a space heater to get some heat on it and I'll have to recheck it later.  My fingers are literally purple and they hurt terribly.  I can't wait to go to work . . .

My pipes in the kitchen are frozen, so I can't do the dishes--unless I do them in the bathtub, but after seeing TV specials on germs,  that's just wrong.  This morning, my hubby hit his auto start on his car and it sounded like a bomb went off.

Oh and I'm also sick for the 17th time since Fall!  I actually counted all of my colds this year.  Only two times I've gotten so sick that I actually ran a fever and thought I was dying though--so it could be worse, right?

I just want to scream!  Thanks for letting me vent . . .

Hang in there Fretwork !  Personally I think it probably all coincides with the lunar eclipse.  There are a lot of strange vibes in the air.  Let's blame it on the line up of the planets.  I do hope you get your problems all fixed with relative ease.  Go ahead and scream, I'm listening.  Sending you some warm sunshine smile smile smile smile smile smile smile smile smile smile smile smile smile smile smile

Sorry Fret, The joys of home ownership! Protect those fingers, girl! Can't hurt those guitar playing fingers! Some days are just s*hit! No way around it. Simple heat and hot running water..not too much to ask for, I agree. ((((((Fret)))))) there's a forum hug! Carl taught me that...Cathy

Re: I've got the blues today and need to vent!

Thanks.  I DO feel a little better now.   I've also got to chuckle because I realize that if we have auto-start on our car--let alone a car, and a house and (pretty good) health, then I guess I can't really have the blues anyway, can I?

I'm with you Cathy.  Some days are just s**t!  No way around it.  That really sums it up for me.  Patty, thanks for the sunshine!

Fretwork,
Sending you a forum hug as well. smile Its not my imagination with home ownership...things don't happen in onesies...its always exponential...the washing machine and the garage door opener break 2 days apart, then the repair man gouges you, the $75 was just to come through the door, doesn't include parts...definitely worse than the doctor's office, but they have the bad rap!!  All hell breaks loose always at the same time...

Do you take vitamins?  Up your vitamin C...you won't OD, I promise... wink

Thanks Angela!  Now that you mention it, that is the way it always seems to go.  When it rains it pours . . .

I actually take a multi-vitamin, calcium, cod liver oil and vitamin C which I up this time of year.  My mom is a nurse so she gets on me about those things.  It' funny, I usually don't have that much stress--I've got a job I love, I get plenty of sleep, I eat healthy and exercise (cardio and weights 4Xs a week), drink lots of water and wash my hands alot, especially during cold season.  I've always had a weak immune system though.  Growing up I had pnemonia at least once a year and bronchitis and colds constantly.  My brother and sister never got sick like me and still don't.  Oh well, I'm still nowhere near as sick as I was as a kid.

Re: I've got the blues today and need to vent!

did you ever get it to run?  try blowing out the condensate line...otherwise it may be a blockage in the exhaust stack and could even be some debris or a bird or something stuck in the induced draft fan housing.  Your pressure switches may not have a differential across them if there is a blockage and it is locking out your furnace.  Don't let the heating guy take advantage of you.

Re: I've got the blues today and need to vent!

Hint from experience..I have a heat pump, before I replaced it the old fan would freeze up..Had to put it on AC to exhaust heat to make it work...Might want to give it a try..It was a "relay" problem...Cathy (Daughter of a contractor who's Mother did all home repairs!)          Mant.....That kind of talk is a turn on at my age! Funny..it used to be looks, personality..now it's handyman abilities!..And Stu thought he was getting old

I'm only 26...but the ladies like that I can get stuff done around the house.  I work for Johnson Controls as a HVAC mechanic.  Every other waking second I play guitar and read this forum...what a life eh?

Re: I've got the blues today and need to vent!

You go boy!!  Playing guitar will get you in the door...But, the other skills will make their Mom's like you and that's a bonus!  You've got lots of life yet to come. Play and learn the charts! I know it's "work" but it will open up a world of music for you! (That's according to my 51 yo player friend who only learned all the scales/charts in the last 5 years)..As for the forum..very healthy place ...right?     Cathy

Fret,

All this s**t coming out of a very nice guitar playing woman like you? I can't believe it! I'll bet it's Craig posting and signed in under your name, right? big_smile I must agree, this winter is the SH*TS! I got so tired of doing triple toe loops with 1/2 half twist and 3/4 flop onto my driveway, that I've started a new dance called the "BluesMan Shuffle". To simulate it, get onto a pitched skating rink and just shuffle your feel to the end. The tough part about my driveway is not the going down to the mail box, it's the coming back up the pitch. James Brown never had anything on me!

"Whoa-oa-oa! I feel good, I knew that I would, now......."

Roy "Shuffle" BluesMan

Aww Roy!  You always crack me up.  I did a similar dance on my way out of work in the parking lot yesterday.  I was walking on glare ice and did a pretty sweet helicopter move with my arms to keep from falling.  Don't you feel silly looking around to see if anyone else saw?

It is indeed me posting--not Craig.  Rarely do I let such colorful language fly off my tounge, but that's how you know I mean what I say.  Hey, I think I'll use that in a song . . .

An update on my situation:

My husband's car is okay.  Not really sure what happened, but it's his work vehicle anyway.  I just got back from taking my hubby and son to the doctor's office.  Fevers of 102 and 103.1--hard to feel bad for my sick self when they are running fevers and feeling worse than me.  Just some nasty virus with symptoms a lot like influenza.  I stopped and picked up some Airbourne for myself at the suggestion of one of my friends.  I don't know if it will help me from getting real sick, but I'll try.  BJ, I'll have to look into the link you posted too.

When we got back from the doctor the pipes were unfroze in the kitchen--WHOO-HOOO!  I had shut everything down on the furnace including the breaker.  When I flipped the switches, there was heat.

Life is good again.

Reading about Nathan makes me count my blessings.  He will be in my prayers.

I found out driving into work that my hubby and son's influenza B tests came back positive.  I left work at 6:30 last night with the chills sore tired muscles and a fever of 102 myself.  My son even had a flu shot because of his asthma, but that didn't stop it.  Hopefully we'll all be better soon.

Hey, there is heat in the house and the pipes aren't frozen anymore!

Re: I've got the blues today and need to vent!

Sadly, the formula used for this years flu vaccine was miscalculated..It's a cocktail of the viruses that the CDC THINKS will cause outbreaks..They got it wrong this year! It's a nasty strain and is nationwide..Stay hydrated, use meds for comfort...There are antivirals that are used early in the course of the disease, it's your Doctor's discretion...doesn't stop you from getting sick, just lessens the severity.  Sorry to all that are ailing!! Sending JoeLove your way!!!!!     Cathy

Re: I've got the blues today and need to vent!

Roy-I will keep Nathan in my thoughts and prayers, he's a trooper and I wish him the best in his battle. smile

Fret-I noticed over at your Valentine story lol you mentioned your son had allergies, eczema, asthma...and you've mentioned your immune system since you were young.  This is an area of medicine I find a big void...the whole immunology arena...some of the research is inconsistent.  It concerns me why asthma and autism are on the rise along with peanut allergies.  I'm hoping your son does not have a peanut allergy, because if he does you already know about the combo w/asthma.  One of my son's has a peanut allergy (without asthma) since he was a baby and had infantile eczema that came back after 17 years when he went on accutane for acne.

There is a 10 year old boy on my street who is autistic, so that's how I started tuning into that, research keeps going back and forth on the vaccine issue...many parents said symptoms and changes in their child kicked in right after the vaccination.  Also, some research has said that in other countries where they don't vaccinate like the US, food allergies are not as prevelant, so I wonder about all that. Back when my mom's generation were raising babies in the 50's, pediatricians followed a much stricter guideline for introducing foods.  My youngest is 15 so I don't know if that's swung back to the old ways or not, but my feeling personally with some research and first hand knowledge, I would not introduce peanuts/peanut butter before a child is 3 years old...the immune system is not developed enough and its possible to by-pass getting the allergy.  I have read that in my research, but its not written up in any well known medical journals or anything.  My son does not fit the typical profile of having a food allergy...parents allergic etc.  I think he's allergic because his immune system may have had a predisposition and when I ate peanuts during pregnancy or nursing, he was exposed to it, therefore when he ate peanut butter for the first time at 18 months, he reacted, the second time worse, the third time much worse...every organ in his body was affected, he was ten, he could have died. He had one bite of an unlabeled bagel that was made with a couple of swirls of peanut butter.  In laymen's terms-for some people, the body has a memory and everytime the allergic person is exposed the reaction is more severe, so that's my son's pattern unfortunately.  Peanut allergies are the most deadly food allergy one can have, seafood is likely second.  True story-someone I know lost a very good friend with a peanut allergy on a US Air flight...they served peanuts back then (about 10 years ago) and the same air recirculates in the cabin, he died on the flight.  Every US Air flight I've been on since then, peanuts were not served any more, more recently I've been flying Southwest and people carry peanut butter sandwiches on the plane...I don't travel on planes that much, maybe once a year.

I belong to the Food and Allergy Network and receive updates on research etc.  I was wondering if you ever found any consistencies in what triggers your son's eczema at different times? Does he have food allergies?  Send me an e-mail if you want to swap any info. smile  I hope everyone feels better soon!!  Everyone has a snow day today, its our first decent snow, its beautiful, but I understand how it can get old...
