Re: January 31st - The Coach House

JDawg-I was thinking what you were thinking, I was hoping Joe and Robben maybe would share the stage...I've never had the privilege of seeing Robben perform and don't know anything about his personality, none the less, Robben's career is only going in a positive direction having a Grammy nod and I enjoy the unique virtuosity that both of these great guitarists bring to the table! smile

Did Joe play at all with Robben?  Joe said he's known Robben for many years, so I was hopin' they'd join forces on stage.

Join forces????

Robben is no longer a "force". Sure he can still play but his personality and activity (or lack thereof) make it impossible to call him a force.

Seems to me it would be like oil and water to have them on the stage together. Doesn't surprise me that it didn't happen.

Re: January 31st - The Coach House

My first time hearing Joe live, I was able to attend both outstanding shows,  1/31 at the Coach House and 2/1 at the Galaxy Theater.   I've been a musician for 42 years and I've been searching for a sound like Joe's for a long time; if there's someone else on the planet that combines performance skill on the guitar with writing, singing and stage presence equal to Joe's, I want to know about him.  I have the sense that Joe is an artist that cannot help becoming one of the biggest names in music this century.

A real highlight for me was Bogie's drumming, really enhanced by the excellent placement and selection of mics.

I would like to hear more keyboard throughout.  At the Coach House I sat right in front of Joe, about 10 feet from the stage beside the delightful DD. I couldn't hear keyboard most of the show and figured it was because I was too close to the stage to hear the mains.  At the Galaxy, I walked around the whole floor area, standing directly in front of the mains, and could only hear Rick well when I stood next to him and listened to his monitor.  Rick is a very tasteful and talented player, and I think nudging him up a bit in the mix (and maybe nudging the bass down) would produce an even tighter, more powerful sound.

One omission from other posters' set lists is that Joe played a cover of the first 1:45 of Genesis' Squonk (one other poster for a previous gig identified this as Los Endos) toward the end of the set.  Sounded GREAT and is so consistent with the band's big sound.

How long can it be before Joe is playing stadiums?

Final thought for those of you who are as whacky as I am: how cool would it be if Joe and keyboardist Jon Cleary jammed on the same stage?  Oh my...

Joe, safe travels on your incredible tour.  Save some energy for Monterey!

Re: January 31st - The Coach House

We're back in Wisconsin - snowing again today.  We had a great trip to California -
was so glad to meet Shred, Rocket, Susan and many others.  I thought everyone
was great - Crosby, Joe, Shawn Jones, and Robben Ford.  Our two days were
packed full of adventures.  Roy will give the details later I'm sure !

Re: January 31st - The Coach House

I've got to say it's wonderful to be reading show reviews again. My fingers will be crossed that ANDY stays in the set list. I asked for a "bone" for us guitar solo junkies and ANDY fits the bill. Also glad to hear of forum friends having a face to face. Look out Europe!   Cathy

Re: January 31st - The Coach House

The Genesis bit has been in Joe's setlist since last summer.  Regarding keyboard sound, Rick Melick has a way of not demanding you listen to him (I think Joe MAKES him solo) such that the only way you truly and I add strongly FULLY appreciate his contributions is a) answer the demand of your ears to pull only his sound up and to the forefront of the sphere of your listening, or b) remove him from the sound completely.  I veto b.  I think nudging Rick up would be alright too, but I hear him just fine....Then I'd also want him & the band to cut loose on "Going Down" also...But...

Welcome cdnrocker.  Although you are correct that this Genesis snippet that Joe & Co. are sharing with us is sonically identical to the begnning of "Squonk",  apparently the part that Joe has "quoted" is the reprise of this which appears at the end of the album (yes, I'm showing my age) "Trick of the Tail".  I initially thought the same thing but Joe has written it on the set list as Los Endos so I'm pretty sure he knows what's he's talking about.

If you're new to Joe's live shows, you've missed the similar (but longer) addition of two classic Yes snippets (excerpts from "You and I" and "Starship Trooper") to his live performance of "Had To Cry Today".  If you ask nicely, some generous soul may be willing to share a Joe-authorized audience recording featuring this gem.  You might head over to bonamassalive.com, sign up and make a request, if that's how they do things over there.  Be patient and Christmas can come early.
